Beijing 2008

As you may know, the olympics in Beijing begin very, very soon.

However, alot of controversy is surrounding them due to China's human rights, and some people are boycotting it because of this. Others are saying its the biggest political misuse of the olympics since 1932 berlin, and its all for propaganda and stunt purposes. Also i saw an episode of Panorama earlier, which revealed China funding the sudanese government and thier involvement in Darfur, but thats another story.

So i was wondering, where everybody else stands in the boycotting/non-boycotting thing of the olympics. I myself will watch a little, because i love the olympics, but i feel i should be boycotting because i like human rights. and i'm sure other people like human rights. But anyway, i'll meet halfway, watch only the Paralympics, which get an unfortunately small amount of news coverage. (Because the paralypics are AMAZING, truly awe-inspiring what people can acheive.)

I dunno, I don't really think you should boycott the world's biggest and most ancient sporting event just because you don't like the country its in... On the other hand it will probably be a pretty effective way of protesting, if people stop going to/buying things from China, they must realise they have to change. Obviously I believe in human rights... but I'm still gonna watch it :)

Actually you know, i think it was on the old "Funny pictures thread" where there way a guy protesting with "BOYCOTT CHINA '08" and there were arrows pointing to everything saying "made in china". So if you dont like thier human rights, its difficult to protest considering china are probably the world largest exporters of goods.

The Olympics is about sporting events. It's a time to relax from global catastrophies, and have fun competitions. It's an event where all countries should bring out the best of the best and compete, it shouldn't have to deal with anything other than that. That's just my opinion.

Agreed.

The Olympics should be all about the athletes and competition, not who did what and let's try to make a difference. I have a feeling the entire reason the hosting country changes every year is to dispell a feeling of being able to connect the Olympics to a certain country, although history already does that. The take over of Tibet was over 40 years ago (Amiright?), now is not the time to bring it up, and try to ruin the greatest sporting event in the World.

I am personally against the take over of Tibet, but that doesn't mean I'm going to Boycott the Olympics.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

Sporting events are not a political arena for stunts and cheap shots.

If people want to protest the issue of Tibet, good for them, but find a more suitable platform where people will actually give a damn about your cause.

Although I do not agree with China's politics, the Olympics were made to be a time to drop issues and play some games.

It's like the World Cup, to be honest...During the World Cup, countries divided by civil wars unite to play together, politics are forgotten and all that matters is the game(s).

I'll be watching...I know people that are going to the actual thing, I'll be watching it live on TV probably, while most of you guys are halfway across the world and will have to stay up all night to see some parts. (Unless they specially find good times for the entire world) Yay for my trip to Taiwan. (And...There it is. A reason I should be boycotting, I suppose. I mean, Taiwan doesn't exactly like China, but meh...The Olympics are fun? Politics shouldn't be considered when thinking about it.)

its great that activists are standing up to these crimes against humanity but kind of the wrong time to do it in. I mean we only see the Olympics every 4 years and people are gonna want to watch it and see their country compete against the rest of the world.

and also, how are you going to boycott China? They make everything!

on that note, how bout US basketball team, they look pretty good, Wade, Bryant, Kidd, and some other veterans

Worst [bleep] country. Can't believe it got the bid over Toronto or Paris.

and for people saying the Olympics isnt for anything else other than sports.. wasn't it founded to honor the Olympian gods?

Yes but obviously we don't worship the Olympian gods anymore (or atleast a majority of us). We just carry on the tradition of competing.

I believe China should give improve their human rights, and since so many people will be watching maybe they will be forced into it by the rest of the world. I honestly will only watch a bit of the Olympics if I'm lucky. I hardly ever watch T.V. anymore, I just don't have the time.

So you worship Zeus then? Paying money in a bid to host the games is hardly abiding by the original Olympian spirit either.

I prefer to think about this by reversing the roles and seeing what would happen if we were in China's shoes, and I come to this question - should people boycott London 2012 for our controversial actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, or for the way we support Israel's actions in Gaza?

You can't boycott every country you have an issue with. There'd be none left to host the games.

Course I'm gonna watch, human rights has next to nothing to do with the olympics aside from the country its in...

(actually I won't watch, as the events are boring, but that would make the post more meaningless.)

I don't really know much about that, but I do know why they picked the date it starts on.8/8/08,the word for eight sounds like the word for fortune,so that makes it an auspicious date.

But other than that, screw the Olympics lets talk about the YOG.

Uhh, if you've been following the news, the only thing that will happen to Beijing is nothing more than a mask. Those communist [bleep]s will just pretend until the spotlight goes away after the Olympics.

Exactly. I was saying the modern games have never been in honour of the Olympian Gods. So saying they should be is a bad argument.

It is a sporting event which unfortunately has been poisoned by politics since 1936.

Do you treat everyone as though they're so [developmentally delayed]ed they become incapable of reading something for themselves?

If the human rights abuse is as big as you claim, it would immensely difficult to hide it in a country the size of China, or a region the size of Tibet. Far from it, the Olympics actually puts China under more scrutiny, not less. If someone protests near an event, and the authorities brutally stop it, it'll be for the whole world to see.

No, but not everyone reads the same news. I'll let you in on another secret, some people don't even bother with the news. Crazy stuff huh?

I personally don't know enough about this situation to give a you a full opinion about it, but I do feel that the Olympics is losing its meaning by the corruption of some political agendas. Its a time to forget about each others differences and come together as one.
