omg scamming!

Okay, so we can now lend out items. And people are charging rent for it, and sometimes they keep the money and don't go through with the loan, or they do a "just until we log out loan" and take the item straight back. There are plenty of rants about item lending, and quite a few of them focus on the potential for scamming.

Thing is, RuneScape's had scamming for years and years. Until the RWT updates, people were regularly tricked out of vast sums of money by item switchers and lurers. The scammers could be reported, but we all still played the game at our own risk, knowing that we might lose our stuff if we weren't careful. As experienced players, we all knew that it wasn't safe to do a trust game, or a drop trade, or an items-for-info/assistance deal, and we knew that if we didn't read the trade screen carefully we might lose our stuff. And it'd be our own fault if we fell for these tricks.

The RWT updates drastically reduced the potential for scamming. Indeed, they reduced the potential for lots of things! That said, it's still very easy to have a deal go bad, especially if you're asking for payment in return for your help via the Assist system, or trying to sell information. Plus there have been the various lure tricks in BH, although I wouldn't necessarily class them as scams.

Now that we've got this lending system, and within the first few hours people were complaining about it leading to scams. Yet these scams are no bigger than anything else that's currently possible in the game. All the "renting" of items is done at the players' own risk, just like cash-for-assistance deals.

People often complain that the game's getting dumbed down or noobified. Well, this might just be the exception to that trend! If players want to borrow items from a lender who's demanding payment, they're going to have to take the risk themselves, since Jagex hasn't provided any "safe" mechanism for it. I wonder if they will? Or maybe they'll take the easy way out and forbid us to do anything that's got the slightest potential for scamming. I'd find that patronising.

So... what's the big deal with the return of scamming? Scamming never went away, and it never will. (Not unless Jagex blocks all item transfers, and we don't want that.) Item renting doesn't help the situation, but I think there's been some serious over-reaction to it.

On a practical note, if you're really desperate to borrow that item in exchange for your hard-earned gp, make REALLY sure the offer screen says "it will be returned to its owner's Returned Items box in 24 hours" rather than "... it will be returned to its owner's Returned Items box immediately if either of you logs out". Otherwise you're just asking for trouble! :-)

There is already another thread that is discussing this...

and josh this can happen in f2p.. Its called junk trading. I hvae about 8k hardleather bodies that are worth according to the GE about 76gp each (idk is thats is correct atm). Say you want to rent my red H mask. I say ill let you have it for 5 hours if you buy 1k of my hardleather bodies for 76k. You buy, and then i lend you my item.

Bascially your setting yourself up to get scammed.. unless you do it with a friend that you know wont scam you.

so it's true that scamming wont go away completely :P

IMO, dumbing down of the the hasn't really stopped with this update, as about all of the methods to scam involved the scammed to not really pay atention( IE not looking at the trade window or walking in the wilderniss etc.), although in this case, he cant know for sure if the lender is really giving his item.

This scamming only applies to members right..? Because F2P can only trade 3k at a time?

f2p can also junk trade, but i dont think it will happen a lot in f2p because they dont have really usefull items to lend out. maybe the occasional player who want to lend a phat or so, but not much more.

Well the morons should realise that it is called item LENDING. Not item RENTING. It's their own fault if the get scammed. Hasn't Jagex said like a billion times

"Dont lend your items out to people! You might not get them back!"

The same friggin concept applies here. If you aren't willing to loose your money, dont give it away.

The little kiddies should stop whining to mommy and daddy Jagex that they gave 30k to someone, and didn't get what they wanted back.

This is just one of many reasons that made me leave runescape in the first place.

Id just say that the person borrowing pay after the lending. The person lending really won't lose anythign if the other person doesn't pay besides a few lost hours using an item. Anyways the person lending is probably rich enough anyways and I find the lending system more for friends or kind people who just want to help out others. So getting paid is just a bonus.

People are just going to have to think again for the first time in 6 months. At least you can only be out of a max of 30k and not more. The lending system was meant to soften the blow of the removal of free trade to friends who shared equipment not give a chance for the poor to look rich. You would really have to be stupid to fall of this kind of scamming. It's not even clever, it's just sad. At least a good portion of scammers before were halfway intelligent and had some sneaky tricks up their sleeves.

I agree, people should stop complaining that they get scammed. Really, even back in the days when people were scammed out of millions, all of the tricks were fairly easy to spot. If you got scammed once, well it happens and maybe you'll pay more attention the next time. If it happens again, all you can blame is yourself for being stupid.

sorry for being a noob here but can you set it so you get your item back in 24 hours, ignoring log out? So i can lend to a friend for 24 hours, and he keeps it if i log out in say 2 hours, for the other 22 hours?

yes.

News: although Jagex SAYS lending for money is illegal, there are currently loads of threads in Weapons and Armor lending out items for cash, and borrowing for cash, and even in the sticky for lending an item in which the first post says it is illegal to lend for cash (or something to that effect).

First of all, you can always report these people under item scamming, second mods have confirmed that lending for profit isnt allowed and u can report them. Its pathetic how people take advantage of these updates to make a lil bit of gp

The spirit of lending was to let your friends try out some of your items, not "rent" them.

But meh, the only way to stop the scamming is to create a legitimized way to receive payment from lending items. A second window in which you select the payment/hour, and the lender automatically gets his money and the lendee gets his item. Of course, then the option for the lender to get his item back if either people log out would be disabled if a payment is being made. See, that wasn't so hard.

I hate it how gullible noobs get scammed 30k and not get the item that they wanted to borrow. I mean, its their own faults in the first place for being so *Censored* excited about possibly getting a strong weapon and throwing common sense away in the process.

Bottomline: Theres no such thing as a free lunch (In this case, weapon) in Runescape.

Its not all a scam.

Some people are legitimate. I was asked to lend my whip for an hour, the man was generous and paid 25k. 10 before, 15 after. I didnt charge him, he simply PMd asking if I could borrow and offered up 25k.

I borrowed another Tifers SS the other day for 3 hours, I offered to pay, but, he declined.

I dont look at is as renting. I look at it as, the person is kind enough to let you have his item for a set amount of time, and paying him is just incentive for him to accept. I DO NOT agree with those who charge hourly rates on items.

I think the situation is bigger than you think. Im not sure what a lvl 132 with a bgs would do with 30k =/

Mmm, could be.

People are currently doing junk trades to pay the rent for the items.

Either:

1. Jagex creates a system sufficiently flexible to let people do a junk trade in payment for an item rental. They'd implicitly be declaring that junk trades are a legitimate activity that they support.

2. Jagex creates a system that lets us pay for rentals in cash only, up to the trade limit. People wishing to supplement this with a junk trade have to do so at their own risk. The scamming continues, but only for people who do it via junk trades, and that kind of player is probably experienced enough to understand the risks properly.

3. Jagex does nothing, leaving us to sort ourselves out. I could live quite happily with this, since I'm only interested in lending my stuff to friends, and I wouldn't charge for that. Hopefully people will work out the risks and stop moaning about scamming soon enough.
