But it probably wasn't televised 'cos if you watched the G4 coverage like me you noticed there are hundreds of these booths with games you never heard about. P.S. There are so many more freakin' Noobs in f2p. nerdattack16
From the first link to get their offering into the right hands. They view the business model as a form of defense as well, allowing them some degree of shielding. If anyone else wants to enter the browser-based MMO space, they'll need to match the Runescape price of 'free' in order to compete. They also are considering, behind the scenes, the possibility of adding some microtransactions to the game at some point in the future. Never thought about it that way, and what do they mean by the microtransactions? Microtransactions are basically like buyable items, skins, etc. Sig credit goes to ThruItAll. :D

Skiittles11
I didn't even realize Jagex (Runescape) was supposed to be at E3. I believe that Runescape is a lot easier to enjoy for a long period of time than Sony's, and Microsoft's, console games. Found the following articles http://www.massively.com/2008/07/16/e30 ... -industry/ http://www.massively.com/2008/07/15/jag ... mechscape/ http://www.massively.com/2008/07/16/e30 ... of-funorb/ http://www.massively.com/2008/07/16/the ... -of-jagex/ Shame none of the "big" sites covered them (Gamespot, IGN etc.) I found these articles fairly interesting, darkdude98. Thanks for the read. It's unbelievable that Jagex is already developing another game (Mechscape). It seems like a good idea to create a much more aged, and mature, version of our beloved Runescape. Although, science fiction games have never been an interest of mine, I believe I will definitely try Mechscape if it is realeased, as planned, in early 2009. I find it cleansing to speak out my opinions, Skiittles11
Derrick44444
Would you please explain to me what part of runescape isn't a grindfest? The ENTIRE game is "point and click" even at higher levels and on members servers. Well that would make just about everything thing even FPS games grindfests. On runescape even at low lvls like 50's -60's you can do stuff. But on some other games you have to grind for xp training combat before there is much to do. Mmorpgs are bound to have grinding, they have to, otherwise absolutely everything becomes pointless. Single-playing games typically have none, everything is rich, fun, appealing, but you only get about 10-20 hours of gameplay. There are exceptions, like the sims, which has some amount of grinding, thus you get more hours of gameplay but you sacrifice the sheer fun you get with other games. If mmorpgs only took 20 hours to complete, there would be no point in playing, thus the need for grind. To enjoy RS you need to like goal-achieving, as most of the enjoying things are unlocked after a crapload of grinding. 2480+ total

No some of the FPS company are getting smart and have incorporated a "ranking" system. Like in CoD4 you have to get xp from kills and such to unlock levels, weapons. Each weapon has a set task before you "complete" the weapon. If you complete a class of weapons you unlock a "golden gun". So in a way you do grind for xp even in some FPS games. hellbellz
You gain the guns as you play the game, you can do a variety of things to do for your XP in CoD4, not the same thing over and over again. And I'm going to agree with Pez, Runescape looks horrible to many other games out there.
tuggernongy
Jagex were probably afraid they would get beaten up by RS players angry over the RWT updates. I can just imagine someone 300-kicking Andrew in the chest over that. "Mr Gower any plans for adding free trade or the wilderness back into the game?" "No, sorry. With all the time we spent creating the alternatives like the grand exchange it would be madness." "Madness?" "Madness? THIS!.....IS!.....WILDY!!!" *kicks into dumpster* FOR.... That would ruin what ive been doing since RSC. Im not that high level right now, but by the time the game finally dies ill have all 99's lol I just came back from a long break. Back on bob. Like? Gears of War 2 is possibly the only exciting or innovative exclusive coming to the xbox in the next year. PS3 has had and will be having a much greater lineup because of the quality of its relationship with its publishers (MGS4 has sold around a million copies already, and more games of that type are to come, including Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet). Also your GTA and Final Fantasy examples = phail. GTA4 was licensed to both companies practically from the start, this was a decision by TT Interactive not Microsoft or Sony. Regarding Final Fantasy, if you read the full press releases, the developers of that game are going to make it exclusively for PS3 first and optimize it for that system, then simply port it to 360 afterwards. Get your facts straight. Back on topic, I'm not surprised that RS didn't have a huge showing at E3, and I don't think it will until it busts out of this "java browser" shell. People can look at a game like WoW or Age of Conan, see it run in DX10 with shader 3.0, and be impressed. A game like RS that runs in a browser, on java, and with little to no requirements just doesn't make a splash in the mainstream. That is not to say of course that it's a bad game, I've played RS for years and I enjoy it very much. But there's just not really much to be said of its E3 showing, or any of its future E3 showings until it stops running on java and gets off of a browser and on to your desktop. elucin8er
Why would they cover a browser game at E3? LOL. They already have wow, Runescape isn't exactly a challenging game now that the wildy is gone. It's all down to time consuming these days. I'm hanging out for Starcraft 2, it's going to be incredibly massive. I'm anticipating quite easily a record breaking sale for computer games. 2/3 Of the Korean population will buy it, and now that the competitive gaming industry is getting tons of English commentry support the worldwide community is staggering. Lots of people are gonna get into it straight away :D Myself included. :D Proper Daily blogging including Starcraft 2! Randox
Microtransactions could also mean that f2p will not be free for ever. Since it was practicly put in the same sentance as how RS has a free option, I see no link between 'micro transactions' and legal RWT. Jagex already stated that they were not going to do that (I think they did), but they have never promised that f2p will always be free to play. Micro in this sense means '(very) small' (as opposed to the metric meaning as a prfix meaning 10^-6). This could even be taken to mean that there will be a new class of players, the semi-mems, who will pay for parts of members by paying part of the membership fee. The last one is unlikely but still possible. Actualy I might have got it right. Here is the meaning of microtransaction as applied to the internet (the origin of the 'word'). http://www.worldwidewords.org/turnsofphrase/tp-mic2.htm It means charging very small amounts (like a few cents) for each webpage viewed.
