Biking help.

So me and me German Exchange student just did a 5 Mile biking trip. I was basically wheezing, Which means I am out of shape. Track try-outs are in 3 months. This gives me time to train my leg muscles by biking. I usually do the 4x400m and the 1600 meter run. The German kid just started a 40 mile round trip to mall just to buy shoes. Makes me sick

How many miles should I do a day minimum to get prepared?

 

 

 

How many miles should I be able to do on bike to be able to sprint a mile at same speed?

im a swimmer, so i dont know much about running but i could try to give you some advice.

 

 

 

id practice your 100m daily and time yourself. supplement your running with some weightlifting focusing mainly on your legs.

5 miles? Were those 5 miles hilly? Because that's not a lot on a bike. Not trying to insult, just curious (as in, how much out of shape?).

 

 

 

My suggestion is to just ride everyday you can and try to go somewhere new whenever you can. That way you won't get bored as quickly and get to explore (yay!).

Wear weights on your ankles when you run if it is safe for your ankles :-#

 

You're not going to be running track with ankle weights, so I advise you not to do that. It messes up the arches and causes unnecessary stress on your feet.

A good way to train is a BIT more each day. Example:

 

 

 

Day one: you bike, say, 3 miles. Everyday, go one tenth of a mile long

 

 

 

Day one: 3

 

Day 2: 3.1

 

Day 3: 3.2

 

Day 4: 3.3

 

 

 

You get the point. 3 months=90 days. Your biking an extra 9 miles now, or (does 3+9 in head) 10... no,11...no, wait, 12 Miles. Do an extra 1/10 2x a day, and your doing 21 miles. Also, push yourself EVEN more, go a BIT faster every day.

Biking helps your legs AND is a cardio workout, it basically builds stamina just as well as running.

 

 

 

And if you're wheezing after FIVE MILES, I wouldn't blame you.

 

 

 

I'm definitely in shape but I know for a fact I can't bike for five miles.

If you want to train for the 400m then do reps of 200m and 300m, and then do shorter stuff to work on your speed. It's a hard event - If you don't feel like you are dying when you train for the 400m then you aren't training hard enough.

Doing a certain amount of miles would do very little if you're not doing it right. You could 10-15 miles very relaxed and that would do very little for your fitness. Go to a trail near your home or a park or something and just ride as hard and as fast as you can till you can't anymore due to lactic acid / too tired. That gives you a great cardio workout, improves your endurance and will build up muscle quickly as you're tearing a lot of the muscle fiber. Ride as close to your limit a you can, don't be afraid of falling, it doesn't hurt to much.

 

 

 

Research proper cycling techniques first, saddle position is hugely important, if it's to low you're wasting so much energy trying to go faster and the workout wont be as good. Try and eat a lot of protein as well to best improve your muscles regenerate.

if im not mistaken riding a bike and running uses different leg muscles, those are not totally similar. I would say that you do some actual running, if you can. Other than that biking is good, but its also not that great of a stamina builder, once again i think running would do you a lot better (consider that you are running the 400).

Yes they do use different muscles but some other muscles are both used. In a triathlon you will always see the riders changing their saddle height and cycling style when they begin to get close to the running stage, this is to warm up the lower leg muscles (the running ones) as his uppers are already warm.

 

 

 

As the thread creator said he / she just wants to build up fitness for the track.

Well if you train for running, then actually running would be far more effective than cycling. Yet if you hate running, then just try riding some set distance, and don't make it longer, just make your med speed higher every time. Used to do the same thing, when i used to go to cyclin sport club, yet the workouts were too boring, so i quit. Btw at what speed did you ride those 5 miles? If it was hot outside and you did 30+ km/ph, youre fine, yet if it was 20-25, then you have to do a lot of work...

 

And if you decently work out for those 3 month's, youll be in a good shape, just focus mainly on running. Yet bike is the best city transport :thumbsup:

Two important points that could really save you a lot of grief:

 

 

 

1) Make sure the tire tension is right. Underinflated tires put a lot of stress on your knee joints and could result in long term problems.

 

2) Use a bike without shocks. Shock absorbers are great for mountain biking, but when you take a bike with shocks out on the road the shocks will absorb a lot of energy that could be put into pushing you forward in stead.
