Mystery of THE squares...

Featured Replies

I just want to say that I'm sorry if I didn't see a thread about this anywhere and am posting about a topic that is already acknowledged and is already talked about but I did not see anything about it on the forums so here it is.

Some of you may have noticed some mysterious, strange squares in RuneScape. Where, do you ask? Well I'm talking about those none other than on the world map. Go ahead and take a look at them. Open up the in-game world map and look around the edges. There are many areas in which there is a checkered black-and-gray pattern. These are suspicious looking to me and I doubt they are just blank parts of the map. I am convinced these sections are new parts of the map that will be released in the future. Here are two examples that help prove my viewpoint:

One of these checkered patterns is located north of Morytania. If you have done enough of the Varrock Museum and remember correctly, the npc (I forgot the name but the one at the entrance) that gives you and talks about kudos says that once you've gotten enough of them, you receive permission to go on an expedition or something to a new island once the workers have finished building the barge north of the dig site. She says they discovered a new island north of Morytania, right where that huge square is. Is it a coincidence? I think not.

My second example is weaker than the first but I think it might also show that these areas might be future land masses or extensions of current land. Another one of these big square patterns is located on the west of the map, right around Tirannwn. In fact, part of it is inside of Prifddinas, and makes up the Northwest quadrant of the castle or whatever it is. A lot of people think that Prifddinas might be explorable in the future and if I'm right, this could expand that part of the map and lead to unlocking it. I'm just pointing out the possibilities. =)

So when might this all be released? Well why not during the "mega quest?" It sure would make sense. A lot of people think this quest will be about a war between all parts of the world, including forces from the north and the elven folk from the west. Maybe part of the quest will give you the mission of infiltrating Prifddinas? Could be...

So anyway, there you have it. The mystery of the squares. Please post comments on this thread, I really wanna know what people think. I could be completely wrong but if I'm right it would be awesome. =)

They are areas that haven't been coded for us to use yet. When a new quest or something comes out, a new area will. (Most likely).

Nice to see you finally posting on tif andrey :)

I still hold my theory of a giant chess game between zammy and sara

Well I think it's actually a sort of curtain that's being held over areas for beta testing and such. If you look at the one next to trollheim it takes up the entire mountain, but north of it is the sea....

These are just areas that have not been coded, or they are not showing us :ohnoes:

It's great you know what you're talking about rustiod. Everything you've said is 100% accurate a true.

That being said...your a [bleep]ing [bleep] douchebag, and none of your advice will ever (or should ever) be taken seriously because of it.

disregard good advice because the giver is a douche

As for the fact there's the 'uncharted' areas, it's only reasonable. As the game progresses, so will the size of the WM. It's not a perfect square, so you'll have some unfilled zones.

However, it's fun to speculate what goes in them. :)

These squares are pieces of land which haven't been released yet, but will when the quest or mission for to unlock them is released.

Add me if you so wish: SwreeTak

They're probably hidden content inaccessible to us. Or there so players make topics like these for us to speculate over nothing but forms ideas & interesting storylines for Jagex to use in-game.

How do I put this..

Um..

Duuuuhhhhhh?

Back in Classic anything that wasn't land was just shown on the world map as water. We had long lines of straight-edged water and I'm not talking about the water that wears Xs to show that it's straight-edge either.

Anything that isn't specifically identified as something on the map is just something that has yet to be added, coded, devloped, etc.

It'll all be filled in eventually, or under Jagex goes bankrupt from all the bad loans they gave out to the Gowers to buy a house.

In a pic before Asgarnia was released, you see a vast black space, barbarian Village and the black space was divided by a gate

They're obviously just part of the map that hasn't been drawn/released yet and they'll undoubtedly move into it at some point with a new update.

Thanks to Quarra for the awesome sig!

Xbox360 Gamertag = Tintin113

I remember before the slayer tower was released they updated the map to say like "Coming ____" or something like that.

They're unexplored parts of the world, that's all. From what's been calculated from coordinates, the known map is a very small portion of the entire globe, there a lot more unknown than known.

Jagex isn't going to suddenly fill in the whole lot at once, they will chisel away at it with updates until they run out of planet.

EDIT: And let me tell you, that will take a long time.

THE EVIL SQUARE SHIELDS OF DOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!

Nah, my idea is that the Varrock Museum kudos thing is tied in to the "Master Quest" which is tied in to a new area. Whatever the concept though, the checkerboards and black square shields are just unexplored parts of the world map.

Everyone should quote Evil Dave more often. Although I do agree with you about the "Master Quest" thing.

Just a cool thing i noticed, whever you attack something underground, and you quickly climb the ladder, you automatically turn and run north (as if your running towards your enemy to attack them again). maybe this means that all underground places are located in these "squares of doom".

A great example is the wilderness agility arena ladder (the one that leads down to the skeleton place were you go if you fail the log balance or rope swing). when you land inside of there, you get attacked by skeletons, naturally. but when you click on the ladder to climb, and right before you click the ladder, the skeleton attacks you, you run north upon climbing the ladder.

Sound convincing enough? try it out next time your in a cave

use a sextant to see where you're at when you're in a dungeon that helps

i think audrey is right about this

Runescape is made up of multiple 'levels'. This was talked about in the High Detail dev diary in context of the new water graphics. From memory there are 4 or 5 levels for each square of world map.

When you go up/down a ladder, you move to a different level, but not necessarily on the same square.

Dungeons may be on a particular level within the uncharted space, but are unlikely to be on ground level, as that would break their ability to use it for real ground. However I'd expect a huge majority of current dungeons to be within the current known map space, as that would be easier for Jagex to manage.

As others have said, the black squares are uncharted/undeveloped parts of the map that are slowly being developed and revealed. If someone had a world map from original RS2 release to compare against the current world map, it'd probably be pretty clear. Also, it would be quite interesting for someone to map out (pun intended ) updates since RS2 and what map space was unlocked with each to see if they have any pattern (e.g., large chunk of map space added once per year) - although I doubt there is a set pattern.

The massive quest will undoubtedly unlock a good chunk of new map space. The question is: how much and where?

WARNING: Prone to ramble ... but you probably already know that!

Before HD came out these areas just used to be black on the maps, all they did was change the colors, they are just areas with nothing coded for people to access them yet.

Alright I finally got around to trying to post the pictures up. It's my first time so if nothing is there, bear with me lol. Oh and just to let you know, the first pic is of the world map but when i was altering the size and everything it became really pixelated and may be hard to make out.

Oh and thanks for everyone who has posted so far. I just wanted to bring this topic up and it seems as though most of you agree it is unreleased land that we'll get later. Maybe we can also talk about how you think it'll be released, with what updates, when it'll be released, what these lands may offer us, etc. I just wanted to give my ideas on those blank parts of the map and start ideas or whatever.

But underground areas are located on a separate level. Jagex stated this in a Development Diary of HD, that there are multiple levels to RuneScape, I think 0 is more dungeons, not sure though.

We should send Evil Dave a message about this.
