What do you do?(Where do you work? What is your occupation?)

I'm currently a full time student at college ( 8:30 AM to 3:55 PM). I'm on a programming course (well this first session of 6 in two years, we're mixed with the rest of the computer science students). Can't wait till next session, even with the things I learned in C++, it's still not a challenge. I have heard that people that graduate in programming from the college I go make an average of CAD $970+/week, and also, at the beginning of the second year, most of the students already have a future job at some company. I also heard it's amazingly easy to find a job in programming, at least in my region.

You can make way more with C/C++/Python programming than $970 canadian per week. My friend makes more per year with a programming job than I've made with any business, without giving an exact figure, it's around $250k american per year (though way less if you don't include the project extras and bonuses)

With 21 day working months and 8-10 hour shifts, that's around $900USD per day. By a guy who is merely 3 years post-grad. There are few professions in the world with such good wages and salaries, other than specialist doctors and lawyers. Most people slave away with some $30k annual.

Coding takes extreme patience though :P Brain killer... I know basic C++ by interest and earlier study, but couldn't do it for a job like you're probably going to.

A programming job is one I'm seriously considering.

Does anyone know how I could start up my own web design company and attract customers, because I could do it if I knew how to start the business.

Oversaturated market, there are so many amazing multi-million design companies in the business you will just become disappointed. I'd kindly recommend checking professional firms like D2P or Red2 (who actually partnered with Microsoft), they have 50+ employees and huge portfolios, it's crazy to compete with them.

If you freelance, the competition is also huge. Just putting it bluntly: It's not worth it.

Well, since you seem to know alot more then most of my friends about the computer industry, would I be more likely to get a good job in programming or in graphics? As I am just about to enter the point where I will have to choose which one I want to do...

Still working at the same supermarket. I will soon get fired because I become 18 in Febuary -.-

Its great though, we are all friends of eachother. The work isnt hard at all, so its easy-money.

I worked on fridays from 17:00 to 24:00/1:00/2:00 in a restaurant as a dish-washer past weeks, the payment was better but most of the time it felt like slave labour. No matter how hard you work, you just cant keep up with all the dirty plates/forks/knifes/spoons/lots of other objects that you have to clean and carry away.

It always ran out late anyway, so I quit past friday.

I am still looking for another job, Im sure I can get better jobs as a student. :)

Probably easier in programming, since companies will also take fresh graduates due to being in dire need of coders. For graphics design you will very likely need some sort of arts degree to even be considered for employment.

Now that you reminded me, Nadril on tip.it actually studies graphics design (if I'm not mistaken, he's almost finished). Maybe he can elaborate on that field if you're more interested in gfx. Both jobs would earn you pretty good money, plus it's creative work, meaning there are a thousand ways to solve a problem or create something, as long as you adhere to the requests of the developer of course.

Heck, beats an ordinary office job any day, even more so if you get to develop things relevant to your interests (like video game coding or graphic designing)

I'm a CLERK OF COURTESY.

My duties include, but are not limited to:

Courtesy

Clerking of said courtesy

Bringing in shopping carts

Sweeping the store

Slacking off and getting 10.50 an hour to do it

I'm also a student, but that's boring compared to grocery store jobs.

where the hell do you work? I worked for Dominion and the store was huuuuuuuge and sometimes I'm the only clerk on the clock. I got paid 8.25/hr

I work at a chocolate store now (Lindt) and get paid 9.25 for doing BS work. I feel like a [bleep] working in that store, but I get paid so...

For those who live outside the UK, it's like a posh Wal Mart :D

The pay is enough to keep me satisfyed for a week or two, but with the amount of overtime they get me doing it's more like a month (i get paid monthly btw)

Would be super cool to meet some other Waitrose employees on here

College. Also working at a retirement home as a waiter. It's an okay job but not when a resident [cabbage]s himself in the middle of the dining room and doesn't even realise it.

I work in a supermarket.

My main department is Stock control which includes, but not limited to....

- Counting stock across the whole of the Health and Beauty department over a period of five weeks and counting the entirety of stock on tobacco kiosk the week after, then the cycle starts again.

- I check that we get the stock in for promotions, if they are not set up by head office then I either try and get head office to fix it, or I work with the manager of the department to come to a decision on what we will put out instead.

- I do what is called "gap scan" which entails me walking around the department and scanning all that is out of stock and putting out out of stock labels. With a system generated report i go and look for the products that the system think we have in store. If we have it, i remove it from the system and put it out, if we don't have it then the system generates an order for some more to be delivered.

- I discontinue products that we are not going to be stocking any more and i move products around to fill the space to increase availability of other products.

That is the main parts of my actual job role, however I dont remember a day when i spent my entire shift working in my department.

I am often helping out on checkouts, picking products for the home shopping deliveries and helping out in the pharmacy when they are short staffed.

*EDIT* Also helping out in the garage.

I am on a options programme at the moment to become management :-)
