Lenticular_J
I've never seen this to be true outside of TV or movies. It's sorta true. If you take it less extreme, it is. Although nowadays there isn't so much of a nerd/jock division as a goth/others division, I've noticed. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Deiophobus
I'm not popular at all, but I don't think it's because of other people being jerks, or any of those stereotypes there. I'm just not a very likable person.
Wongtong
I think I'm a bit weird, but that's it. Generally, I find that I'm quite fun. D: But maybe that's just me -_- I like to do crazy stuffs, but I care about studying and education while I'm at it because I don't want to be an attention-seeking hobo all my life. At this age, I don't care about being 'different'. Rebdragon
Be weird all you want, it's the odd balls that make life fun. Just don't be like dizzle with the silly anti-establishment geek attitude. That's just asking to be a social outcast with absolutely no justification for doing so (contrary to said loser mindset that being "in" means being a jerk, which is more based on a circular attempt of justifying being an outcast). So basically I act normal when I'm out having fun, when I'm at home I'm pretty different from the normal. Sounds like your a poser. You could say that, but you could also say I'm a person who could fit in with 2 completely different social groups and I choose to hang out with the group who has much more fun and act accordingly to save myself some hardship / slagging. In Ireland the definition of a poser would more be of a person who trys to fit into a group he doesn't belong to and doesn't succeed, I do fit in so I'm not a poser, I'm just part of the group. I'm sorry dude, I know you're trying to be honest and sincere, but anytime I see someone talking about themselves as a cool jock+great person+WoW/RS player on an online forum to people they do not know and will never know in their lives, I get skeptical. Not in the sense that what you're saying isn't believable, but in the sense that the very fact that you even feel a need to say it makes it less believable. Even if you're properly responding to a thread (sort of), my first inclination is not one of trust. I'm not popular at all, but I don't think it's because of other people being jerks, or any of those stereotypes there. I'm just not a very likable person. Chin up ol' fellow :D . fakeitormakeit
I believe being what you actually are is important. People who attempt to act different around people (or normal in some cases) are being liars to themselves and society. True potential can be achievable through being "weird". A weird person is possiblely a genius in the making. I for one am greatly liked amongst my peers if I don't say so myself, and I'm watch you would call eccentric but it's "entertaining and yet I probably learn more from you then a teacher". By combining many ideologies and cultures, I have become a very unique individual which great leadership and learning abilities. Different is not bad, infact revolutions are started by that "eccentric" one. aeternitatis
Who else is intent on shaking the very foundations of our lives? Who else wants to claim gravity doesn't pull us down, it pulls us up, and we're all upside-down? Go get 'em, tigers. Made me smile. At school, I don't listen, I look lost all the time and everyone thinks I'm a mad stoner. I'm not quiet, and I do talk to people, and when I talk to people I usually don't they're like "Woah, I thought you were baked everyday." I have friends, yeah, and I'm not some nerd but I kinda get why people think I'm stoned. "Only by going too far can one find out how far one can go." T.S. Since when am I anti-establishment? I don't do it just for the sake of doing it, I do it because most of it is BS. (this is the U.S., everything is BS. London sounds nice.) 2. Dizzle229
I know what my post says, I was there. I see what you're saying. The list DOES contradict what I just said, that was my mistake. I guess what makes a jerk is just arrogance. Think of some historic problems. 1. Slavery, and afterward segregation, was due to people believing they were better than blacks. 2. Nazi Germany, need I say more? But anyway, you can be "cool" and still be a good person. I don't know if it's just me, but people were terrible last year, but this year being good seems to be the new thing. Can't say I'm complaining. But let's not turn this into a flame war. It's alright to be different, so long as you're doing it for yourself. There's a difference between being an individual and screaming "Fight the power maaaaaan!" Ex. I like to read Edgar Allen Poe. I really like The Tell Tale Heart and The Black Cat. Because of this, people see me as a goth/emo. It annoys me, but I certainly don't do it just to piss people off. Edit: I like Zierro's analogy. l0rd
I think the science of Love and Emotion could be categorized under Neurophysiology, Cognative Science, and other brain sciences. As humans, it is our nature to be "different" as we want to succeed and do the best we can. Possibly by making ourselves "different" we can feel as though we are taking a new tactic; so many people with so many ideas have gone and went. Another reason some may way to be different is because we are dissatisfied with the norm or majority. We feel something needs to be revolutionized and acting upon it is the most powerful thing that we can do as one. Flyingjj
Since when is there a 'normal' ? Quoted for truth. I might say I'm a bit more "different" than most people, but that's strange to define in itself. I am quite spontaneous sometimes, and I do things that a lot of people don't. But, then again I probably am just a crazy genius at heart. Going back to the original post, one thing I am convinced of is that there is another form of energy other than the combustion system we have built everything on. Giordano
Different? Yes. Weird? Hmm, no. Most people catorgize me with the nerd/geek group, but when I do something not to standard, people don't bag it on me...they not jerks. While they'll most certainly do so at another "nerd/geek" type person. Eh, maybe I'm not so nerdy as I think I am. Ginger_Warrior
Am I different? Yes. I'd rather die than follow popular culture or societal norms aimlessly. It sounds so boring. When I did a Myers-Briggs test a while ago, the site claimed only 1.5% of men have the same personality type as me according to the test. Only 2.5% of females have it. Only one other person in my whole year at high school would probably have had the same personality type as me. That made me go "wow". I can never focus as well as other people. I always have a tendency to drift off and day dream for a while before snapping myself back into reality. As humans, it is our nature to be "different" as we want to succeed and do the best we can. Possibly by making ourselves "different" we can feel as though we are taking a new tactic; so many people with so many ideas have gone and went. Careful with the objectivity of that statement. Some people may like to be different but a lot of people also like to feel secure by abiding by the social norms and not making themselves noticeable in public. Electricity comes, for the most part, from where, again? Usually from a 110 kV+ power transmission grid, which is fueled by a turbine that feeds on boiled water steam from nuclear fission or the currently most popular (and also most polluting) one, the burning of coal and petroleum. Maybe some people think electricity just "comes out of the wall" So yes.. You're right in saying that powering our society basically comes down to fire. Gas, water and wind-powered electricity is also becoming popular though, they are quite ecological choices. The only problem is that few nations have the will to spend millions of dollars on wind turbines, etc., when they can just use the old sources and spend no extra.
