How would you deal with this??

Featured Replies

Three years when I moved to a different city, I changed my opticians because they didn't have a store there. I contacted them and told them that I was with a different company and they said there was no issues with it.

SO it is all fine, until last year when I moved back in with my parents, I have stayed with my new company because I am happy with their services and their range of glasses.

Throughout the past year I have received about six notifications from them telling me that I am overdue an eye test. I have been into the store about four times, asking them to take me off of their register. The first time I went in, they said it was taken off, then the second time they said it was system error and they assured me that they had removed me.... what is their excuse for the other two times?

I had started to forget about it, until I got home from work on monday to find a reminder that i am apparently overdue an eye test (I actually had an eye test three months ago). This annoyed me, but i was going to ignore it.

I got home from work today to find that they have sent me yet another letter, kindly telling me that they have merged with another company and have given me a £30 off my next pair of glasses coupon ( I may point out that it is not redeemable on designer glasses... erm, thanks, but i have liked the last 4 pairs of red or dead glasses, so I will stick with that!).

This is beginning to feel like they are hounding me to go and use them again. I am tempted to write a letter to complain to them, because clearly going into their store is not getting me anywhere, but I am not exactly one for complaining to companies.

What would you do in this situation?

Complain, or just keep on recycling the junk mail they keep sending?

Talk to their manager? Like complain face to face or something.

Go with a friend if you don't want to do that yourself.

I think if you wrote a letter or something, they would just ignore you.

Keep going to the store and ask them to remove you and if they can't do it pretend to be really angry and that will scare them into removing you fo sho.

Complain, and remind them that it's harassment.

Oh, I wasn't serious.

You *might* have a chance with the Police Department, for harassment charges, but it's a long shot.

I think making some sort of complaint, be it via a letter or face to face, is in order. I've heard of loads of other companies doing this, including energy companies.

Let's not rant and rave like the little school children we try not to be here.

I'm not sure if it works for non-electronic means of communication, but the Information Commissioner usually deals with spam. Whatever the regulator is for junk mail, contact them if you feel they're harassing you.

You might find more information at Direct.gov.uk.

EDIT: I found this. Sign up for the Mailing Preference Service, and if that doesn't stop the letters, contact the industry ombudsman.

Not sure if you could under your local law system, but if I was in that situation I would write a letter about how unprofessional they're acting, how their staff can't seem to perform something very basic and if they send you one more letter which isn't a letter of apology you'll bring charges of harassment against the store in question.

Just phone them up and explain the problem I guess. Chances are what you're getting is from an automated system of sorts.

The fact is that they have not deleted the details when it should have been deleted off the system.

"Those ridiculous free introductory or subscription type letters that you get in the mail

often have a postage-guaranteed return postcard for your convenience. The next one you

get, paste it on a brick and drop it in the mailbox. The company is required by law to pay

the postage. You can also get rid of all your garbage this way."

Dont think that would work here but whatever.

I got yet another letter from them on monday.

I went into town yesterday to buy a dress and decided to talk to them. They have been taken over by another company so i went to the new people and told them i was not happy with them keeping my details, and not removing me from their books.

He took my details and he reassured me that i will be taken off of their books.

Whether or not this happens, i dont know, I seriously hope they do though.

I don't think it matters that much if they have your details or not. Your info is already being sold off as it is, not a big deal if one more company has it.

Just 1 letter?!

Be right back, off to empty my spam folder. I think it has about 500 messages in it now...

Lol, irony.

I understand how they would need to identify you to know which details to take off, but i still found it kinda funny how they need to take more details to take the origional details off.

Anyways, ignoring my fail sense of humour, provided the manager does what he says, you should be fine.

Has he given you a time frame of when it will happen so you know when to check?

You didnt mention one, so... :?

If that is the case then threaten them for breaching the Data Protection Act, just sound like you know what you're talking about and that should do the trick. I'd just throw the letters away personally but if it bothers you that much then that is the way to go.

Threatening a large company is never the way to go. Anger shows weakness and they will just bother you more.

Maybe threatening was the wrong word to use on my part, all I meant was making it clear that they are in the wrong and that you won't accept it, I didn't mean that there should be any anger shown.

No, by now its passed just demanding them to take you off their lists, its time for some retaliation - take a stand!
