Best Instrumental Song Ever?

Textures by Cynic is pretty awesome, but other than that the only instrumental thing that sticks in my mind is the album Probing Tranquility by Sleep Terror - half an hour of Technical Instrumental Death Metal bliss... =P~

Call of Kthulu, Orion, and Suicide and Redemption - Metallica does great instrumentals in general.

Overture 1928 by Dream Theater is good too, though quite short

Santana's Europa is probably my personal favorite. In my opinion it's one of the best songs written. Samba Pa Ti is close, as is the one he did with Eric Clapton on Supernatural, though I'm not sure that's instrumental.

Joe Satriani's Revelation as well, along with Always with me, Always with you.

I really really like Last of the wilds by nightwish, but I wouldnt say its the best. I just cant think of any I like more at the moment.

Recommendation:DPP has an instrumental version of ALL the songs. Most sound better.

Suicide and Redemption may be the best song on Death Magnetic :|

The Eleventh Commandment:Thou Shalst only say "Amen, brother".

Amen, brother

Amen, brudda (referring to the 10th commandment)

amen Bruder! (german ftw)

I'm invulnerable to everything, except Lenin and Dragoonson.

That's impossible.

Wizards in Winter - Trans-Siberian Orchestra

The Black Gate Opens - Howard Shore/London Philharmonic Orchestra with Sir James Galway (RotK OST)

An entire thread about instrumental songs, and not a single post-rock song?

:o

It's hard to select a single song, but a personal favorite is "First Breath After Coma" by Explosions in the Sky.

With nightmares and with dreams

Will no one lay the laurel wreath

When silence drowns the screams?

Not completely instrumental, but A Man A Plan A Canal Panama by the Fall of Troy. Also The Gallery by Muse.

EDIT:

Apart from those, I really enjoy Ocean by the John Butler Trio..

Not trying to brag, but I've seen him play it live, and it is quite a piece of music. :) He really is excellent live if you ever get the chance to see him.

I had just written an instrumental last week, and titled it Ocean, so I listened to this one out of curiosity. It EASILY trumps my two other suggestions. This song is EPIC, and I do not use that word loosely.

That's not an instrumental.

I really like Octavarium by Dream Theater.

That isn't an instrumental either...

But on the topic of Dream Theater epics, A Change of Seasons is dramatically better.

And speaking of Dream Theater instrumentals, Ytse Jam is great.

TSO - Christmas Eve / Sarajevo 12 -24 is a likely candidate (it's actually a remake / adaptation of Carol of the Bells), but it's more powerful than the original version. Btw, Nox Arcana have a pretty awesome - if a bit on the eerie side - version of the same song.

"Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics. It isn't even about who plays the heaviest and fastest. It is about invoking a sense of wonder and magnitude that no other genre can depict."

I never said that A Change of Seasons was instrumental, only that it is an epic.
