Global warming - Do you mind it?

Oh Ember. You do realize that Antarctica and Greenland won't just up and decide, one day, "[bleep] YOU GUYS" and implode into the ocean, right? It'll be a gradual thing, and if there will end up being one massive sploosh, there will be plenty of warning signs. The pot metaphor isn't exactly true in this case. Try a medium-sized swimming pool, with several huge patches of ice on solid inner tubes at separate corners. Antarctica and Greenland have landmasses under them - they melt, not crash.

If ice bergs falling into the ocean would throw the world into destruction, we would have been gone a long, long, looooong time ago.

Also, the fact that you're disregarding how most nations' interiors are actually the least populated is interesting. Take the great plains of the US, for example - or the western deserts.

I believe most scientists' large estimates of flooding is 10 miles, worst case, please correct me if I'm wrong - but that is a ridiculously huge amount of water. That would hardly lead to world destruction.

There won't be massive tsunamis raging through the world. Nothing that extreme. And there won't be military actions because of natural disasters. Indonesia took it pretty calmly.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

No one thinks he is. Anyone intelligent who is the least bit concerned about it will see what real scientific research has to say.

I always turn off lights/equipment that aren't being used, but if Global Warming is responsible for England getting colder and colder, I do not like it. :-# I doubt it will be as bad as made out however, but in my eyes, I'm likely to be long gone before anything devastating happens.

i mind it and it would be good if it would go away, but apart from changing to energy efficient light globes and simple things like that fixing it will come at a huge cost to everyone's quality of life in the short term. in the long term its worth it, but in the next few years all we are doing is pooring $$$ down the drain into something which isnt actually effecting us very much yet.

that leaves 3 kinds of people on the planet:

-the kind that are willing to poor everything and anything into prevention, destroying our economy. in a few years we will all be struggling to find food and be crippled by disease but it will be ok because we know the climate isnt in as much danger anymore.

-the kind that are willing to put some money toward it but still want to save enough to try and somehow save the economy from doom.

-the kind that want to live the best life THEY can, or for the next few decades atleast. they want to spend there $$$ on fun exciting things to enjoy, so when they die they can look back and say life was great! there kids may have a very different life though.

I think that it was The Economist that reported that the cost of dealing with climate change would be 1% of GDP. That's hardly going to lead to struggles to find food or an epidemic of disease.

The United States spent just $3 billion on sustainable energy last year - equal to 36 hours of spending by the Pentagon on defence, according to Sachs, who is director of the Earth Institute at New York's Columbia University.

The Earth has a history of going through global warming and cooling stages. I'm sure with the people's intelligence in general we can find many ways to avert it in the distant future. I'm conscious of global warming but to be honest i really don't care or let it affect my lifestyle/living habits.

What?

My thoughts can better be summarized by Tim McIlrath:

[hide=Collapse]When our rivers run dry, and our crops cease to grow...

When our summers grow longer and winters won't snow...

From the banks of the ocean, to the ice in the hills...

To the fight in the desert where progress stands still...

When we've lost our will that's how we'll know

That this is not a test

Oh no, this is cardiac arrest

Of a world too proud to admit it's mistakes

We're crashing into the ground as we all fall from grace.

When the air that we breathe becomes air that we choke...[/hide]

We've got to better ourselves. The planet won't go anywhere, but we (meaning the human race) sure will. If we let global warming progress then we risk our future on this planet as a species. Granted none of us will be around to see if global warming really does the human species in, but I think one would be wrong to think that we aren't affecting the planet in a negative manner.

Global Warming is a conspiracy maaaan!

Don't believe the government! They're lying!! Just like the Moon Landing!!! :o

On a serious note: Actually, that was partly a serious note. :? I don't really care about Global Warming, if it's gonna happen it's gonna happen, that's that.

Australia's been hot ever since I moved here.

But global warming is annoying me like crazy. Thank God for air conditioners or I would probably die in my sleep because of a heat stroke.

I honestly do care, & I'm not making it up to sound like a good person. But the truth is, people of the 21st Century just don't give a f*** about what happens to people in the 22nd Century.

Only fear God,

Know the weapons of the weak,

The weakness of the hard.

"Ahh, the trees are being cut down!"

"Ahh, the sky is being polluted with toxins!"

"Ahh, we need to correct our behavior and become one with nature! How did we ever escape the harmonious grip of balance?"

People should stop whining that humans are taking over the planet and ruining everything really just relies on a few basic beliefs about the world. Among the more important ones is that humans are somehow separate from the rest of the natural world. Also the idea that our unique presence here is awkward to the rest of earth. Do you really believe that the earth will gratefully "breathe a huge sigh of relief when we are gone"? Humans are somehow viewed as a weird pimple on the [wagon] of the earth, making Gaia itch herself because of our overpopulation, disease, and poor choices. If only we had quit evolving!

As selfish it may sound to call ourselves unique, how can something conscious (humans) evolve from something supposedly non-conscious (A planet)? You have to re-define consciousness or re-define the world to make our minds ontologically different.

...As if the circumstances we find ourselves in is some dreadful, cosmological mistake. Things are usually seen as an anomaly only when they are misunderstood.

What I do believe is that we drive animals to extinction. The rate of extinction in the Amazon is based on the rate of deforestation. We should show respect to mother nature but a lot of people are exaggerating.

Hmm, I think this has been my first serious post on Tif ever.

I'm one of those people who believes in global warming, but not that we've created any serious impact in it.

And yeah, I was walking my dog today in jeans and a t-shirt, I sure as hell don't mind. January 3rd in northern Midwest USA and I can walk around sans long-sleeves is grand to me. Maybe I'll be telling my grandkids about when it was sooo cold that the water wouldn't evaporate from the lakes outside.

u can already see effects from it right now

hurricanes in carrabean that are longer seasons and records all very often

heat in africa making it harder for people to grow the food etc etc im sure there more examples that bring death right now

if this is made by humans? i think we are making the natrual phenomoman worse i mean all that pollution crap gotta do something right?

One scientist proposed that pollution is actually making global warming less drastic with pollution because we're putting a filthy umbrella over our heads to block the sun. Not saying I agree or disagree, just putting that out there. I'll search for the source.

I believe it's blown extremely out of proportion. However, there's no reason we shouldn't be striving to reduce our pollution and energy footprints for pure reasons like cost efficiency and health.

I'm also proud to live in Texas of which 1/3 all energy used by the state is wind powered (and growing), where over 10,000 households are completely solar powered, and where clean-air processes for oil production were pioneered.

Also, Earth is a big planet. I think we're full of ourselves saying that we will destroy it considering that even if we were to annilhate ourselves with nuclear warfare this planet will thrive. The Earth is not getting any warmer than it should be, we are only fearful of the perceived threat against our civilization.

Global Warming isn't all that it's cracked up to be. It will not destroy the world, and it will not destroy humanity.

But, we are going to run out of fossil fuels, and I believe this to be much more important crisis to deal with, so we're going to have to 'go green' anyway.

This.

I'm not sure to the level of urgency that it is, but I see no reason why we shouldn't seek reduce emissions and find alternative energies anyway. I also think it's extremely naive and willfully ignorant to deny that humans have had a huge impact. Provide real evidence beyond the equivalent of Creation Science, and maybe the rest of the scientific community will listen to you. Until then, I remain convinced that humans and their acts of industry and farming (meat industry) are the main causes of sudden changes in the Earth's temperature.

-Only read first post-

The Earth is heating up anyways on it's own, without human intervention. However, us humans are speeding it up a good bit, and I would like to delay the inevitable, or maybe put us back on track I should say.

But what are we gonna do when another ice age comes along? :?

We are by definition, in an ice age (because we have Polar Ice Caps).

Dinosaurs lived for millions of years tropically.

We can, too.

On the note of dinosaurs ... Do you ever wonder if they were as sentient as us? Or moreso? They were around a whole lot longer than us (collectively), I think it's definitely possible.

Dinosaurs had tiny, tiny brains. There's a ratio called the Encephalization Quotient which shows the size of a creatures brain compared to its body. Humans have huge brains, and our EQ sits at around 5. I don't think there's a single dinosaur who even comes close to 1. To put it in perspective, elephants are around the 0.6 mark and a triceratops around 0.1.
