patrick2503
This has been playing on my mind since the beginning of my Scape adventures nearly 5 years ago, Is playing Runescape taboo? Now before you start I guess I should give you some information about myself. Well I'm 19, I'm Aussie!! woo woo! I'm a guy..? I'm a second year Electrical Mechanic apprentice and I love my job heaps. Keeping fit is pretty important to me and I ride my bike or jog at least 5 hours a week and I'm also heaps into Downhill Mountain Biking at the moment, DH 4 Life? I enjoy an ice cold brew with my mates and hanging out with the ladies  haha. [hide=My story..]Well I would have to put it down to my younger brother. He was the person who got me into the game in the first place. I decided to join up and play the game with him aswell and you know what? I was hooked! Bad. When I first started the computer would be on for 3+ hours a night even if I had homework to do. Not too long after me starting, he quit. Not only did he quit, he also had it in his mind that the game was stupid/nerdy/waste of time etc and he would make it known to other people that I now played and what a (insert various abusive words) I was for playing the game. Now not only did I get a bit of smack talk for it but it also made my grades fall pretty badly. I know this was my decision but it still makes me feel like an idiot for doing it. In a sense I have to thank Jagex for making the game and getting me to play it. My reasons for this are that while I played the game for a few hours a night, a lot of people I knew were getting into all sorts of things like drinking/drugs/sex/fighting (not that I have a problem with sex or drinking now..) and they started going down the wrong sorts of tracks in life. These actions made a lot of people get into a lot of trouble and life threatening situations that I wouldn't have thought a 15/16/17 year old should be going through. I was stuck inside glued to the screen and in a way I'm thankful for this because while some people got involved with the wrong crown and changed character, I was safe and well. Now that I'm a bit more grown up, I'd have to say that I am exactly who I wanted to be and everything seems to have worked itself out now. My family and friends are non the wiser that a lot of it is down to me playing the game. I still feel somewhat weird for playing Rs now..[/hide] What do you think? Is Scape something people don't like openly talking about? Tell me what you think. Share your stories, everyone has one and I want to hear about it. Opieous
Interesting. Personally i feel RS is a waste of time. And you'll now ask why i play it? Because i like playing it. People do call me an idiot for playing RS but it is in moderation... 3-4 days in a month or so if i find time for it. Being 22, job, travelling and fitness takes up my time... Yes, it more of a taboo 99 Woodcutting | 99 Constitution | 99 PrayerScapin since July 05'

I agree with that and I can't tell you why exactly I play the game.. but I do and yes it's fun. The time spent playing could be much better spent on something else I know. Juhnie
If you admit publicly at our school that you play RuneScape, you're dead. :? Seriously, I can't see why some people think it is so bad if someone plays it. It's just a freaking game. SomeWelshGuy
I don't see what the big deal is about. RuneScape is a complete waste of time, like every other game, but d'you know what, it's fun, and fun is good. It's something to do when your bored, and being on crew gives me something to do, it gives me a real sense of achievement when you make something, and get your work appreciated by people. If I wouldn't have played RuneScape I would not some of the amazing people I know today. On crew we have a a little "motto", Life > Crew. Same applies here, Life > Game. RuneScape, and all other games, are the least important things in the world, but if you have fun playing it, by all means play it. Retired Tip.It Crew Mapper. patrick2503
Everyone who plays should have that knowldge aswell that Life is much more then any game could ever be. But when you begin to get the two mixed up.. that is where things seem to go wrong. n_odie
Life is just a huge popularity contest IMO. Why not be proud that YOU choose to play RuneScape. If you feel it is a good way to spend free time there is nothing wrong with it. If you find yourself saying that you play too much, then take the hint. Now, I personally keep it to myself and only talk with those I want to about it. But, Rs doesn't demand so much time that it takes importance to other things in life. (Tip.It does that :XD: ) If someone wants to taboo me because of my choices of free time, I feel sorry for there lack of expressiveness in life. And I better stop now, if not, a rant of how sex and alcohol is viewed as "cooler" than other peoples choices of entertainment may ensue.... patrick2503
Yea I certainly don't want the thread to turn down that kind of road with the peoples opinions of life choices. Will H
It is a bit, but seriously, who cares? I enjoy it, and that's the most important thing when it comes to picking entertainment. ~ W ~

SonicSilver
I know what you mean dude. RuneScape is ruining my life. I find that I can either be REALLY into it and play it 3-4 hours a day or not play it at all. There is no inbetween, no playing for 30 mins or an hour because then I have to lose interest and get on with real life things. RuneScaep is the worst addiction I have come across, that is how I would describe it.

patrick2503
When I was asked by my parents if I was going to complete my last year at highschool I was playing Rs and decided not to go back simply because I wanted some quiet to get back to my game. :? Merchant0125
It's all in the balance really, but one thing to take into account is the fact most people at school only care about combat or money. No one even thinks for a minute you might have friends on there...... I've died 8 times but i don't tell people what happened because 99% of the time they don't belive me :wall: So you admit you are in fact, a cat? 5 years on and I still havent seen a horse Riding next skill?
toxxy
I play tons of games online and catch flak from at least one person for each game, at least. But each one of those people who give me hell for playing a game I like has something much, much worse that I can make fun of.
brunokiller
I'm not addicted to games, but I am to these forums lol. :wall: No one irl knows that I play besides the friends that got me into playing which I hardly see anymore. My blog
Robert_de_Sable
I quit a while ago. The game's a massive waste of time, but guess what? As long as you have time to waste, who the hell cares? My big rule when I played RuneScape was that it always came last. After friends, after school, etc. [English translation needed]
nyyankees588
Interesting, and hell yeah. Although I've quit; when I did play I didn't tell anyone outside of friends that played runescape with me. It was one of those things that I was truly somewhat ashamed to play, and still am. To realize that I wasted so much of my life on a game like this is mind boggling. finalheaven
to me its not a taboo its just adictive! runescape is fun thats why its adictive who doesnt enjoy fun things? sure i doubt anyone doesn't right? but to sustain a healthy social life playing less is always good :D real life always comes first do what is important first leave the fun for the last (work, school, meeting ppl exercising>play)
3hitm4g3u
I'm in the 'popular' clique so doing something stereotypically 'geeky' such as playing runescape just adds depth to my persona in the eyes of my peers. I'm just glad they don't know the full extent of my runescape addiction :ohnoes:
RawrTiger
I'm 22, I work and play RuneScape in my spare time (I've been playing since right after they implemented RS2) when I don't have a building design job to do. Not to mention, I've actually been inspired by some of the architecture in the game and put it into some of my designs and people tend to like my stuff. I don't see what the big deal is, but of course I don't openly admit to being an online gamer out in public though; Outside of classic nintendo because that apparently makes you more awesome and less nerdy than if you play RuneScape or WoW. Art in my avatar was drawn for me by the love of my life. <
Zierro
People just naturally have irrational views on many things, just because their friends feel that way and they don't want to be left out. A prime example would be homosexuality. If you think about it, there's nothing wrong about it yet it's one of the biggest taboos in the world. A lot of people just don't want to be seen supporting gay rights.
