winter needs to be done so i can start running outside again :(

You guys only run inside? That's terrible; I'd run on my own

I just don't run at all during the winter. I'll probably start up again in April, when most of the snow is gone and the temperature hovers above 5C.

Hehe, i just noticed this thread. I'll cut to the chase and just post personal records.

I run for tennis conditioning.

100m (with reaction time and blocks) 11,49 (august 2009)

400m: 53,26 set Dec 12th 2009

Mile: 4:37, set 14th Jan 2010

3km: 10:17 set Jan 21st 2010 (favorite distance)

5km: 17:58 set Dec 10th 2009

It's been too long since I've run an 8km, 10km, 15k or 20k to give an accurate time.

I'm not stretching right! My body hurts... But I have checked out some websites so maybe I can set things right.

I've been running two miles every day (I can't even manage that very well) and it's very hard with the hills around here. Might start going to the gym as well, 2miles feels insignificant.

How much do you think you have improved? First track meet of the season for me is tomorrow. Its a freshman invite, and I'm running in a 4X800, 1600m, and 4X400. 3 events is gonna be though, but it just gives me more chances to compete and help the team win the meet.

Had a 102 fever over the weekend, but still running in the 4x800 this weekend at a 17 team invite. We're hoping to win it, as our team needs everything we can get to win the annual "Golden Shoe" (which we've won 3 out of the last 5 years). I haven't run a serious 800 this year, but a 2:05 might be nice

You must be amazing at tennis (or really hate running) to not run track with mile and 400 times like those

It's all about the fun though. Running isn't bad, but tennis has so many more enticing dimensions of strategy and mental capacity. Coupled with the fact that I do play tennis on a national level, it basically means everyone needs intense conditioning training to be able to compete. Times are the only real way of quantifying progress, as every match is different.

How did your track meet go?

Started my season to a good rhythm.

Last Year I finished:

5:13 for a 1600

11:25 for the 3200

15' For Long Jump

This year I started at...

5:10 for the 1600

11:23 for the 3200

15'6'' for LJ

Hopefully trying out Triple Jump (~30'-~35' would be nice)

golden shoe, what is it?

A golden colored shoe trophy that goes to the team who wins the meet.

My relay team won both the 4x800 and the 4x400, and our school won the meet. Thanks for that explanation, I can understand why you play tennis. Personally, I'm pretty uncoordinated, and love running too much, but good luck with your season!.

I want to do better at the boy's 800 meter run.

My workouts are fine, I would just like to know a strategy to not burnout. yet not go so slow. By the way, do your guys' collar bone/ front of shouler ever ache badly after sprinting a lot? (400m repeats).

I know exactly what you're talking about! I find that my attitude, and energy in a warm-up is almost always a perfect indicator for how the run itself will go: take your time, be relaxed but focused, and really think about what you're going to do in warm up. Play around, and jog around in your warm-up and loosen up.

obviously, the technique of the running itself has to be unrestrained and smooth in the same way your warm-up has progressed. A changed warm-up routine cut 15 seconds off my mile-time in the course of a weekend.

Again, for the sprinting: remember to warm up your whole body before start: free-style swimming in the air with your arms, loosening up, twisting your torso etc. should take care of minor issues like that. if it does not, some core excercise might be the next step to go.

How long do running shoes last? I've been wearing the same shoes, practically every day, for the past year. I wear them for everything not just running. I only ask because the arch in my foot has been giving me all sorts of pain lately. I'll get to about the first mile, walk for ~20 seconds to rest up, and continue running. During that cool-down, my arch feels like its on fire, but running again relieves the pain. When I get back home it'll continue to hurt throughout the day, usually sorting itself out after a nights rest.

My entire run (two to six miles depending on how bad my foot hurst) is on concrete and the cadets say that running on asphalt is better, is this true?

Anyway, I just ordered some Nike LunarGlides, which I heard were really good.

My dad, who jogs 3 times a week, changes shoes every year. March/april - oktober/november - Normal summer shoes, then winter ones (with spikes). So it's a cost of about 200 a year.

Track started Monday. I'm so out of shape - I haven't run since soccer in the fall, and that was running in cleats >.<

Been doing about 3 miles a day, and I guess I haven't been doing so bad, but it's been tough.. But there's a lot of good Freshman this year. It seems like they're all just straight-trackies. All did cross country, all did winter... I'm gonna be left in the dust >.>

Oh well. Quick question:

Are cramps just below my shoulder any sort of bad sign? I only ask because I have health class this semester, and I don't want ANGINA because ANGINA may be a sign of a more serious problem cardio problem. The pain is small, and leaves before the end of my run, so I've generally been dismissing it as just an odd cramp.

Going to try and get sub 5 minutes at a meet in SF at another meet.

hi guys! spring is here and its good to see everyone is posting. i had my first exhibition meet last friday. i ran a 1600 in 5:13 and 800 at 2:18. our team went 1-2-3-4 in each of those (and 1-2-3 in the 2 mile) myself being 4th in each. i'm 15 and i only got beat by kids 17+ (by a small margin, at that), so i guess my winter training paid off. next friday is our first official meet and i'll be running the 800 against the reigning district champion who went about 1:57 last year 0.0

right now i'll set my goals ( i might not run some of these events, but just incase i do):

10:30 3200

4:48 1600

2:03 800

53 400

i really wasn't on here much during the winter, but a few guys and i ran regularly. we did several 55 mile weeks and we're now at an 11 mile long run. someone on the team also has a garmin so we have very accurate measurements on our runs. i'm seriously thinking of buying a pair of nike frees for over easter break aswell.

well guys, its nice to be back in season. feel free to post your times and such

the 800 is one of the most versatile events and there are different ways to train for it. you can either go for a sprinting base or an endurance base.

if your going for a sprinting base (where the 800 is almost always your highest event) you'll be looking at running the 800 and 400 regularly with an occasional mile or 200. your longest run will never exceed 5 miles and the majority of your training will be done in the weight room or on the track. with a sprinting base, your form and muscle (NOT cardio health) is your ticket to success. this goes without saying that cardio health is still important to an extent. with a sprinting base during the 800 its all about getting out fast and trying to hold on.

a distance base is quite different. you'll be looking at running the 5k, 3200, 1600, and 800. the 800 and mile are your main events. of course you will do the majority of your training with distance athletes but you will probably do workouts with the mid-distance sprinters. at peak( depending on your potential) your mileage usually won't exceed 65 per week and your long run won't go far over 14. for workouts (as already stated) 200m and 400m will be your key workout distance. its all about building up a ridiculous cardio base and developing and end-all kick at the end of the race. during the race its about going out, getting where you want, and unleashing a monster kick at the end (if your not kicking at the end, your probably following more of a sprinter based training regime). you still have to keep a steady pace but its important to remain smart and alert and taking opportunities as they come.

since you haven't mentioned which base you are following (and im not saying i know everything, these are just basically the two different ways to do it) try and keep a steady but not ridiculous pace. if you want to hang with the leaders you have to be prepared for the possibility of burning out, it happens to the best of us. say you want to run a 2:10. try running a 68 first lap then taking it down to a 62 second lap. you'll see better results both physically and mentally if you do it this way as apposed to going out at 60 and then running your second lap at 70.

the usual rule is that a pair of shoes is good for 300-400 miles, depending on your weight. no matter what, after 400 miles , i'm not saying they would be unusable, but its time to start using them as just casual shoes. Personally, i used an expensive cushioning shoe from the end of last august until the end of february when i starting getting pains everywhere (probably had at least 700+ on them, just didnt have the money for another pair). then i bought a pair with less cushioning and all the pain went away. since my new shoes have less cushioning i'll be replacing them at the end of track season with somewhere around 400-500 miles on them. of course, if you are using a minimalist shoe, i believe that the durability is very different from cushioning shoes and that you should replace them when you "feel" it.

well, a 10:30 2 mile is a far cry from the 9:36 PR that our best two miler ran last year to win the league championship (i've been training with him all winter)

4:48 was only QUALIFYING time for the mile at districts last year (champion went 4:15, graduated)

2:03 is probably the most ambitious time, and the 800 will be my main event so thats what im shooting for.

a :53 400 wouldn't have even won me the freshman district title last year, but i doubt i'll be running the distance unless i get put in the 4x4
