indy500fan
The seismic activity showed that the explosion was about 1/3 or 1/4 of the nuclear bomb dropped on Nagasaki. The prevailing opinion is that it didn't quite work.
Danqazmlp
Didn't NK test a rocket last year that failed to reach the US. I personally don't see why Americans are worrying at all. It's almsot certain at the moment, if NK do anything it will be aimed at SK. SK have set their military on high alert after NK have publicly abandoned their treaty kind things with SK, and it's painfully obvious they have a massive grudge with SK (too many anacronyms yet?) From what i know, NK's internal situation is very bad, they would struggle to hold out a war, the people are starving and im sure if the military starts stretching outside of the country, the people would start a civil war. JustAGamer
Any truly offensive action (such as, say, launching a nuclear warhead) would result in at least twice as many as you sent headed back at you. Everybody knows this, and it's the reason we're all still here after the Cold War. Right now, the countries clearly don't trust each other to disarm, so we'll hopefully be still sitting in an impassé for a while. Until A: Everyone holds hands and starts singing Kumbaya (Not very likely) B: Someone crazy/stupid presses the button. (unfortunately, this is rather more likely than option A, regardless of stereotypes of the North Koreans) this link kills spam
indy500fan
Are you kidding? North Korea launching a nuclear weapon would not cause the rest of the world to launch nuclear weapons back at them. Yes, the rest of the world would destroy them, but we all know better than to start throwing nuclear bombs around. The environmental and health impact are too great. JustAGamer
...There's health impacts when firing weapons? shocker. ;) On the other hand, I doubt everyone's going to be thinking clearly when a nuclear missile is fired. Especially if we need EVERY country that has nuclear weapons to stand down. On that note, do we know exactly how many countries have nuclear weapons? Or am I just making up countries with said weapons? Odd how nobody posts the specs of their defenses on the internet... The million dollar question is: Is North Korea willing to take the risk we would think clearly and wouldn't fire nukes back? I sure hope not. EDIT: NVM, Found it Light Blue: NPT Nuclear Weapon States (China, France, Russia, UK, US) Red: Non-NPT Nuclear Weapon States (India, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan) Black: States accused of having nuclear weapons programs (Iran, Syria) Dark Blue: NATO weapons sharing weapons recipients Green: States formerly possessing nuclear weapons this link kills spam

20Rice04
The difference now this time is that North Korea will not have Stalin as a backup. But they may have allies in the Shanghai Organisation Corperation, who have notable members such as Russia, China and Khazakstan. Anyway, this just looks like the run up to World War One. In the right corner we have the Nato forces and in the left we have SCO, two of the most poerful Military capacities on the planet made up of quite a few complex alliances. And all it takes is a spark to light the powder keg eh? This time it might be in North Korea and not Sarajevo :) Look guys... I absolutely must be a mass baby-seal murderer! Rien
Honestly, men like Kim Jong-il and Omar al-Bashir make me physically ill. In their sickening pride and callousness, they cause for tremendous suffering and perpetuated poverty while they and their inner circle continue to live--unchallenged--as royalty (or, in Kim's case, as a "living god"). It's disgusting. The fact that very little can be done in face of their outrageous conduct makes it even worse. The ICC issued an arrest warrant for al-Bashir in connection with the genocide in Darfur, but as long as he remains in power, he'll never face trial; when he was indicted, he even had the audacity to mock the ruling and force a number of charitable aid organizations from Darfur in retaliation. As for Kim, the reprimands so often issued by the International Community have no effect in the slightest. He continues to flout his power regardless and practically nothing can be done about it. Further sanctions enacted by the West only serve to harm the brainwashed, impoverished people of North Korea, and Kim uses this to fuel nationalist propaganda. China alone wields some measure of influence over the North Korean government, but it's unlikely that they'll force any significant change. In cases such as these (and particularly where nuclear weapons may be involved), there seems to be no assuredly correct way in which to handle the situation. We can only hope that China will realize that North Korea's increased belligerence can only result in an arms race amongst neighboring asian countries (I believe Japan has already started considering this option)--something China definitely can't afford to let happen. I'd say it's highly likely to be China instead of Russia, so little is still actually known about internal affairs in China due to their censorship yet their not considered threats throughout the western world. They have just as much to lose as anybody else if NK go ballistic and go to war/use nukes. Total destabilisation of that part of the world would cause havock, i'm certain they wouldn't want that. To be honest, i doubt NK has any money, gets any or needs any. They are a self serving country, the people are starving, which shows they don't have the money to buy food or produce it, they put alot of effort on the military and shows of power to the people, which probably leads to having to pay very little if any people that work for the Gov. and military.
