Only Pedophiles Play Animal Crossing Say Police

In an attempt to curb child predation, the police in Missouri are now claiming that any adult who owns and plays games like Animal Crossing probably doesn't have a good reason to do so and is most likely a pedophile with bad intent.

"There is no reason an adult should have [Animal Crossing: City Folk]," says Andy Anderson, Mid-Missouri Internet Crimes Task Force.

Anderson says adults playing "Animal Crossing" and similar games are likely doing it for the wrong reasons.

Astounding. I don't think I should even have to mention that it's impossible for an adult to get in contact with a random child through Animal Crossing without first acquiring his friend code in real life, so what gives?

Given a rise in poorly researched media reports where predators allegedly meet their prey through online games, such fears are unfounded, and based purely on the ignorance and fear of the general public. Needless to say, it's very disheartening to hear such ignorant opinions from a member of law enforcement.

Couldn't the same be said about any activity enjoyed by children? I see no reason why adults can't appreciate good games like Beautiful Katamari, Noby Noby Boy or Ragnarok Online any more than children.

How long before we start seeing ESRB maximum age ratings on games in addition to the minimum age ratings now?

I've been called a pedophile because I was playing Zombie Panic Source!- the Half Life 2 mod on what turned out to be a children's server. What gives? It's a mature rated game, or at least it aught to be. I tell you, things are getting insane.

Is this for like comics of 4-year olds?

No. A manga is a comic book form of an anime, both of which are created for all ages. Unlike the American animators who usually target -10. I'd guess that out of 1,200 mangas with only three containing nudity it was designed for older teens like 15+ or 16+.

Still for him to plea guilty must mean he did have CP. If he pled not guilty the cops would have screwed themselves because legally that evidence can not be used against him.

I am surprised this guy pled guilty to the charges - the laws against drawn CP were struck down by the Supreme court awhile back (as the article said) which means he wasn't actually charged under that but rather under "obscene material" laws, which are extremely weak. Only a handful of people have ever been convicted under the law (I can only think of 2 in the past 50 years)

idk, those young fishies are making me uncomfortable. I wish we could see what this "obscene material" was so we could accurately judge the creepiness.

Probably not, I more generally meant the pics being released on some other site under evidence or whatever.

Even if the stuff he was looking at was the absolute worst CP has to offer, I still don't think he should have gotten jail time since the images were drawn.

I disagree, if its just nudity of drawn children then no objection; but there are definetely ways in which such content could be obscene to the point I would consider it legitamately bannable. If its something with a very good story line I would consider it art; but if we put blanket protection on drawn cp I can already sense someone drawing magazines of it to sell to pedophiles.

I can certainly see your side of it. It's creepy to think that anyone would want to look at that stuff. But the way I see it is, the brain of a pedophile is "wired" that way. They're not going to stop thinking about children in that way just because they can't legally get their hands on that type of pornography. I'd much rather have a pedophile get his jollies from a bunch of drawn images than the real thing.

Chances are, a true pedophile would eventually go for the real thing anyway, but until they actually do something to hurt another person, I don't see why they should be considered a criminal. If the authorities had the ability to read a persons mind, would it be going too far to arrest someone just for having unclean thoughts about a child? The drawn images are just thoughts put down on paper.

But what's the difference between drawn cp and movies/games of people stealing, killing, torturing, etc? Why does that line all of a sudden appear when we talk about cp, even though the media is completely fine with all the other obscene representations that you can think of?

Well it's obviously wrong and should be counted as a misunderstanding and miscommunication between the inner-government groups tbh.

It's kind of ridiculous. I'd rather have those who indulge in child pornography, indulge in animated or drawings of children being exploited (not that in any non-porn mangas that they ever do...most of the time...) than actually living it out in real life, with real people/children.

Wasn't there an article a few months back saying that criminal activity that can be relived through the internet has decreased because they get off on the internet content? I'd prefer that over them actually killing or raping someone.

I think it's because people feel more passionate about it, and rightly so. You're right though, we need to get rid of double standards and have a law which covers all types of mature content which is classified as such for any reason. As dizzle229 said, a victimless crime is not a crime.

There are always going to be moral issues with drawn CP, but it's not clear cut enough to justify a law.

In my opinion, he deserved it. It was obviously something F*&^%$@ nasty, otherwise they wouldn't give him such a sentence, and he knew it too, so he plead guilty. You guys are assuming it was over something stupid, I mean they found stuff on his computer as well. He's 40 years old, and he has over 1,200 manga volumes? He sounds like a F*&^%@# pedofile. Period.

Having manga doesn't make you a pedophile. It never said they found anything on his computer, just that they searched it.
