Supposedly it was partly because he couldnt afford his defense, but the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund was already serving as special consultant for the case and probably would have stepped up some fundraising efforts. Apparently Handleys lawyer also thought he wouldnt be able to convince a jury once they saw the images in question.

 

This is for everyone wondering why he pleaded guilty.

I don't know if you realise it or not, but mental institues give "labels" to people, which never come off. Once granted the ability to leave the institute you are regarded as; "in remission" rather than cured. So going to a mental institute in some ways IS worse than a prison sentence.
