Just something to be aware of

You can report players advertising a clan chat excessively if you wish. Atmosphere and the community trumps the rules.

What does excessively mean?

Also what do you mean by last line?

Spamming is a reportable offense. I don't think there's a number set in stone, so report at your discretion and with good judgment.

They annoy me too...

I'd report them for autotyping because most of the time they are autotyping.

Thanks for the new way to report (and get rid of) them.

Join the Clan Chat "adbusters" or something along those lines. There are almost always a couple of p-mods in there willing to come shut up the annoying people.

They can't mute unless the guys admit to autotyping and I don't think they can mute for the type of spam they are doing. But it is reportable and Jagex can own them with the ban hammer.

I asked my friends to come mute those guys once and they told me they can't without them admitting to autotyping and that kind of spam isn't serious enough for an insta mute.

When reporting these type of spam i just hope it don't backfire. Jagex can be stupid just as much as alot players you see in-game.

I've never seen or heard of anyone that got misuse of costumer support as an offence. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened but I imagine it's only given out if you spam costumer support with reports that have nothing to do with anything. The disruptive behavior rule is a very broad rule and a lot of things can fall under it so you'll be fine and I'm sure Jagex will know they are autotyping scum. If you report for macroing however you will have close to 0% chance of being punished even if they weren't. Jagex encourages people to report macroers if you suspect them of doing so, so they will get a lot of false macro reports.

But it is not considered spam as per the rules. If you wish to take action you may do so. Further action may be taken by Jagex staff at their discretion.

That's good description of price manipulators actions.
Price manipulators and macroers are very different.

I have heard from many people on this board that price manipulating clan chat leaders often cheat other users out of their money. How is that not scamming?

Also using autotyper is not exactly macroing, but i think i read using it is against the rules. If it's not i would like to see some proof.

Even so they are flooding the chat, which is against rules.

Nothing is being done directly to cheat people out of their money. Rather, a price manipulator advises people what to buy and sell. It is up to these users to use their knowledge, provided both in-game and on the Grand Exchange, to make a decision; it is not against the rules.

Autotyping is against the rules but it is not reportable unless a) they admit to using one or B) begin to type non-game related spam.

I shall quote again.

There are two types of spam, game related and non-game related. Game related spam consists of things like trade offers, adverts to join a clan chat channel or PvP spam. [...]ignore this type of spam, and if players are complaining, [it is advisable] that the ignore list is used.

Jagex is not stupid they know if someone is using an autotyper or not and those advertisers have been muted many a time for using one. They also tell the people to buy the item and at what price to buy it. They don't suggest it they tell it. It may be up to the users to make the buy but they lie to the players and give them false information that encourages a very bad buy. Lying to players and tricking them is scamming therefore it is against the rules.

@Sirhemen: Continue to report them as much as you like. It does not say in the KB you can't report for autotyping nor has a J mod said so. As Jagex says P mod are no more than their eyes and ears in game so what they say is not law unless they quote the KB.

[/hide]Once again, I shall reiterate. Autotyping is against the rules. You cannot report someone for autotyping under the circumstances you name because there is no evidence to back up your claim. You can report someone you think is autotyping under disruptive behavior. Price manipulation is not against the rules and, if you like, I can find multiple sources to back up this claim. Advertising a clan chat is not against the rules and doing so repeatedly is not against the rules. Spam is against the rules. The given picture does not break any rules as per the KB and multiple other sources. If a user believes that something is spam it falls under their discretion and the staff acting upon that.

Addressed to SirHemen,

Rules and laws governing a society evolve over time usually following recent events. Rules have little leeway. For instance, they do not take into consideration multiple variables that a person may.

Now there is this very nice feature to Runescape called an ignore list. While I personally have never used it, it is possible for anyone to use it to get away from spam. I understand that people don't really want to go through the trouble of right clicking a name in the text box and putting them on ignore because it is so much easier to report...

I agree with laura0077 with all that she's said and I recommend following by those standards.

Spamming/flooding the chat window is to fill the chat window with unnecessary text. This is an offence and is disruptive and unfair on other players, as it makes it more difficult for them to communicate and trade with each other.

As a pmod, I can tell you that this is NOT against the rules. Jagex has repeatedly said that this is not regarded as spam. This is game related spam, and therefore is within the rules. The bad spam is the "@@@@@@@@@@@@@@" type.

Do NOT report them, unless you believe they are using an auto typer.

Actually, this can be reported under Offensive language (I don't know if this is still what it's called in the new report window since I always play in french and that I'm used to the french report window), if it really is disrupting the chat. That is even if this is game related spam.

You should try to talk to the person first though, and if they don't respond, and that it's almost every line that they spam and they did it for at least like 15 lines, then report and use the ignore list.

You cannot report them for macroing if they don't admit to using a macro or autotyper.

Your telling me about ignore list when i do use it. Don't see how your helping. Spam will not always be there because we can simply choose to go away from the area/place/spot the spammers are at.

But when we go there (G.E) then we are spammed. Even if you add them to ignore list:

1) They might use a other account

2) They make the clan chat/private chat messages disappear faster

3) Why should public chat be used to spam advertise for something that ruins the game.

And yes i agree with Laura.

As a player mod you are here to help enforce Jagex's rules, which are posted for everyone to read and make a decision about. Under Respect there is a section "Spamming, or disruptive behaviour". Article 6 of that section states:

6. What is flooding the chat window?

Spamming/flooding the chat window is to fill the chat window with unnecessary text. This is an offence and is disruptive and unfair on other players, as it makes it more difficult for them to communicate and trade with each other.

That falls under that criteria because they are spamming the window more time then necessary(which it's not necessary at all), causing people to not be able to communicate with others or click the trade. As a player mod please do the community a favor and enforce the rules that are given because until Jagex says otherwise(and I don't mean in your mod forum where a select few can see it) they fall under the rules. Until Jagex openly states I can not report them I will continue to do so and I urge others to continue to do so whether or not someone with a silver crown says otherwise.

Yes you all priase the ignore list but there is only 100 spaces and as Sirhemen stated if your in the GE window and have the text split to friends or something the text still goes by very fast as if they were there and not on your ignore. It may not be "spam" per say but many people see it as that and can report it if they are disturb or their game play is hindered. Not to mention they advertise clans which lie to you for their own personal gain.

5. What does 'item scam' mean?

To 'item scam' means to cheat another player during a trade. Lying to other players for your own personal gain is not in the spirit of our games and will not be tolerated.

Yes it's 100% your choice whether or not to buy the item but when your told you can make millions a day with a small investment (which is a lie), someone is bound to be fooled especially if they are low level trying for that glorious godsword.

Not to mention they most likely run the bots or tell others to run the bots for ranks in their clan chat. This could fall under Encouraging others to break the rules which they may not do ingame but maybe on an IRC channel or something.

It does no good to keep banning mule accounts when the leaders run the entire show. Is it not right to also ban the leader of the operation?

thats two seperate issues;

using auto-typers has been a problem forever, personally back before the GE I did use an auto-typer to buy large quantities of ores, but I always kept the refresh rate down and had to turn it off to trade window.

Yes a few times people did ask me to stfu and I generally did (or moved worlds)

Scamming in its latest guise as 'the merchant clan scam' is simply a reaction to the scatter-gun banhammer wielded by Jagex.
