Christmas Loot!

Instead of having multiple topics for every different holiday this season we'd like to ask everyone to post in this thread. Feel free to discuss any upcoming holiday whether it be Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Pancha Ganapati, or even Festivus here.

Thanks. :)

So what's everybody celebrating this month?

Well, since I JUST posted this in the Hanukkah thread before it got locked, I'll re-post my reply here.

Christmas is for anyone who believes in Commercialism, and barbarianism.

I know some Jews, they hate Hanukkah, apparently they get lame presents, so they wish they celebrated Christmas.

Then they aren't really Jewish. Simple as that. Cause I don't know 1 person from Israel who would rather celebrate Christmas (which has absolutely no historic value) then Hanukkah.

Hanukkah is such a nominal holiday even in an orthodox prospective; it is simply celebrated so widely and outwardly due to its timing around Christmas.

Even if someone didn't celebrate any Jewish holidays, or practice the belief of Judaism at all, they could still consider themselves Jewish. The word isn't confined to the realm of religion at all anyways, it can also imply a culture, lifestyle, and, in some circles, race.

Also, you seem to think that Israel is comprised only of Jews, which is totally not true. The Christian percentage in Israel is larger than the Jewish percentage here in the US, and about 1/5th of the population is Arabic.

My advice is to either accept the holiday for the modern consumerist ritual that it has become, or learn more about Judaism before you start telling people they aren't as real as you.

I'm going to be going home for a few weeks this holiday season, as I had not gone home last time we had a break (boarding school). While I am born Jewish I have never felt that the true essence of our region is the sacrificial [cabbage] and all that, more so the lessons taught and learned. So yes, I will be celebrating this holiday in one respect with my family, but I will not be thinking of the Maccabees or anything of the sort, just the moral of the tale. The holiday season is a wonderful time and I urge everyone to enjoy it regardless of their born religion.

Happy Holidays to you, too! :P

You guys are way too cynical. So what if most winter holidays have been corrupted into the corporate hand that feeds the mass consumers? It's still fun to celebrate isn't it?

I'll be spending my Chanukah (which can't properly be spelled in english no matter how hard you try) with my grandparents. And I'm gonna have fun. I'll reread the Macabees story for the billionth time. Rejoice over the adundance in oil, or lack there of. And then spin a dreidel or two. Gelt is the [cabbage].

Just pointing out, he never said everyone from isreal, just the ones he knows.

I'll probally be around the house, and go skiiing if snow ever wants to fall. I love the snow, it makes for amazing picture taking during the winter.

Oh, I'll be celebrating Christmas.

This month, I'll only be celebrating Christmas. Though, I don't really like winter in general. Summer holidays FTW! :D

Btw, Gandorf, instead of locking those other threads, why don't you merge them here? Just a piece of advice.

I have to work, fml for being a chef.

Wow, that sucks? Who wants to go out on christmas anyway? (Not including those who don't celebrate obviously).

Won't do much for Christmas, just stay home with my immediate family, all my extended lives too far away. Might do something with my girlfriend as well at some point.

Well I just learned that Best Buy did this for Eid: http://www.quickpwn.com/2009/11/best-buy-eid-al-adha-ad-causes-disappointment-to-many-a0224.html.

I was about to get very upset since they'd otherwise use "happy holidays" to avoid offending anyone, but then I read the note on the bottom of that forum from a community supervisor and was relieved. I think its about time a company started wishing holidays individually, rather than "happy holidays" as a whole. Good job Best buy, as long as you remember to include all the other holidays, you have my support.

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

I enjoy Christmas because of my family and the time off, I could care less about the gifts.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

I'll be celebrating Christmas. We don't celebrate it for any religious reasons though.

My mom e-mailed me a (really crappy quality) picture of our Christmas tree! I was home when we picked it out but was unable to help with the decorating as I had to return to uni :(

My cat loves to sleep under our Christmas tree.

Fake Christmas tree's all the way.

As much as I LOVE real Christmas trees, when considering *price*, I'm going to have to side with you. It's absolutely RIDICULOUS what my parents are willing to pay for a Christmas tree.

Real Christmas trees are the best. They smell so good!

I know, I love walking into the house and thinking "It smells like Christmas!!"

$25 isn't a high price, how much does a fake tree cost?

A fake tree costs about $50-100 for a medium-sized tree, and it can cost upwards of a few hundred dollars for a large tree. That's not including the cost of Christmas lights or ornaments.

---

I'm not a religious person, so I don't observe any religious aspects of Christmas. My family is Protestant (Baptists, Anglicans, etc), so the rest of my family might observe some religious aspects. Generally, we just do the commercialised version of Christmas. HOWEVER, I enjoy the Christmas holiday because I visit family members that I haven't seen in a year, and I love the time off.

I guess over time they would be cheaper. Probably can't get 16 foot tall fake trees though  .

By medium-sized, I'm talking about something like 7-10 feet high, which is average. Depending on where you're shopping, average-sized faux trees can cost $100-200. That's depending on the store and the tree's quality, though.
