das
Anyone else see this? One of my favorite films in the past year and certainly one of the most powerful Cant believe no one has made a thread on it yet. o.o Did anyone else love it? Me and my crew went and we swear it's brilliant. "Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world."Abraham Lincoln
Flyingjj
I saw it the other day and it was pretty good. A little excessively violent for my taste, but then again I tend to be quite the pacifist. I liked the religous messages present, though I think that many none religious people would see them in a very negative light.
das
i didn't really find the film violent - I guess i've seen enough slashers/gorefests to see it as tasteful violence - to be fair - LOTR/Braveheart had the same levels of gore in my mind.... I do fear this is going to turn into a religious thread - but it was not your typical religious movie and it should be seen for moe than that "Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. stevepole
I haven't seen it but I'm really hoping I have a chance to see it soon. It looks really good and I really want to know what the importance of the book is.
Lemeja
I watched it, loved it, then read the very negative reviews. Shows how much you should trust those. The movie was great.

Lotr lobbed quite a few orc's heads at helms deep, rohan battle etc. The violence in eli really was mild and it really to me sold parts of the story - tastefully done (no pointless gore, and blood was rather minimal) and the first fight scene was done masterfully with beautiful cinematic angles. i_love_burritos
You have a 'crew'? Do they give you a footmassage during the movie or something? Yo' dawg, fo' shizzle. Oh, Das, I believe the proper grammar is : My crew and I, or my crew and myself. Just looked it up, never heard of it up untill now. Sounds good, has some good actors too. Will make a point of seeing it when it comes out here. [Australia]
Diesel
I saw it last night and thought it was really good. The religious symbolism was present, but it wasn't so over the top that it became solely a religious movie. Having just gone through a class called "The Gospel According to Pop Culture", I can see this as being a movie that we would watch in that class. Eli being the Christ figure. As for the violence, I think it added to the movie far more than it took away. Like Das said, the angles of the first fight scene were great. Nom
Saw it with Diesel. Didn't think it was terrible, but the first half is way more compelling than the second. It just ended up degenerating into all these ridiculous reveals and started progressing super fast compared to the leisurely pace at the beginning. The religious symbolism was VERY over-the-top, and half of it doesn't really make much sense. Like the way a certain person died. You can tell they're getting at something, but there's not a solid enough connection for it to have any real impact. The first fight was indeed beautiful though. Intriguing
Haven't even heard about it until now. I tend to get somewhat irritated at religious symbolism in media, so I expect I'll be wishing that wasn't a part of it. It looks quite decent though, so I'll probably watch it in the coming week. Plus, my Fallout 3 character was black as well (totally relevant). Cool.

Zibl
kinda getting sick of denzel films... Wtf. I love Denzel films. Granted there have been a couple that weren't as good, but a movie where Denzel is playing a badass? Love them. On topic: Movie was great in my opinion. Such a mind blow when you find out about everything (especially considering the things Eli does throughout the movie). I recommend it to anyone. Orpheus
I honestly want to go see this movie, but thanks Tennessee for your [wagon]-rape laws where you have to be 18 to see an R-rated movie. I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal. OPEN WIDE HERE COMES THE HELICOPTER.
Lenin64
You have a 'crew'? Do they give you a footmassage during the movie or something? When you're as big as Das, you need a pit crew to change out parts due to wear and tear. More on topic, is the religious symbolism something you have to have an in-depth knowledge of the bible and whatnot to understand? As in, it would go over the head of someone who doesn't know it all that well? Or is it something that most everyone with a general knowledge can see? Command the Murderous Chalices! [hide]In the time after the apocalypse, the lack of government/order caused total and utter chaos to break loose and reign. Crimes that would have been punished now go without so much as a second glance. The Church has been, since its inception, a source of moral stability for believers and in some cases (I'm tempted to say many), it was the basis for the set of laws that govern the country. The Bible in this case being the physical symbol of the law. (Whether you believe in a God or not, it's hard to question the impact that religions have had on the world as a whole) With all of the Bibles believed to be destroyed, there was no way for the same stability to be established again. This is where Eli comes in. His journey was to protect the last remaining chance at stability and order for the human race and bring it to a place where it could be used for good. So basically, the Bible is order. Eli brings order into the chaotic world. (Christ figure) The fact that he was blind is a symbol of his faith in his journey and in his God. (As well as a solution to the main plot conflict) The same can be said for most religious histories. Skull
My friends and I are looking into seeing it after finals, I'm kind of mad that I watched a review of it before hand since I wasn't expecting to see it, but all that really got spoiled for me was what the Book of Eli was and a bit of the plot. LegendaryStu
To me i was expecting Fallout: The movie, it lived up to that in parts. Others i found ok. I think the plotline overall had majoosive flaws in it or they just didn't explain other things at all. (not mentioning spoilers) Wasn't terrible however.
