Hardrock/Heavy metal

Hi.

So i'm sitting here, listening to Pink Floyd, playing RS and being a bit bored. I began thinking, why do i still need to get my heavy metal hunger satisfied by Maiden, Purple, Sabbath, Saxon etc? I mean, i love those old bands but i wouldn't mind some new folks also to come along. I mean, the only band i can think of instantly is Dawn Of Silence.

But why is it that there's a crapload of black&death metal bands around but almost no heavy metal bands? One thing would be that "it's been done already". But if that is true, then there'd be no new music at all.

People still like hardrock/heavy metal, so there should be some new bands out there. Or are muscians only intrested in growling or do all just suck at singing clean?

Or perhaps, it's that i've missed a [cabbage]load of bands? Tell me of any you could recommend and also if you want, your point of view on this.

You'll have a hard time finding any rock band later then the 80's which has that "rock" feel to it.

Only band I've heard which feels 80's was Steel Panther, but their more of lets play 80's rock and throw in a load of swears and jokes.

I'm going to watch this thread as I too would love to find a hidden modern "80's rock" band.

I was thinking of them too, but then thought they were too much of a parody to really say.

I think it is just the era and how things progress. Music does not sound the same as time progress'.

Thats because you like what I call "classic" metal. It's so old it's been pretty much immortalized. No bands dare cross that territory, because lets face it - it wouldn't be the same. Well...or too much the same, which would lead to boring and redundant bands which no one likes. There's still good metal aroun, but we'll never be able to live the classic beginings without the originals. In the mean time, feel free to find new bands covering those old favorites. I prefer:

Bullet For My Valentine: Creeping Death [Metallica]

Bullet For My Valentine: Domination [Pantera]

Avenged Sevenfold: Walk [Pantera]

Avenged Sevenfold: Flash of the Blade [iron Maiden]

Van Canto: Fear of the Dark [iron Maiden]

Apocolyptica: [had a whole album called "Metallica on strings"]

Disturbed: Land of Confusion [Genesis]

and so on. The old rock/metal spirit lives on. Just not in the old bands. Motorhead's singer has done a lot of side projects, some of which include Dave Grohl. Orgasms ensue.

Enjoy living the past vicariously

OP, did you just NOT mention Judas Priest?? I know they are a little 'heavier' than just heavy metal, but if you haven't heard them you're missing on a big one there.

I hope you just forgot to list them <_<

All the bands you just mentioned still makes music (except Pink Floyd). Heavy metal is not as much dead as it has simply branched off into different subgenres. Try some stoner rock if you like early Sabbath, like Spiritual Beggars (early) and Grand Magus. If you like old classic rock, try Glyder, very Thin Lizzy-inspired. Corrosion of Conformity, Karma To Burn, Black Label Society?

I don't know, I don't listen to metal anymore.

If you like Master of Reality by Black Sabbath, check out Electric Wizard and to a lesser extent, Church of Misery. A lot of this 'stoner doom' is garbage and almost an insult to doom metal, but those two bands really stood out to me amongst the slew of copycats.

Hell, if you like Black Sabbath in general, you need to check out Reverend Bizarre, Candlemass, Warning and Lord Vicar.

I don't really listen to 'pure' heavy metal at all; I find it pretty bland and uninspiring. However, when you slow it down... it becomes a whole new level of awesome.

Yeah it really sucks, no one makes good metal anymore. Maiden is still good enough for me though :)

Don't generalise metal, brilliant music is still being made, music has simply progressed.

Progressed to inaudible grunting and as much distortion as possible. Show me some metal I can understand and then I'll agree with you.

I actually mean it - I'd love to hear some newer metal that isn't just grunting.

Hm yes Wolfmother and Grand Magus, been meaning to check them out but haven't yet.

Heard basically everything else that's been mentioned heh.

Napalm Death: I didn't mention them because i don't listen to them.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

Ever heard of power, symphonic or progressive metal?

Also the more obvious ones like all the old bands that are still releasing music.

And this, apparently metal enough to get on metal archives.

Heh. Yeah.

I have never understood the reason why people are so adverse to harsh vocals being used in metal. Here's a hint for you: if you've only ever heard bands that are most likely featured in Kerrang, you don't qualify for an opinion on growls. Even Metal Hammer has a better opinion on what constitutes to a metal band than Kerrang, and we all know how bad metal magazines are. I'm not really pointing the finger at anyone here, but if you've only heard Cannibal Corpse, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for My Valentine and Atreyu, of course you are going to hate harsh vocals. They aren't exactly exemplary examples of how harsh vocals should be used in heavier music.

Here are some examples of what I believe to be great uses of harsh vocals in metal:

I don't mean to come off sounding like an elitist f***wit (I'm not) but it grinds my gears when people listen to metal and hate on harsh vocals.

I'm hitting myself for not including these guys in my first post. They are a god send that lack the respect they deserve:

I used to 'just don't like' harsh vocals too but you can really grow to like it, which is pretty awesome since it opens up a huge array of pretty good (understatement) metal bands you can listen too while you previously couldn't.
