Would you still play if runescape was Class Based?

Featured Replies

The only topic I've seen close to this is the discussion of "the triangle," although I've been inactive, so if theres something similar (sorry).

Basically, when runescape was first created there was different classes you could chose from, depending on your preferance.

Then they scaped this idea, and made it possible to play multiple classes at once; ranger, mage, melee.

So my question is, if they made runescape class based (you'd have to chose if you played as melee, mage, or ranger ONLY) would you still play?

My opinion;

Runescape would be better off it was classed based.

My reasons are;

It would help fix the combat triangle problem that jagex is having at the moment. The reason why it would fix it, as it would limit what each class could do. For example melee's wouldn't be able to wear ranger armour, which would make it eaiser for mages to kill melees. They could also improve the level cap, as each class would have less skills to level. They could make class based quests. Each class would be unique and useful in different situations.

Also if it was class based, new classes could be introduced, instead of new skills. For example assasins (attack/strength/thieving), monks (defence/pray/magic), necros (summong/magic/defence).

My second discussion question;

Is runescape only successful as your not bound to one class?

If I won the lottery, and decided to blow it all building a MMORPG that was browser based, and had multiple classes, would it be just as successful?

IMO the combat triangle really only matters in PVP, and rock papers scissors isn't fun so I would say I would despise the games current PvP even more.

Hm, I actually think it would better pvp. At the moment pvp is all about who has the most cash. Theres very little skill involved.

No! One of my favorite things about RS is one account/character can do everything and isn't limited.

In your scenario, would classes be forever?

The whole charm of it is to not be bound by silly classes. The whole game would break if you'd suddenly get classes.

I've tried different mmorpgs, and they ALL had classes.. I couldn't find one that didn't. It's tried and true, but really limited and boring after a while. I just don't find enjoyment if i can only choose between melee, range and mage etc. and then specialize even further so that my options are even less. In runescape you can mix and match, There are no set rules. And everyone has the same opportunity in the game, making it easy to involve the players in a better way through quests and lore, unlike what you can do with class-based worlds. They have limitations all over the place. They tend to be unpersonal, when the free choice is not present.

Although, i would fancy making a set bonus armour for each, that cripples your ability to hybrid. It could make an incentive to be a pure meleer. On second thought, people would just use lesser armour and hypbrid anyway...

Yup, it would be pointless if you could change class when you please.

not a bad idea, but if the armour was cheap, more people would use it.

It wouldn't be Runescape if it was like that. You're supposed to be free to make your own tactics and setups. It makes the game far more difficult to balance, but it makes it much more satisfying to play. So no, Runescape wouldn't be quite as successful if it was class based.

I'm not sure it being difficult to balance is such a good thing really. Mage is way off being anywhere to contend with the other two classes if were talking in terms of the triangle (which is mostly why I made this thread).

I think classes would balance the triangle once and for all ;/

No, I wouldn't. One of the main reasons I play RuneScape and not WoW or other MMO's is because of their arbitrarily restrictive class systems. Realy, what would stop me from being an archer AND a fighter in real life? Nothing, so why the hell should MMO's have such stupid restrictions?

If you're going to have classes in a game at all, I would want it to be like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion where classes are merely a starting point. In that game your main talents simply start at a higher level and train faster than the other talents. But you're not restricted from training the others at all, it just takes longer.

I couldn't agree more.

Same. I dislike MMORPG's where you are set into a specific set of skills. That's probably most of them..

Na. Don't think I would. The best thing about this game, imo, is the fact that you can do anything you want without having to worry about all those little issues that arise with character classes.

The challenge of a mistake is not to avoid it. The challenge of a mistake is dealing with the outcome.

Proud of who I am and what I am.

This is kind of the worse idea I've ever seen in this forum (That was a serious proposal).

No offense, but if I had to pick 1 class, I'd hate losing all the xp I have in range and mage.

+Everyone would choose mellee, as it is the chapest and most useful for slaying etc or range, as it's great for boss hunting.

Seriously, the fun about RS is that you can mellee, let's say....Bloodvelds, and still range aviansies minutes later, only to get maging in PVP minutes later.

Also. THE GAME DOESN'T REVOLVE AROUND PVP!!!!!

My wildguessing (not an actually precise number, just a made up percentage, so don't tell me 67% of stats are made up 84% of the time....) would be that a good 80% of people don't care that much about pking. So why limit everyone so that PVPers can get teir shiny combat triangle back. This game (and only the fighting part of it!) is all about getting the best attack style with the best armor for a designated use.

It would be a great no-no from me.

However, I wouldn't be opposed to it being like back in the time when you would choose a class while begginning and they would give you some stuff according to what you choose. But still letting you train your own way.

No skill would save a meleer from a mage, a mage from a archer and a archer from a meleer. Just trust me on that systems like these do not favor skill, I have been there and done that when games went down that path.

No. The best thing I love about this game is that I'm not limited. I've played other MMOs and each of them has been class-based... now I've played this, I honestly couldn't go back to them. :/ Easier to get bored.

Little known fact: Runescape was semi-class based at one point. You could choose adventurer, magician, ranger or warrior and you would start out with different starting materials. Adventurer had a bunch of skill based items, warrior had melee gear etc.

Zaataar.png

If it was class based id probably stop playing. What i like about RS is the fact that my character is free to do whatever i want them to do. They aren't restricted by the fact they aren't the right class to accomplish something.

Not that I even play much anymore, but I would definitely quit if it was =/

Come to #tip-it on Swift IRC, if you're cool

That would make it so much harder, it's not even funny.

TzHaar fight caves would be almost impossible if you had to melee the higher levels. Aren't Jad and the Ket-zek very hard to melee?

Kree'Arra and his cronies would be impossible.

Armadyl Godsword would go to 150-200 million in days of the release of classes.

If you jump into a river in Paris, you're insane. If you jump into a river in Egypt, you're in denial.

Hm, I hadn't thought of that. Certain quest bosses and bosses in general would be horribly ruined.

I still always like the idea of some sort of class distinction. Not necessarily classes you get restricted on, but at least like Elder Scrolls like somebody above me said.

But for classes like WoW and such, I prefer not in RuneScape. As said a million times before, it sets RS apart from the others.

I'd stop playing, I've never liked the idea of being limited to certain areas of the game

So basically nobody could veng anymore? Since lunar book is otherwise useless for combat.

I'd probably still play but it would be like how I still played after the wildy update. AKA I would still play but I'd think it's a terrible update.

Well, they'd have to create special skills for each class, so melee might have some similar to veng.

And about the quest bosses, etc... obviously they would change them so they weren't impossible.

With different classes, you could have instances, and each class would be useful in its own way, etc, etc.

Also if anything God sword prices would drop.
