Video of a SUV driver being hit with a taser gun

Featured Replies

The video is awful, but not graphic. Her screams and convulsions are frightening, but there is no blood or anything. I think it is important for people to see this, since this is "real life", rather than scripted T.V. drama.

A YOUNG woman screams in pain and falls from the open door of her SUV onto the tarmac. Seconds earlier, a Florida traffic cop had fired his Taser stun gun at her, delivering a 50,000-volt shock and leaving her convulsing in agony on the roadside.

Her crime? After being pulled over for speeding, she had insisted on making a cellphone call instead of getting out of the car when told to do so.

Video footage of this event shocked many delegates at Jane's Less-Lethal Weapons Conference in Leeds, UK, last month. But the footage soon got even worse. A minute later, with the 22-year-old still stunned on the tarmac, the officer orders her to lie on her stomach and put her hands behind her back. She can't do so, and says so. His response is to pull the trigger and send another 50,000-volt shock into the Taser darts still lodged in her arm.

I discussed this with Wyrm, and he wondered why the cops don't have settings on their tazers that will administer smaller shocks, for situations like this where the rich female SUV driver wasn't likely to be a threat.

This is quite an old clip and has caused great controversy. I think that in this case the officer was badly trained in the use of the tazer.

However, I would rather see tazers being used than a real gun in an emergency situation

Sheesh, I know SUVs are the scum of the earth now but even that's taking it a bit too far.

I'm inclined to agree with Matt and point out that this is just one big, untrained idiot out of a bunch of idiots.

OK, I phrased that wrong...what I meant was one slightly under-qualified gentlemen, an anomoly in our highly trained police force.

I'm sorry, but this has been discussed on another forum of people who shared the exact same views as me. That [bleep] deserved every second of it.

The policeman told her to get off the phone and get out of the car. She said no and she was going to make a call. He tells her to get out again and she once again says no and then makes the call. She is sitting their talking on the phone saying the cop is going to arrest her. *Ding* She's resisting arrest then. He warns her multiple times to get out or he's going to tase her. Does she? No.

Is she really a threat? No, but she wouldn't cooperate and was resisting arrest. What kind of people usually don't get out of their car when pulled over? The people who have something to hide. A taser may have been drastic, but the cop is hardly at fault here.

The reason that the news was on New Scientist was because after an investigation the officer's bosses have decided that his actions were "an appropriate way to apprehend someone non-violently resisting arrest, as she may have had a concealed weapon in the car". So, it's apparently not the case that the officer was "badly trained", since his bosses are backing him up on it. I don't know about you guys, but I worry that pretty much anyone can have a concealed weapon in any situation, unless they're walking around completely naked, and that means that most people are "fair game".

What about when she was on the ground and he zapped her the second time? She was screaming and crying and obviously defenceless, it was completely unnecessary.

Ah, my ignorance is bliss to this subject. I hadn't heard/read of that interpretation before, Ryan.

Wouldn't you agree, though, that surely a bit of common sense is needed? Resisting arrest she may have been, but going to threaten or start a get-away (especially in a SUV) I doubt.

First time I've seen or heard of this clip.

Sure I think the tazer was a very harsh way to deal with the situation in the first place and the 2nd one where she is on the ground was just worse.

But I can't believe the woman was told quite a few times to get out of the car and she didn't do it. Any sensible person will listen to a police officer if they don't want any trouble.

In my view both sides are at fault. (certainly when she refuses to cooperate and the 2nd tazering.)

Dont you think thats true in everyway? Why use a taser on a 22 yr old woman? There was absolutly no need to bring that out, he could have used a baton or pepper spray. The tazer was far too dangerous to use on such a minor offence.

She was going against the law....She was a huge idiot....You can't say "no" to the law and expect nothing to happen. I am glad he did it and I think he was perfectly justified. We need more cops like that.

See if she ever does it again....

I think tasers should never be used unless there is a immanent threat to the police officer or that a very serious crime might be commited. Why? Because tasers have already been deemed to be unsafe in the fact that they have already caused a few deaths on those that it has been used upon. Also, cops dont realise how powerful of a weapon it really is. I know that when my dad used to be a security officer he had to take a test before he was allowed to carry pepper spray. What they did was throw tons of canisters of the spray onto a football field and he had to crawl from one side to the other side. Because he went through this, he wasn't about to use it on just any guy since he knew how powerful the stuff was.

No im not saying that all police officers should be tasered before they can use one. All im saying that they must have some education on the subject (or something of the sorts) before they are to be allowed to use it. I've already read 3 story's in the past where 7 and 8 year old kids have been tasered. Why? Well in one of the story's a 8 year old girl decided she didn't want to go to school and instead started walking back home. When the police officer spotted her and began to walk towards her she started running. So instead of easily out running her he decided to shoot her with 50,000 volts of electricity. wow, what a smartie.

Any kid shot by a taser is lucky to be alive. And the cop who did it is lucky to have gotten off at all.

Maybe it was a mistake by the cop to use the tazer so much on her, but that was a possibility even if she thought the cop wasn't allowed to do it. Had she done what she was asked to do her chances of getting hurt like that go down close to 0%. Better be safe than sorry since something may not be as safe as it sounds (disobeying a cop).

Its good to see that the police aren't just using uneccessary force on young poor black men... they've moved up to rich black females! Good for them!

Lol what a complete idiot, he could have used his baton or the pepper spray at the most. What's an unarmed 22 year old woman gonna do to him?

How do we know she's unarmed

~the multiple people who replied to me, yes a tazer was a little extreme and honestly I didn't watch her get zapped the second time. There was no need for a second zapping considering the state she was in after the first time. The cop would be at fault for that and possible misuse of the tazer see as he had other alternatives BUT I feel some type of force was necessary. Should it have been a tazer? Who knows.

Yeah he knew she was unarmed...no....

Disobeying the law directly to a cop....hmm what is that going to get you?

On the interent....a permanent ban....in RL....a tazer

Ghost: I am prejudice towards ignorance, so that would explain why I appear to be so.

She was being defiant, and the cop was doing his job by backing up his requests. However the taser was a bit excessive.

He could have done like a bunch more before jumping to that. Normally tasers are reserved for unarmed people who are running from a situation, because it can hit them from a short distance and take them down without fatally injuring them. I don't think the woman was running, or even threatening to.

Oh yeah, ever heard of police brutality? I'd hate to say that racism would even be an issue in our day and time, but they shouldn't rule it out as a reason for the excessive force.

An officer has to be in control of the situation at all times or there is a huge risk to his safety. She was resisting his commands, in a belligerent manner no less, and deserved what she got.

Better the taser than his nightstick

I know the price. I pay it gladly.

Joy! I wonder when they shall move up to white people.

*polishes my camera, all ready for the moment*

The woman is an absolute fool, officer was perfectly justified imho to tazer her the first time, she could've had a gun under her seat, and the phone was a decoy or maybe she was planning to take off again. Approaching someone in a car the officer ahs no idea what's inside the car and he's completely in the open. He already knows that the person has commited one crime (speeding, ) maybe they were running from a robbery or some other crime. Disobeying a direct order given by a police officer is a crime.

The second time was a little more difficult to see. At the end they're discussing if the woman took a swing at his partner. Just because she's moaning doesn't mean she doesn't have full control of her limbs by that time, so maybe she was trying to lash out at the officer(s,) we can't see it's too small and shadowy. It probably wasn't justified but yeah, don't quite know.

The cop did warn her about 5 times.. :? so she should've listened to the law.

That wasn't the whole video there's 5 minutes before that where she refuses to do what he says and is abusive to him.

Regardless of the excessive use of the taser, when a police officer tells you to do something - you do it. Only an idiot wouldn't listen to a cop in that situation, if she wasn't such a fool she would have avoided the whole ugly mess that came as a result of her actions.

And to the people giving the whole "they don't arrest white people" crap, what kind of dream world are you living in? Yes, the woman in the video is black, but that doesn't give you an excuse to play the race card - but what would i know, i'm a white guy who has no dealings with the law!

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

That was a pretty horrible experience to hear. The use of the taser is a bit harsh if you ask me.
