das
Yo homies, hows it going down in the hizzle tonight? What didn't understand my gangster colloquialisms? I'm a white male from the south in the USA. I grew up listening to Rap, forsaking my forced country roots, although i'm a bit of a mixed bag music wise currently, I consider rock and rap both music. I myself consider myself an amateur songwriter, and an amateur rapper , I even have a song on youtube. Rap, Rock, Country and even jazz are expressions of yourself and are just artforms - to say that this thread has generated some ignorant stereotypes about rap covers the topic fairly well, as people seem more riled upover what is played in a CD player than religion, politics and issues that actually having a bearing on our lifes. Now before i'm told that rap is mainly guns, drugs and misogynistic themes i would strongly implore you to explore the entire genre - from A tribe called Quest to Sage Francis, Atmosphere, Apathy, KRS ONE, Master Ace, Genus Pro, Parallel minds and other alternate rappers who don't get plays on the mainstream clearchannel playlists. - I've heard rap that deals with deep religious themes, breakups, divorces, dealing with grief and relationships and even politics. Heres a quote for your paper "Music is self expression, the only bad music is the kind of music that you cannot relate to - or connect with. No two people will ever have the same music tastes verbatim and in many ways music is a key to our personalities. Our tastes define us as a person on many levels." ~DasTip.it AdminstratorA Rapper who pens lyrics and spits rhymes who jams out from everything from Bach to Korn to DMX to Atmosphere to Coldplay to Willie Nelson "Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world."Abraham Lincoln
nine naked men
ilu Das. My situation is kinda similar to yours, minus the in the USA bit, and I'm younger, too. I live in a pretty country focussed town, and share a lot of your views on music. : P In addition, to anyone who thinks all rap is terrible based on what they've seen on TV/radio, you could check out some nerdcore rap, which is pretty much as far from the themes of mainstream 'gangsta' rap as you can get. Stuff like Beefy, Kabuto the Python, Dr. Awkward, Fatty. Pretty much video-game centric, and much more entertaining that most things on the radio. A lot more clever lyricisms, too. Though it will never stand up to the likes of Sage Francis or Aesop Rock, those guys are lyrical monsters. @Das - You have awesome taste in rap. :3 I haven't heard of Genus Pro in that list, I may have to check them/him out. Have joo heard of Cage or Buck 65? They're pretty awesome, too. sleep like dead men wake up like dead men
rangeor
There is only bad music in the subjective sense. Whoever legitimately claims any genre of music to literally be bad is a close-minded elitist that obviously doesn't know what music even is. Jernlov
People who say screaming and rapping take no skill have never tried to do either. There are [cabbage]ty screamers and [cabbage]ty rappers; it's all about how you command your voice and that alone requires a great deal of precision. By no means is it unskilful, though. Was someone hating on extratone? That stuff is awesome, but I think it is just me and a select niche of the Internet that enjoys it, ~ironically~ or not. Guest Mrmegakirby
Before anyone says rap isn't a form of music, try and write a rap song. Personal experience, it's not easy. Like Das said; music is a way to express yourself. Rap is just that - and, in certain cases, one of the best ways. Even though I dislike rap, those are my views. Lenticular_J
I cannot physically write poetry without it metamorphosing into a rap song in my head. I even get snare drums, T-Pain saying "Shawtayee," all that [cabbage]. Then I realize I'm wearing a gold chain and dranking purple drank and get oh so confused. Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah. Calm down, kiddies. Or something. There's plenty of good rap. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

foofoomagoo
Bad Music to me is Music without any true insightful message. See the band (DGAF), music about getting messed up and thinking your hard is a message yes but its not insightful or even well thought its literally just crap. Saru Inc
Then you're an idiotic bigot. :thumbsup:Awe its so cute, he thinks he's people. =D>Great use of English there kid.So I have different views on rap than you, how is that wrong. I don't treat it as music, but as garbage instead. Are you so insecure that everyone has to have the same opinion as you or else your ego collapses in on itself. Most likely I am older than you, but seeing as you had to go straight to the insults then I saw no reason to give an intelligent response. To be honest, this argument should have died a long time ago. There is no reason that It should have gone on this long. Oh and you better get used to people like me, because, out here, in the real world we're everywhere. Just let the argument die. No not at all, you just don't need to insult it.If you want to talk about rap and why you like it, go to the rap thread. I'm pretty sure there is one. Read the original post, he asked for opinions, I gave mine. I'm a metal head, I hear the "it isn't music" speech all the time from various people. It's called freedom of speech, I have as much right to my opinions as anyone else. And really, do you want a world where everyone likes the exact same things? This is my last response to your constant badgering. There's douchebaggery aloof. It's already been said, so I'm gonna say it again: Bad music can be bad on two levels: 1) technical skill 2) giving a mood, feelings, or insights. 1) this is very debatable topic, as many people believe that no one can ever play bad music (technical wise) and what i mean by that, is they literally have no skill playing an instrument and its obvious. 2) Depending on any type of music, if its bland, uninspiring, and really really cliché (not even the slightest thought involved in making it.) I have all the 99s, and have been playing since 2001. Omar
Complete reliance on computers as an instrument kinda stretches it.Disagree!Any of Justice's tracks will show you using a software doesn't mean your music will lack complexity. They're all sequenced (give the computer the score and with which synths to play it with, and it plays it for you). Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. How2PK
I think bad music is music that pretends to be something it isn't. It doesn't really matter if you make German Schlagers, Bubblegum Pop, Gangster Rap, Rock 'n Roll or Free Jazz. As long as you're honest about it and you're making the music with good intentions, it's all good. Sometimes it is a little tricky to decide when this isn't the case, of course. But that's a nice challenge. Just follow your gut and everything will be allright. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore! fastortoise
For a guy who actually listens to song lyrics and appreciates them, its mostly about that. That's why I really enjoy some rappers (MF Doom, Del, Cunnin Lynguists, RZA.. I can go on) because they're lyrics are really creative. I am also put off when music is too influenced by the society the artist is living in. I mean sure, even science is influenced by society, but there's a spectrum of influence and some people just let their music be abused: WAKE UP IN THE MORNIN FEELIN LIKE P-DIDDY I mean really? Sister Nicci
Bad music is subject to interpretation, as it's all a matter of personal preference; what one thinks is good music, another thinks is pure drivel. fuer grissa ost drauka "Once committed to fight, cut. Everything else is secondary, cut. That is your duty, your purpose, your hunger. There is no rule more important, no committment that overrides that one. Cut. Cut from the void, not from bewilderment. Cut the enemy as quickly and directly as possible. Cut with certainty. Cut decisively, resolutely. Cut into his strength. Flow through the gaps in his guard. Cut him. Cut him down utterly. Don't allow him a breath. Cut him without mercy to the depths of his spirit. It is the balance of life: death. It is the dance with death." "Dance with me, Death." Guest Mrmegakirby
What makes a song good is not the artist, but the song writer. If your favorite band performed a song you disliked, you wouldn't like the song, even though you may like the artist. (Unless they rewrote or modified the song). The songwriter is probally one of the most underappreciated, but one of the most important people when making a song. Songs are easy to write. Good songs are hard to write. Alg
Sometimes a band approaches the apocalypse in an unoriginal way though. You're bound to have the guys that go "[bleep] yeah METAL! Let's go sing about the end of the world!" and come up with cliched crap that isn't satisfying to listen to. I think that would be an indicator of bad music though. Bands/artists that stick to a formula that others have used without being creative about it. Not just limited to lyrics, of course...
