Music to my ears!

Vyleo

Recommended Posts

Scape original is my favourite.

New Melodie and Autumn Village, most memorable ones for me since my newbie days.

I like peaceful music for the most part, very relaxing, Wcing, fishing.

I used to change music to Mime music when I go to wildly in the old days, the wildy music is just to suspenseful for me

Honestly sometimes I listen for those track too long, they become BGM during my dreams.

When I am combat or range, that's a different story, I would turn off RS music, and switch to Techno Trance (or if I am compete with other players, Halo Combat Evolved), lol.

a happy Runescaper

What? You guys actually listen to that music? I don't listen to any of it ...

I find it quite weird that people hate it so much. NOW GRANTED it's not amazing music, but still yet there are so catchy tunes in there. People just have to be more opened minded about it I believe.

Second Vision has the best composition in the game in my opinion. The sound sucks, as usual, but gotta give the composer credit.

Rant:

Two things would deter the average music lover: Crappy composition and lousy sound quality, and unfortunately, Runescape has an abundance of both.

That's the first problem - way too many tracks. Do we really need 638 tracks for a game area that small? No. We don't. Half of that is too much. Know what? A 6th of it is too much. Why not make a dozen high quality 10-or-so-minutes ambient tracks for each area in the game (desert, Morytania, Tirannwn, etc)? Music has an immense impact on gameplay. Take The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion for example - stuff some sound isolating earphones into your ears and the effect's simply mesmerizing.

It must suck quite a lot working in the music department over there. I've seen that iCould video of the music guy over there, saying that it's what he's been doing all his life, and now he's working at it. I know a few people like him, and he must feel awful having these constraints on his work. I checked the game cache a few days ago - comparing the sizes before and after clicking on an unheard track, and the difference ended up being 3.5KB. Assuming 5KB's the average, that's about 3MB of music for the whole game.

You could go as usual and say that what really matters is gameplay, but the graphics and sounds are what makes you immerse into the game. Big mistake if you ask me. You got a full screen mode, and all that's missing is some good tunes to totally swim in it.

Anyways, I could go for hour about it (I'd love to even, especially if someone from Jagex is looking at this), but that's for another time or thread.

Its not the song composition that put me off to RS music, but the quality of the audio. You can take a good song and make it dreadful to listen to with bad quality.

Thats what RS music is like. Although its a good song, and isn't bad to listen to once or twice, Its not something you want to listen to often.

No offence, but you need to get your ears checked if you think "RS music is like that".

In 2005, it was like that. Now? It hasnt been like that in a long time.

That doesnt sound like "your" rs music at all. <_<

The example I gave is an exaggeration, but I do feel that the quality of the RS sound isn't very good and takes a lot away from what would otherwise be good music. Runescape is a game a lot of people play for hours at a time and after a while you can start to hear the bad quality audio. IDK, maybe its just me.

Some 30 Seconds to mars,

I listen to the music while doing a new quest/minigame and the sound effects while afk skilling. Thats about it.

DK drops (solo/LS): 66 hatchets, 14 archer rings, 13 berserker rings, 17 warrior rings, 12 seerculls, 13 mud staves, 7 seers rings

QBD drops: 1 kite, 2 visages, 4 dragonbone kits, 3 effigies, lots of crossbow parts

CR vs. CLS threads always turn into discussions about penis size.
...
It's not called a Compensation Longsword for nothing.

I've sent a 12k combat mission to have Aiel assassinated (poor bastard isn't even Pincers-tier difficulty).

That is a wonderful idea! That would be awesome. A song for each major city, and then the entire map be divided into sections were that track is played.

Yes, there has been improvements, but still, not good enough quality for people who appreciate proper stereo recordings, which RuneScape audio is not and probably will never be.

No RS music for me, Sun Microsystems does a terrible job at making a good Java implementation for Linux (in my opinion).

There's some bug with it completely taking over the soundcard, not allowing anything else to be played so I tend to not give it any sound at all.

(if this is a problem actually caused by JaGeX, then my apologies, Sun!)

Not that I liked RS music much when I used to listen to it :x

This is is not down to the capabilities of Java.

Let me quote the the Audio Team Development Diary:

Now, every time a song or effect is played, the RuneScape game client dynamically downloads the sounds required to play it from the Jagex sound bank, so the Audio team has to make sure to keep file sizes as small as possible "It's a major technical and creative challenge, working towards these tiny file sizes without creating a lot of audio noise. We have to use lots of hiding/masking and noise reduction techniques," says Mod Dan A. It is possible, though, as Mod Bond follows that up by saying, "The sound bank could actually be compressed to, pretty much, fit on a single 1.44Mb floppy disk."

As you can see, the whole set of sound effects and instruments used in RuneScape music are fit into 1.44 megabytes - these instruments are used to recreate the music in your computer using the MIDI protocol. It saves a lot of memory space, but this is not recorded music. Few minutes of compressed recorded audio alone can take as much memory space as the Jagex sound bank. This is the reason why Jagex cannot use music recordings in RuneScape.

Only tracks I like that they have done is "Route of All Evil" and the other one that you get in the CT whilst chasing Surok Magis. Other than that it's whatever deathmetal/grindcore I'm hooked on which is currently As You Drown and Man Must Die.

Come on, you cant take the runescape developers seriously with that [bleepy] music

There is a hole in my desk, and shards of mahogany sticking out my face thanks to that.

Sure WoW has just 300 soundtracks (got me a soundtrack browser add-on), but besides the resonance quality (which is almost impossible to do with MIDI), most is on the same level as runescape. And their in-house metal band does not set standard to the in-game soundtrack.. oh, and takes some 10-15 more hours to download just the audio.

Are you just completely ignorant of how actual WoW music sounds? WoW music is 10x better than Runescape's in both technology and composition. Blizzard has an in-house orchestra.

Listen and feel ashamed:

If you read the Audio Team QnA you could tell that they knew how low quality the music was. They agreed that they would want to revamp the quality but they have very limited resources. The reason why Runesape music sucks is that the Audio team is 5 people where the graphics team is 50+

Indeed, the audio team is extremely small compared to the other teams. (Not counting the language teams which have what? 2 or 3 people in them.)

WoW music does sound much better quality wise, but its been pointed out why this is aswell.

I really wish they wouldnt compress the quality of the rs music, because id love for songs to sound how they are made.

(Example: http://www.youtube.c...?v=fbq0ZojIBRw)

If they got more people on the audio team and were allowed to use a not so compressed quality audio, im sure the music could be made loads better.

I have no problem with the current music though. I wont listen to it all the time, but once in a while.
