Aspergers

Featured Replies

I want to start a nice topic on Asperger syndrome. For the majority of you who don't understand it, here's the definition:

Asperger syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder, and people with it therefore show significant difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.

Now, for the minority of you that have it, how as it affected you? Aspergers syndrome is an umbrella term for AUTISM. Which means that people have difficulties with social interactions and inherit unusual/repetitive behaviors that interferes with your social life.

My uncle has aspbergers, as well some other thing (it seems I have Alzheimer's!). He's fairly high functioning but has a job, drives, and has his own place so he's doing alright.

I'd hate to have it though, it just seems like such a frustrating thing.

ex-friend has it. He thinks communism is a beautiful puzzle only three people in the world know how to put together, him, his dad, and a dead french historian from the 1700s...

I wrote a report on it, but it's not really effected me that much.

There was this one kid who went to my middle school who has Aspergers. He made a lot of weird noises to himself.

This is how Aspergers has affected me.

When i saw this thread my eyes lit up.

I have Aspergers :D

Great for grades, horrible for social interaction.

I hope you guys don't all go saying crap about it :shame:

I'd love it if you could talk about it a little.

Every time I hear stuff about these things, it's always from people who just researched and whatnot, never from a first hand source. Could be interesting :).

Well when i was in elementary school i would have fits quite often, starting people to make fun of me. Later on in elementary people started bullying me and this kept continuing until middle school, where i lost it and flipped all the desks in 3 classes in school. Then i ran home but a police car caught up to me. I then i had a tutor for most of 6th grade until i went to a "special school" which i graduated from last year. Now i'm in the high school program of that school and there are no bullies and everyone is friends. And through all this i always get A's.

Thats just school though. Outside of school i don't talk to anyone and i usually bounce a bounce back ball in the road talking to myself about made up anime and st00f. I also do special olympics which has greatly impacted my social skills to talk to new people. If i talk to people i know i will never stop, but with new people i don't usually talk. I'm also very protective of objects i care about like my stuffed rabbit Nutbrown which my mom got before i was born. Also i get very obsessive over certain things like TACOSSSSS. That's how i got my name on tif and rs, i love tacos too much.

The thing that amazes me the most is how smart you actually turn out. In 5th grade i went to some sort of neurologist and they gave me around a 126 for my IQ. On that note many people assume from Albert Einstein's fingerprints and smarts that he also had Aspergers.

That's only a summary though.

Half of the time I place no faith in these psychological disorders, because it usually seems like half of them are created for parents to have an excuse to stuff their kids full of pills instead of managing them. But, I'm sure there are cases that actually matter and cause trouble for folks. Never affected me, never known anyone with it.

Do you think ADHD is simply too much sugar in people? Or Bipolar people are indecisive as well? Aspergers is a very real thing.

It seems like you can't throw a rock without hitting ten kids on meds for ADHD, so I hold no belief in that "disease" - it's an excuse to act like a [bleep]tard. I don't know any bipolar people and hardly know what that entails. And read: half.

Well I'm not saying everyone who says they are ADD or ADHD actually are, many aren't. But it is still a very wide spread and serious condition, in all actuality.

There was a good documentary on over here a few weeks back that touched on this subject. "Louis Theroux: America's Medicated Kids".

Basically, he went to America and lived with families who had kids with stuff like ADHD, ADD and aspergers to see how it affected them. Well worth a watch.

Rocco, asthma isn't a psychological disorder like Aspergers. You really can't compare them. However yes, I agree that diseased people shouldn't let their condition hold them back.

I concur, but also note it's important not to judge people with debillitating diseases who let it hold them back, they may feel extremely depressed, and ostracized because of the disease; instead of them just being lazy.

I have to applaud Lent and Rocco for having the balls to say that. I feel the same way about things like this. Which is why I laughed at the line "Now, for the minority of you that have it, how as it affected you?" because I thought he was talking about OT.

I still understand it's a real disorder, but, I don't think it should hinder you that much nor be the justification to avoid doing things (jailtime for instance...).

And how do "social disorders" go? Aspergers kids can't hold a conversation or something?

"The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."

siggy3s.jpg

No, its more like if its someone we don't know, we don't start the situation. Also i tend to avoid the other person's face and walk around while talking to them.

On the note of being held back, there are always people who say this insane stuff about "they can't get a job" or "they can't get their drivers lisence" because of Asperger's. Trurth is we have better memories and smarts than more than half of the population on earth. There should be nothing holding us back, but they always say there is, when there isn't. I don't use it as an excuse, some people may, those people should be ashamed. We are only a little different, but everyone else is too. So for those people with Asperger's who do that, they should just cut it out, or it is even more proof that we can't do any of these things.

It was not created by parents at all. Aspergers was discovered by an Austrian pediatrician, who studied kids' behaviors and found out that some of the kids weren't

taking interest in social life and possessed extreme repetitive behaviors. It is simply a level of Autism, not independant. Also, Aspergers is not just an excuse

to not be able to get friends or go outside. thats like telling deaf kids that they can't hear, because of their ears...If you don't truely understand what Aspergers is,

that's fine. The only people I would talk to about this in person are my psychologists. Not some friends I've met in school for 3 months.

Lemme tell you guys one thing though, Autism is one thing that this society is probably....too arrogant to cope with, just like Homosexuality.

In that case, I have Asperger's and didn't even know it. Astounding.

Agreed. Even if you have the plague, you should pursue your life dream of becoming a CPR expert! Yea!

The thing that annoys me slightly is that Aspergers can mean different things, it doesn't always mean your bad at social interaction and it doesn't always mean you have a very small amount of interests.

I have an autistic sister, and my dad just purchased a book on aspergers syndrome for me. I'm not that social, I guess.

CasinoRoyalecopy-1.jpg

Ah, so I see I'm not the only guy here with Aspergers...

I'm a rather antisocial person, I've known that for a long, long time. It may be partially due to me having Aspergers, but I believe most of it is because I generally don't like people. We've all seen or heard some seriously messed up stuff that happens daily, and I've pretty much built myself a barrier of antisocial energy to distance myself from people and not go out much. In my mind this keeps me safe from falling victim to some chav pulling a knife for 'looking at him funny'.

That mindframe might be influenced by Aspergers, and it might not. I frankly don't know, and I don't plan on changing my ways anytime soon.

Yeah, I know this post will seem pretty pointless to some people. Still, that's what I have to say right now. I'm tired.

That's why you're on the TZDF blackdawn. Even your balls can tear zombies to shreds.

Most of these things sound exactly like what people called "shy" back when you were 7 years old. There are certainly still shy people at our age. Some of those things do sound intriguing, but more obsessive than antisocial. Like I'm particularly fastidious - and it borders on ridiculous - with some things, yet completely haphazard with others.

Although the combination of it all has to have a name, certainly.

Like Blackdawn's post: there are plenty of people like that, and I certainly wouldn't consider it a disease. Most personality disorders are just names for how people act - and, like I said, in many cases a way for people to stay on meds. Blackdawn just sounds very stubborn about maintaining a state of life without change. This can pose problems later, but it isn't like he won't be able to overcome them similarly to others.

Calling things like that a disorder or a disease is silly to me. A disease is something that hurts you, whereas this sounds more like it just slows you down a bit. I have a bunch of lung scarring from several bouts with pneumonia, and used to have an inhaler because they thought it was a minor case of asthma, but I just worked through it and now it only bothers me when I'm playing my harmonica for a while. Similar, only mine's a physical setback whereas Asperger's is mostly a psychological setback.

Now, I'm just gathering from their descriptions. Don't blame me because there are kids elsewhere who can barely function.

In my opinion, modern American medicine is far too prescription-happy. We have so many different medicines that doctors are just ready to get them out there. I've always followed traditional "healing" methods. Cold? Have some soup. Allergies? Get out and do some yard work. It sucks so hard when you're doing it, but you feel so much better afterwards it's completely worth it.

Ok, maybe lots of people act like Blackdawn, because lots of people have Aspergers? The ONLY Psychological disorder that I as well believe is overhyped is ADD, and ADHD. However, my whole family has severe ADHD (although my brother has ADD, and so he moves around like a sloth; all day every day. But Aspergers is a very real thing, is it true that a lot of people want to feel "exclusive" so they pretend to have a disease/disorder? Of course, people pretend to be serial killers for attention, does that mean everyone who has a disease is pretending? Of course not. Also on a side note, in regards to your disease statement that it "hurts people not just slows them down" I have Candidasis, and Leaky Gut Syndrome, and almost no one knows because I don't tell them. My life is a living heck but, I don't show it, does that make it any less of disease? Certainly not, I mean I've not been in the Hospital since the time I split my head open at my old job.
