Aspergers

I disagree, I'm a nerdy/shy/X kid and would like to be more social, but I find it hard. Does this mean I have asperger's? No. Don't generalize that people are introverted because they choose to be. Some people just don't know don't have the initiative to begin socializing. This does not mean they have any sort of diagnosable problem, however.

you can see the social signs though, you can gain experience, you can see and analyze the reactions of what you actually do and improve. You don't need to be told "what you said there hurts my feelings" to see the social cues (as the person i have an experience with aspergers through wants us to do to help him learn).

that is the major difference: you can learn and see with experience, at least he can't.

No, it doesen't MEAN.

Its one of many FACTORS they look for when specifying you with aspheregers syndrom, on top of a pile of others.

Exactly, that's what I was getting at. There are other factors involved that don't just equate to shyness.

My point is that nerds are not the same as sphergers kids, and alot of people on this topic seem to be ignoreing that, just saying things like 'Aspheregers is just nerds who don't want to be normal.'

I don't really think they're ignoring that it exists, besides the obvious trolls that just want you to get angry

I saw a while ago someone posted "Also, stop trying to classify yourselves as autistic. Just because you're a hermit and a nerd doesn't mean you are extra special "

Thats a great example of the ignorance im talking about here.

How is that ignorance? He's saying that there is a difference between being nerdy and having Aspergers. He was saying how people who don't actually have it will think they have it, to use it as an excuse.

and just because im an asphergers kid dosn't mean i WANT to be a hermit or a nerd. I would love to be that normal kid.

Almost everybody wants to be that normal kid, Aspergers or not.

I see what you mean, once again a communication fail on my part.

i just used his as an example, but alot of people i have met just think asphergers is a dumb thing to classify nerds as now.

I HATE THAT.

Their is a big difference!

im useing to many captals -.-

People who have it are always shy, quiet, socially awkward, seem VERY opposed to change, etc.

reminds me of myself

Okay, im going to come out here and start a flame war.

There IS a difference between a NERD and ASPHERGERS!

i have asphergers, and the biggest thing i have noticed is that i WANT to be socally active, i just don't know how.I don't know how to talk to people, or how to handle any normal social issues.

Well who says everyone was born with the knowledge of how to talk to people? Sure some have natural charisma, and some just work hard.

I was not born with a knowledge of things like this. Most kids can start off nice and social, i couldn't. I didn't know how to talk to kids, to make friends. Kids needed to make friends with me, or else i would be out of luck. I simply couldn't be social.

Teachers have always had to make themselfs EXTREMLY exact about what they are saying to me, as i cannot take verbal cues like sarcasm. I could never tell you, to this day, if a girl EVER shot me a sign. I would never see it. Social cues, like those, DO NOT COMPUTE. literally.

Sounds normal to me, wow I mean a lot of people suck at social cues.

What i have noticed is that nerds don't WANT to be socally active. They could very well blend themselfs in like a normal human being. Alot of them that i know ARE funny, HAVE friends, they just prefer the soltude (and COD rankings).

And sure as CABBAGE people are diagnosed with this syndrom and DON'T have it, they want a excuse to BE the nerd they are.

And by GOD, the kids who i have met who I KNOW have asphergers need extra help, and they NEED their special care.

*GASP*

im out of breath, i need a quick break.

I'll continue my rant some other day -.-

Doesn't mean you have aspergers, did you get a clincal diagnosis from more than one doctor? One doctor thought I was bipolar, while the other one thought I had what's it called... conduct disorder. Both were wrong, I actually have an immune disease that affects my brain like a mental disease. So no offence (and I'm not discounting you, you may actually have aspergers) but you might wanna go get a 2nd opinon.

Yeah, i know this is off topic but i have to agree, i think ADD/ADHD is just a stupid exuse for parents who can't control their kids.

as far as aspergers goes, in my elementary school there was this one kid and i'm 95% sure he had aspergers

ever day this kid would be sitting in the chair in front of the office with all his stuff on, ready to get picked up(early). to literally every passerby, he would say "I SAT ON TWO SCISSORS". and when he was in my lunch in 4th grade, we had these cute little milk cartons at lunch. instead of opening them, he would stab his pencil through and drink from there.

also there was a kid at my middle school, he was real smart (a grade ahead of me) if ANYTHING interupted him while he was reading a book, he would start from the very beginning. very calmly, however.

I never really understood what exactly the problem is for people with aspergers, if it's something that affects you mentally you surely could do something about it yourself? Like tacodude on the first page (just an example) who says he has trouble looking at people when he talks to them. If you know you have trouble with that and notice you're not looking at someone, can't you just force yourself to look at them?

This might be pretty ignorant but I really wonder why you wouldn't be able to deal with it without medication.

I guess I just dislike people who say they can't do stuff. You obviously can, you just haven't tried hard enough.

I will quote what i said earlier, as most of you seem to have chosen to ignore this fact, and only been looking at one facet of aspergers:

Hmm so it's more that they lack the ability to see social signs altogether, even if they try. Would be a physical problem then, and indeed pretty hard to overcome. Like running the marathon with only one leg, right? Even though wiki says there's no clear common place in the brain that causes it.

exactly. look at all of those who have "diagnosed" themselves as living with aspergers' who doesn't know even one of the two most common symptoms. Doctors and psychiatrists are educated for a reason.

The only way to overcome an illness / disease / injury is to work hard.

I'm sick of people acting like they don't have to be productive members of society because they have whateveritis.

I completly agree.

People claim they have dyslexia but they shouldn't go along with it they need to work harder and that applys to everything.

Also, unless aspergers is extremly serious it doesn't even need to be diagnosed, its just that the person is slightly different - A phsyciatrist should tell the school what changes need to be made but the way its done is actually making things bigger then they need to be.

My nine year old cousin has Asperger's and what I notice most is his reluctance to be hugged/touched (although he'll randomly hug you sometimes). He used to run screaming from my mom and I... :P He's really smart but people don't understand him (psychologically, not verbally, he can talk fine when he wants to). He's often silent and won't talk, and kind of the sort to go hide in the corner.

I recently helped out at a Special Olympics event and another soccer event for special needs kids. There's a wide range of mental abilities that are classified as autism, so just because someone seems normal, doesn't mean they have some issues with others.

I do believe that people use illness as a crutch too often. I have type 1 diabetes and play ice hockey, soccer, go to camp, and do a wide variety of 'normal' activities. You have to want to do stuff, and not be all 'oh I have -illness- I can't do that' (i hate people like that). And I don't want you sitting on your butt when you can hold a job.
