July 22, 201015 yr Pretty unprofessional of MMG. TBH, I can pretty much accept unprofessionalism from Runescape... Every single large gaming investor has turned Jagex down, and as evident, tried it themselves... So far, no game has yet managed to surpass RuneScape... Stick it to the man, Gerhard, their fault for not tagging along the massivly prosperous project that is RuneScape :) But, let's be somewhat realistic... The only TRUE test if Jagex is that much more awesome then Sony, EA, or Activision, is if Stellar Dawn becomes the 2nd most popular free game on the net :)To be honest, it's pretty dang stupid of Mark Gerhard to call out Sony like that. Sony is a company that is recognized throughout the world. Even the most remote parts of the world, people know what it is. That being said, Sony has the political, economical, and ect power to bury Jagex with ease if it wanted. By the way, there are many big named p2p-only MMORPGs that surpass Runescape in terms of active players. No, WoW is not the only one. It's kinda funny how many RS players only use WoW as their "other MMORPG" example when there are many, many others. To each their own.
July 22, 201015 yr To me it would have been worse if MMG had gone 'Oh... yeah, that game is kinda better than ours. Runescape is kinda [cabbage]! Hahaha!' Because then everyone would be going RAHRAHRAHHEHATESRUNESCAPE. If he DOESN'T do that, everyone goes RAHRAHRAHRAHHE'SEVILANDUNPROFESSIONAL. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. July 22, 201015 yr What the hell is all this talk about "being unprofessional"? I don't know where some of you guys live or what rock you live under, but companies trash talk other companies and their products all the damn time.At first I was thinking that it seemed a bit harsh the way he was talking of free realms, but this point is very true. If I recall correctly, after E3 this year some guy high up in Sony was talking complete trash of Nintendo and their 3DS, and that was only because it got a lot more positive feedback than any of Sony's stuff. So while I see this move by MMG unnecessary, it doesn't bother me. But arent there plenty of methods to train your skills now, therefore qualifying for deep skilling gameplay? "There are only two strategies in war. Move forward or change. July 22, 201015 yr I want to know why Jagex can't relase something without dropping the "we own a Guiness World Record" line at the end. It's sickening. Because it is a very large achievement in gaming terms? And if you read, Jagex didn't even say it, it was the article writer who did. That is often the case too. I see no problem with him preferring his own game to another one, why should anybody?Perhaps that is the case in this article, but I've seen them drop that line MANY times. And please, that is hardly something to brag about when you have a paying member base as well. I wouldn't say a word if all they did was put out a F2P game, but to me it says that their game sucks just enough for those F2P players not to upgrade to a membership. "He could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder."
July 22, 201015 yr Tbh, I'd rather see a game that catered to nobody instead of one that caters to the worst possible audiences: i.e., low-levels noobs, younger users, and (to use his own word) the insipid PKing community. Since when has jagex ever catered to the PKing community? :unsure:They spent the entire first half of 2009 trying in vain to provide a reasonable alternative to the old Wilderness. Their current system ruined the economy by creating items whose only purpose is to be converted directly into gold. The Ancient Curses prayer book is mainly geared towards PKing. The climbing boot debacle originated because some idiot mod thought most PKers paid 70k for climbing boots and wanted the GE to reflect that-- the results were a change that made many PKers obscenely rich and completely ruined the viability of using climbing boots to PK. Shall I continue?
July 23, 201015 yr I wonder if he was drunk during that interview. The revolving door of RS CEO's is turning again I can sense. This guy will be canned for his unprofessional attitude to the press. In trying for everybody but catering for nobody, Free Realms sauntered past 10 million registered users in just one year. Even Sony's John Smedley - the man who turned down Jagex - was "pleasantly surprised" by its commercial performance. ^ Love how the journalist used this to refute Mg's statements. It's ironic that RS imitates and lifts ideas from competitors and then has the audacity to look down on other games. Quickchat is directly lifted from Club Penguin. Arrows and the safe starting area and the pathing for quests is directly lifted from Free Realms. Is Free Realms good? It's a SONY product. You can tele directly to anyone in your friends list. It's easy to meet people to chat with. There are lots of quests to do. It's intuitive and more advanced then RS in some ways. And Free Realms did not copy RS at all if they had, RS would have been descimated. All players would have jumped ship. Does anyone notice the lack of details about the new game and the reliance on harping on about Runescape's success. Quick chat "ripped" from Club Penguin? Club Penguin created the idea of predetermined phrases? I saw them around many, many years ago, before any Club Penguin. How could marking arrows telling you what direction to go in possibly be Free Realm's original idea? I don't quite understand why this is so "unprofessional". He voiced his opinion on a game, this isn't harsh politics or anything. I play World of Warcraft, and I can say that the storyline World of Warcraft derives from is much longer, and more in depth than almost any of Runescape's existing content. The fact that RS quest developers can't even manage to write a quest without inserting a thousand pop culture references just shows how pedestrian the writing at Jagex is. WoW's lore, while definitely not the gold standard of storytelling, is at least deep and contains heavy, mature themes. One of the reasons i'm so excited about Stellar Dawn is that they actually have a writing staff for that game. Hopefully that translates into some mature stuff with more depth. -------------------------------------------------------------------
