Star_Fox
To all you players out there, do you feel accomplished on what you've done in Runescape? If you don't know what self esteem is, it's the basic idea of how you perceive your social status or guidelines on what you need to feel successful. Let's say for instance, you have a really cool character with a bunch of 99s,cool stats, cool armor etc etc...You would obvious feel more powerful and self-worthy compared tosomeone who's an average joe. So I am asking you, does Runescape increase your self-esteem? What I mean by "increase" is that someof you may not feel very accomplished in real life or you may not have a very good self esteem probablybecause you don't have friends, get low grades, aren't rich, don't have a car to drive...you get the idea. But since you play Runescape, there is no doubt that you have at least accomplished something that willmake you feel self-worthy. If you ask me. Yes. It does increase my self-esteem. I hardly see why it shouldn't. Getting attentionand some compliments in a game can be just as rewarding and satisfying. Jimmyd17
Undoubtedly. Who doesn't like setting and accomplishing goals? Even if people "irl" can't see what you've done, you sure can. And self recognition is what self esteem is all about.
Aiel
my epeen is [bleep]ing huge. Troacctid
So I am asking you, does Runescape increase your self-esteem?I don't see why it should, any more than any other random web-surfing would. I've scored 150b and counting in Pokémon Pinball Advance, but you don't see me bragging about it. I mean, aside from just then. Also, what's up with those line breaks in your post? They're oddly-spaced. Read my blog | Follow me on Twitter | Track my XP
MightyMuddy
No it decreases it to be totaly honest. At school I get pretty good grades, above average and have a decent ammount of friends, and although no one makes fun of me for playing runescape, I'm not going to get many compliments on it haha. wioneo
Well, not to be an [wagon], but I am somewhere between above average and good in just about every aspect of life and am relatively arrogant because of that. In RS, at one point I sucked, and at that time I felt slightly bad, but now I'm above average in-game too. So no, Rs has never increased my self-esteem, but it did slightly decrease it for a period of time. EDIT: Is there a list of all of the Tip.It filters somewhere? Some of them are really interesting. Triquos
I don't think RS has increased my self esteem really. When I compare myself to others I think I'm alright, but certainly not as good as people with 200M exp in multiple skills, people with fire capes, full 3rd age+elysian/divine etc. in fact it makes me depressed to think how much money I could have saved over time if I didn't level up my skills all the time. In terms of escapism however, Runescape has always been there for me. Especially when real life got the better of me, I could just play RS and escape it all. Playing RS has certainly increased my creativity and imagination. Playing RS, browsing the suggestions forum etc. has got me excited in real life for possible careers in the future, like animation, game design etc. I'm proud to say that Runescape is and will always be the best game I've ever played. I used to be embarassed when I said I played RS, but not anymore. I look at Runefest and the lucky people who were able to attend it and I think wow, that would be so much fun to attend with the balloon popping, all the inside info on upcoming updates and meeting J mods IRL!!! etc. I think RS has become my hobby as such. Either way, Runescape is my lemonade when the real world gives me lemons.

OT: RS did boost my self esteem for a little while. I actually was good at something for a while. However, IRL stuff now takes that role, so I don't RS any more. FederalXTC
I may not have any 99's, or Barrows gear, or a Chaotic Longsword/Rapier, etc etc. However, I set and accomplish goals (one of my first being 50 Construction already completed =D), so I'm plenty happy. Youmu
It does kind of increase my self-esteem, somewhat. However, that's not really the only source. Ginger_Warrior
You could give me 200M xp in all skills, but if my life was so bad that I needed to be on RuneScape for the length of time required to get said amount of experience, I reckon I'd be close to suicide and almost certainly without a career. Like anyone else, I play games to "escape", not to bolster self-esteem. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |

Will H
At a personal level, yes. It gives you a feeling that you can achieve something, which is all too rare in the real world. However, it isn't the kind of self-esteem that improves your interaction with real people, it just gives you the drive and confidence to try to achieve something real. ~ W ~
Obtaurian
In Runescape, having nearly maxed combat makes me feel like somewhat of a badass . . . IN RUNESCAPE. It's that slight lack of badassness that really drives me (looking at you, 95 prayer, 95 ranged, and 80 dungeoneering <_< ). Runescape does nothing for me IRL. I can't say I've ever met a girl who was impressed when I told her I had 99 slayer. But in all seriousness, I can see the OP's point about maybe failing IRL but accomplishing things in RS. I just don't have that. I'm just as goal-oriented IRL as I am in RS, so I would consider myself to be pretty accomplished in both worlds. To put it bluntly, [bleep] off. Omali
I learned a lot about economics from Runescape, which helped me ace a college course, so yes Runescape did help my self esteem. Other than that, I don't really advertise that I play Runescape.

MerchantInTheDark
Anything that makes you feel good boosts your self esteem - I worked hard for months coming up with merchanting techniques during my quest for a partyhat, and I felt pretty damn good [and still do] about my accomplishment once I achieved it. Doing well and accomplishing goals in anything is good for self esteem, so RS is no exception. stonewall337
Compared to IRL, not at all, unless its something like how much faster my typing has gotten lol. In RS, I am better then most other 'scapers, its just a fact, at least as far as knowledge, gear, stats, and ability are concerned. So no, not really. In order for that to happen I'd need to have like a 10b bank and be maxed everything. But as of right now, I'm richer then most of my friends, but several of them are maxed, or almost maxed, and quite a few others are quite a bit higher in stats then I am. So no it doesn't. Shauly
I've been playing for years, got something like 11 99s. And no it really doesn't. If you do feel good about yourself by playing this game then you need to realize theres more to life this RS... This game may take away stress, but thats really all it does plus providing enjoyment. It shouldn't increase your self esteem.
