Overview of the Role

Crew Trainees

  • Trainees are potential crew members with limited crew access. They work behind the scenes with other crew members and the Crew Leader; they stay trainees until the Crew Leader deems them suitable for full crew access.

Crew

  • The goal of a crew member is to aid RuneScape players with their experiences and keep pages and databases up-to-date. Each crew member has a specific role and section they upkeep (explained below). Crew members are not permanently locked into one specific area, rather it is their main focus and as time permits they focus their times within other areas.

Senior Crew

  • Senior crew members share some responsibilities with the Crew Leader; such as, assigning Crew members tasks on update days and checking/publishing website content when it is ready to be put on the website.

Crew Leader

  • Simply put, the role of Crew Leader is to manage the Crew members and website. Responsibilities include - coordinating crew members roles and workloads, assigning tasks on update days, providing guidance to crew members, responding to topics in the Website Discussion forum, announcing new features and updates on the main page and communicating with Senior Crew and Administrators.

Day in the Life of a Crewbie

When I get on my computer, I usually log into Runescape before I get started on anything. From there, I log onto the forums, check on the Website Corrections forum and bestiary submissions to see if there is anything that I add without any researching. After that, it's basically the normal day of Runescaping, reading topics on the forums, and chatting with friends.
The first thing that I do when I start my computer while not doing school work, I first check the Runescape main page to check if there are any new updates to deal with, and then I check the Crew forums to check on the status of the recent updates. If there are no outstanding updates, I check the website based submission forms, to see if there are any that can be done quickly, and then I check the Website Updates and Corrections forums. After dealing with any quick and easy submissions, I go back and research the more difficult tasks. After this, I wait for some time before repeating this. When I have an ongoing request for information from site users for various research purposes I will also frequently check on the submissions after checking to see if there is a new update.
As soon as I have some free time I should be on the computer. RuneScape and Tip.it will be the first things opened and I'll get on with playing and seeing what has happened on Tip.it since I've been absent from it. If there is anything free that I feel I can deal with, I'll try to get it done, then I keep checking throughout the day for anything new to pop up, but normally it will just be spent browsing the forums and playing RuneScape and possibly seeing if anybody requires any help with anything that I can manage.

When I get online, I check a few different forums (tip.it, my clan, national guard), I get the latter two out of the way first, then focus on tip.it. If there's an update, I make sure I get my area complete first, and coordinate with other crewbies if there's something I cannot do. If there's not an update or I'm done with what I can do, I check if there's any submissions, if they need confirmation, I'll log in game and try to get them if possible. Once all that stuff is done, I'll just chat with the other crewbies, sometimes they have tasks needing complete, and I try to help.

When I log in, I check the Crew/Staff/WU&C forums for any new posts. Then I check if there are any assignments for me and if I can help with others' assignments, then I scan submissions to see if I'm able to handle them. After that, it's just regular playing and chatting around.

Most of my time is spent on maintaining the code for the Tip.it content management system. It's a custom built system that allows the crew to maintain all information (text, images, calculators etc.) that is used on the web site. Because it is a custom built system we can change it to support anything Jagex adds to RuneScape. Summoning and Dungeoneering (to name just two major updates) required us to add quite a bit of stuff to our back-end code. There's always some feature or function that can be improved to either help the crew with their tasks, or help our visitors with finding the information they seek.

Normally I start up Swiftkit and then browse around the forums looking for assignments/updates or a few of the topics I regularly post on. Once or twice a week I'll check submissions on the forums and through the website to see if there's anything I can do .After that, it's Runescape and Skype, mixed with a bit of Sci/Tech Google news. I kill Bork and farm herbs daily, and I normally have a specific goal to work on.

After working 8 to 6, I come home, give my fiancé a nice kiss and then sit down to go through the chat messages from the day to see if there's anything needing to be done. I normally run through my todo list that I left myself the day before and then continue from there.

Wake up, drag myself to class, drag myself back, take a shower, then the day begins! Check Crew skype and forums for stuff to do, noob around scape for a few hours, go out if applicable. Exciting.

As far as Tip.it is concerned, I first check if there's any user submission, either on the forum or sent through the website, that I can quickly or with little research take care of. If not, I tend to spend some time on whatever project(s) I may currently be working on. In addition, when playing RuneScape, I'm always on the lookout for any information that might be beneficial to Tip.it, and when questing I always attempt to take care of any quest submissions related to that quest.

For me, a typical day of Tip.it would begin with catching up on the news I've missed since I was last online with fellow crewbies, etc. Then move on to checking out the website updates and corrections topic to see if there are any new submissions that I can take care of. If there are, I'll take care of them and close the topics. If there are no topics left that I can easily handle, I'll get in game to confirm some of the submissions that need in game confirmation and take care of them. After that, I'll either continue working on projects I have going on or I'll help out with other projects that need an extra hand.

I browse TIF daily and catch up on any posts in the staff forums; I read any messages I have and respond to anything interesting or needing assistance. I frequently check the Website Updates & Corrections and Website discussion forums and change/update/add website pages when needed. I'm almost always logged into skype and often chat/help other staff members. My crew workload includes communication with all members of TIF (mostly crewbies), discussing various issues revolving Tip.it and working on the frequent 'work-in-progress' projects I have going on. Life outside Tip.it includes classes, work and activities including my friends.
Now that I have retired from the main leadership position of Crew, I don't follow much of a routine anymore. One of the biggest areas we are lacking in as of now is Mapping and I do my best to help out with all world map and dungeon updates. Right now we're totally caught up. I also dabble with PHP coding in small amounts and also help out in the capacity of a Senior Crew member. I keep an eye out for earth-shattering ideas proposed in the Website Discussions forum and I also monitor the submission boards for things I can do, particularly mapping and coding jobs that take more of a specialist. I work very closely with the Crew Leader to ensure everything runs smoothly.
I'll wake up then have a shower. Jump on the net and check my emails and any important topics from multiple forums. Then have my brekky, and zoom off to work. (I fix computers). at work, if I have spare time I might duck onto Tip.it to check Crew related stuff. I get home at 6pm and then I'll get more into "Crew Mode". I start by checking any new updates, then move onto the quests section in "Website Updates and Corrections". afterwards I'll browse the rest for anything I might be able to fix or do. Then I'll either play Runescape, Call of Duty 2, my PSP or just relax around the house with a nice glass of Bourbon. :)
After I'm done with all my classes and have finished my massive piles of homework, I'll usually take a look at the Crew chats that we have and see if there's any work to be done, or any help needed. If there's a Runescape update to the game, that is top priority, and I get down to business if I'm needed. Then I'll look at user submissions, specifically with the Bestiary, and see if there's anything I can do there! And then when all is said and done, I give Diesel all my work.
Wake up with effort - no matter what time it is - and get Coffee so I can drag myself to the local university and my classes. After my classes I usually go have drinks with friends, followed by homework in the library or at home. After that's done I look if there's any work to be done for the Crew, submissions to comfirm and whatnot. On the side I'd play some RuneScape while at this. When done with these I'd be on skype with friends from university, family, and some of my closer RuneScape friends, or going out with "the gang".
Log on and see if there are any item/bestiary reports I can deal with, then generally I would check the forums and see if there is anything I can do and then play RuneScape/try get some of my to-do list actually done!
Usually the first thing I do when I get on is to check the crew forums to see if there's any new announcements, projects, info, or anything else that I need to be aware of. Then if there's anything from the last update that I've been assigned or needs doing I'll work on that and try to get it done if possible. After that I'll usually spend a little while going through the submissions sent in through the submit correction tool on the website and the website updates and corrections forum for any quick submissions that can be added right away (ie the submitter has picture confirmation etc.). Once I've spent a little while in corrections I'll start working on any long term projects or some of the harder submissions that have to be researched ingame.
My days are hardly routine! I like researching items and bestiary submissions because I learn a lot of new information this way.
Typically, I come home from school and get cracking on my homework. I usually can go through it quick and have time to get online can check out anything that needs work on the Crew. The Updates and Corrections forum, for example, or whether or not there is an update that day. On a typical weekday, I don't have very much time due to the fact that school swallows 7 hours of my time on one end and swimming takes up another 3 hours in the afternoon (and sometimes 1 hour before school). On weekends, the timing is better, and typically that's when I get the most work done.

Q&A

  • [hide=Q: Is it true that U need to spend alot of time working on the forums and therefore have less time to actually play runescape itself?]
    • lalala7324: I probably steal a bit too much in-game time for myself. There's a massive list of things to do on the crew forums that always seems to be growing!

    • Vulxai: Well there's actually a lot to do in-game, mostly researching game data, getting images, doing quests, etc, so I still get a lot of in-game time.

    • Shelby_Polo: I split my time between RS and crew work pretty well, sometimes even multi-tasking.

    • Tim: I would say I play Runescape more then forum browsing.

    • All_Bogs: While Tip.it work does take up time, I wouldn't necessarily spend this time playing RuneScape otherwise.

    • zaaps1: It's not impossible, but yes, it does end up with me having less time in-game. Although, when possible, I like to set myself up doing something like mining at Living Rock Caverns or casting String Jewellery so I still get a little accomplished in Runescape while being able to devote a majority of my attention to crew work.

    • Jaffy1: I find I spend more time on the forums or trying to comfirm things within the game than actual playing at the moment (I'm in a busy period with real life things), but like anything, it's a choice I made by being part of the crew. :^_^:

    • Vhellcat: I make it a point to make 'time for myself' otherwise I might end up getting resentful that it's "all work and no play". I'm now more aware when I'm playing that we may be seeking information to verify, update or add new content. I don't mind taking the extra time to get the information (or screen shots) needed. I also like that I may do something I haven't done in a long time (or ever!) to try and verify submissions and sometimes end up learning new things!

    • Howlin0001: Well the Crew doesn't need to spend too much time on the forums. Most of it would really be either editing guides or in game researching.

    • Xena_Dragon: There are only so many hours in day, so some gaming time has to be sacrificed to do crew work. On the other hand, some crew tasks require me to do stuff in the game that I would not have done otherwise, so it enriches my RuneScape experience.

    • wyvren2000: Yes, however a fair bit of crew work requires time ingame playing

    • Speedyshel: I spend quite a significant amount of time on the forums when I'm not preoccupied with school or work in RL. My game time dropped when I starting working on the crew.

    • Juhnie: Of course the work eats some in-game time — sometimes our work takes place in-game researching, though. :)

    • Matthew: Yes and no. Some might say they get to play more seeing as we have to confirm stuff, but I think it's the opposite. I work on things that keep me 100% occupied.

    • Tecmaster532: I wouldn't really say that. Whenever there's an update or we get a submission we have to check I spend quite a bit of time ingame confirming it. I do spend some time here doing work on the forums but I do spend plenty of time ingame.

[hide=Q: How long, on average, do all of you spend your time on the forums?]

  • lalala7324: I'm on the forums way too much. Probably 3-4 hours daily. Most of the time I'm doing my homework and browsing forums in the background.

  • Vulxai: If I'm home, I'm on the forums. Let's just leave it at that.

  • Shelby_Polo: Too much; I typically have TIF open in another tab and even browse it on my phone from time to time.

  • Tim: Probably 30mins a day.

  • All_Bogs: Not too long. Leaving a website submission topic open while I patch it up doesn't count as spending time on the forums, imo :P

  • zaaps1: I spend quite a long time on forums, but I'm not sure I can give an estimate. I know many of the other crew members are also active on the forums.

  • Vhellcat: *Looks around* Not much... most of the work I do is with the website "behind a dark curtain". I think I might have "forum-phobia"!

  • Howlin0001: Too long tbh.

  • Xena_Dragon: As a coder I spend very little time on the forums. But if I do, you can find me in the Website Updates & Corrections forum.

  • wyvren2000: Can't speak for everyone else but I spend around an hour a day.

  • Speedyshel: When not busy with RL, I can easily spend at least 4 or more hours on the forums in a day.

  • Juhnie: I'd say approximately 1-2 hours a day at best when I'm free to work around. A lot of our work is done outside the forums, though.

  • Matthew: Very little. I check every once in a while if there's posts that need to be checked in on, but otherwise there's no need to spend a lot of time on the forum.

  • Tecmaster532: It depends on the day, on an update day or in the immediate aftermath of a large update I can easily spend most of my free time that day on the forums working on updating the site with the newest information from the update. On a non-update day I'll usually spend an hour or two poking around website updates and corrections.

[hide=Q: What's your favorite kind of cookie?]

  • lalala7324: Soft. On that note, either snickerdoodle or chocolate chip.

  • Vulxai: In all honesty...I don't eat cookies

  • Shelby_Polo: Peanut butter

  • Tim: The Awesome Kind. :shades:

  • All_Bogs: Thin waffles.

  • zaaps1: Chocolate Chip, but I'm pretty picky about my cookies. It can't be crunchy or chewy, which is why I usually end up making my own instead of buying them.

  • Jaffy1: Chocolate chip!

  • Vhellcat: Edible.

  • Howlin0001: Edible ones?

  • Xena_Dragon: Stroopwafel.

  • wyvren2000: Free cookies

  • Speedyshel: Yummeh! Cookies. My favorite cookie is chocolate chip (or with M&Ms if that's an option) :D

  • Juhnie: Broccoli.
    LOLWAT

  • Matthew: The non-fattening healthy kind :P

  • Tecmaster532: White chocolate macadamia nut! :D

[hide=Q: What are the crews day-to-day duties, IE. when there is no update, do you update areas of the website etc.?]

  • Vulxai: Well my crew duties start off with checking for any guides needing release, any item/shop submissions, if Cow's on Skype I'll annoy him a bit, check out the Website Updates and Corrections topics, if needed, go in-game and confirm them, otherwise we have lists of things that need being done, so I might hop on one of those.

  • Shelby_Polo: I personally always have a side project or idea I'm working on, other than that, I handle user submissions.

  • Tim: For me, browsing around the site's Guides and Quest Guides, updating them as I do the quests and checking into the "Website Updates and Suggestions" thread.

  • All_Bogs: Submission and working on new projects and improvements.

  • zaaps1: Yes, when there is no update, it's maintenance or developing need guides, tools, etc.

  • Jaffy1: Managing submissions, trying to confirm what can be confirmed, and updating guides whenever needed.

  • Vhellcat: There is always something to be done and most of it isn't noticeable right off the bat. There are no announcements when we update entry information, verify submissions, etc... The day when there is NOTHING to do for Crew... is the day the Earth gets sucked into a vortex.

  • Howlin0001: It differs between days and how they are feeling, but generally I would try get some of my to-do list done, check item and bestiary submissions and some other misc stuff.

  • Cowman_133: When there are periods of no updates or update assignments are complete, we look over submissions from users and also update old content/work on new content and features for the site. Pretty well a cycle.

  • Xena_Dragon: I take care of fixing bugs and adding new features to tip.it's database backend system.

  • wyvren2000: We deal with any submissions that come in, or we just play the game and look out for errors while we are playing

  • Speedyshel: When update days arrive, if there's calculator work to be done, I'll handle it first and then move onto other areas where my help might be needed. Otherwise, from day to day it's mostly confirming corrections submitted by users or adding to the content already on the guides. i.e. adding images to quest guides, etc. :)

  • Juhnie: Whenever there's no update assignments to do, surfing through submissions and handling them is the #1 destination.

  • Matthew: There's always someone doing a side project, that might require Quality Analysis. Some people comb through the site seeing if they can find any errors, but of course that's pretty rare ;)

  • Tecmaster532: When there's no update I'll either be working on any long term projects that I have or I'll be checking out website updates and corrections or the submissions from the 'submit correction' tool. You guys certainly keep us busy in there making sure we have the latest info. :P

[/hide]

[hide=Q: Are you all secret agents/in a secret agency?... because you're always on constant missions.]

  • Vulxai: I can't tell you that.

  • Shelby_Polo: I am unable to answer this question at this time.

  • Tim: I'm afraid if I told you, I'd have to kill you.

  • All_Bogs: It wouldn't be secret any more if we told...

  • zaaps1: Of course.

  • Vhellcat: Who do you work for? I cannot confirm nor deny your inquiry.

  • Cowman_133: This has been brought up before, but of course we cannot disclose too much about this.

  • Xena_Dragon: I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. Also; whatever you heard, it isn't true!

  • wyvren2000: As the wise Oracle Egg says: "Muhahaha, the plan for an eggier world is going eggcelently!"

  • Speedyshel: We've been told that we can't tell, don't ask why...

  • Juhnie: If we'd tell that, it wouldn't be secret anymore, would it now? :P

  • Matthew: Keeping the site running smoothly, and keeping it up to date IS a constant job, yes. But secret agent? Nah.

  • Tecmaster532: -no comment-

[/hide]

[hide=Q: When you write up quest guides, do you follow a guide on another website if you have not started?]

  • lalala7324: I've never written a quest guide and been beaten by another fansite :shades: Unlike other guides, quest guides are URGENT top priority (I just made up that classification) for the associated crew, and we like to have them out within the day, if not within a few hours. There have been a few times when I have rushed out of class and missed a meal in order to get a guide out as quickly as possible. With that said, users sometimes submit little skeleton guides for how to do a quest, and we do use those if necessary.

  • Vulxai: Nope. I don't do quest guides, but if I have a certain update to do, I make sure I actually go in-game and do it myself, seeing as how other fansites are people too, so they can make mistakes, and we don't want the same mistake on our site.

  • Shelby_Polo: Tip.it quests guides are written the day the quest is released, and no other website typically has their guide released by then; therefore making us unable to use another guide ;-)

  • Tim: From bare scratch. I never rely on other resources apart from my own or another crew/staff members.

  • zaaps1: No, when the Crew writes a quest guide, we typically do it ourselves and reflect on our experience, or take information from contributors.

  • Jaffy1: No, I do quests by myself, especially paying careful when looking to comfirm corrections and additions to quest guides.

  • Vhellcat: :o There are OTHER websites?! ;)

  • Cowman_133: Nope. If you look at other guides first, you will subconsciously take words and ideas from that content and then you can be dinged for plagiarism or copyright infringement, which isn't fun.

  • Xena_Dragon: I either do the quest without any guide, making lots and lots of notes and screenshots along the way for our own guide, or I use a guide one of our crew members just made, and verify everything in it.

  • Speedyshel: I'm probably the last crewbie who'll write a guide, I stick to numbers :P

  • Juhnie: Nope. (I have never written a Quest Guide myself though... YET.)

  • Matthew: Absolutely not. There's always someone in the crew that is in a different time zone that works out well to do the quest. They take notes during it, and the others follow it to add in other ideas. We always try to get a guide out as quick as possible.

  • Tecmaster532: Nope, we'll write the quest guide simply off of our experiences with the quest itself. With one of the recent quests that I wrote the guide for, I wrote the guide as I did the quest to make sure that I got accurate information. Don't forget, other fansites can be wrong sometimes, it's best to personally see and confirm all of the information going into the guide ourselves.

[hide=Q: Have you ever bought anything from the tipit shop?]

  • Vulxai: No, but I thought about it. Then Psych came on TV and I quickly forgot.

  • Shelby_Polo: Not personally, but I know some who have.

  • Tim: Not yet, I was thinking of buying a shirt for "Pimp'n Pride".

  • All_Bogs: ...we have a shop?

  • zaaps1: Sadly, I have not

  • Jaffy1: Noo, I need that money to buy coffee so I can be awake at lectures. xD

  • Xena_Dragon: Not yet.

  • Speedyshel: Ummm....maybe....maybe not... nope

  • Juhnie: No. D:

  • Matthew: There's a Tip.It shop?

  • Tecmaster532: Nope

[/hide]

[hide=Q: When applying for a job, do you include the fact that you moderate/crewbierate such a big forum/website in your CV? Has anyone ever received a special comment towards it?]

  • lalala7324: I've never included it... should I start?

  • Vulxai: I actually did once. It didn't help, but I did put it on.

  • Shelby_Polo: I haven't done it myself, but I probably will eventually and I've heard of other staff who have.

  • Tim: I dont add the part about Tip.It itself within my CV, but I do use the knowledge I gained like HTML Coding and Photoshop, which gained me brownie points for my current job.

  • All_Bogs: I would certainly mention it.

  • Mil: Helping out and contributing to such a great site is really helpful. I'm sure it's over exaggerated, but for applications and so on, saying you volunteer your time and skills to help maintain, manage, and develop such a huge website (that's also quite popular ) can look really quite good. It's quite out of the ordinary, but I guess you could touch upon it improving your communication skills (working with many people you have never met), management skills, computer skills, and also how it opens a huge variety of opportunities.

  • zaaps1: It's a good idea and when the time comes that might be a card I will play, but in the past I didn't need to mention it.

  • Jaffy1: Nope, I teach English next to my studies for the time being, and my credentials for that are already more than sufficient. I don't think I ever will as it's not really relevant in the fields I work in.

  • Xena_Dragon: Yes, I do. Being a crew member (for a longer period of time) shows you are able to work in a team, and depending on your area of expertise it shows your writing skills in english, or your web development skills in writing code or html. In the IT world, that's a big plus.

  • wyvren2000: Well I have yet to actually apply for a job, but I did make brief mention of it on college applications.

  • Speedyshel: I haven't sent in a job application since I've been working with Tip.it...I think that's a good thing right? :P

  • Matthew: I've never applied for a job that required any web development mentioning, so no, not yet.

  • Tecmaster532: I haven't yet although I might have to do that now...

[hide=Q: Is everyone's main language english?]

  • Vulxai: Yes it is, we're all fluent in Bovine, so we can understand the Crew Leader/Admin

  • Shelby_Polo: My main and only language is English

  • Tim: Well.... Cowman has Moo'ing-Tongue, but mine is English.

  • All_Bogs: Mine isn't.

  • zaaps1: My mother language is technically Chinese, and I can speak it fairly well, so I suppose that could be my main language. But I just know so much more English that I often consider English as my "main language" and Chinese just as my "mother language".

  • Jaffy1: My first language is Dutch, my second English, and my third German. I also know a few dialects.

  • Xena_Dragon: Nope. I'm Dutch, and there's a Smörgåsbord of other languages around. When we talk, it's all in english though.

  • wyvren2000: Onay, ymay ainmay anguagelay isway Igpay Atinlay. Actuallyway onay Iway amway ustjay iddingkay, itsway Englishway. (No, my main language is Pig Latin. Actually no I am just kidding, its English)

  • Speedyshel: My main language is English, not sure everyone's main language is though.

  • Juhnie: Nope, we're a very international team. ;) English is actually my third language after Finnish and Swedish. :)

  • Matthew: Nope! Plenty of us from different countries.

  • Tecmaster532: Mine is, not sure about everyone else.

[/hide]

[hide=Q: why are the crew so awesome?]

  • lalala7324: The crew is generally selected based on willingness to contribute positively to the community, so being awesome just comes along with it.

  • Vulxai: Only the Awesome can serve on Crew. It's part of the requirements.

  • Shelby_Polo: We can't discuss our secret in public, but I think you all ready know ;-)

  • Tim: Because I am the physical form of awesomeness. :shades:

  • All_Bogs: Because we eat our cabbage.

  • zaaps1: It's like 2+2, it just is.

  • Vhellcat: Because Sir Kay said so:
    SirKayawesome.png
Well, he said I was at least!

  • Howlin0001: Because Purple is the new black.

  • Cowman_133: Because I make amazing pancakes.

  • Xena_Dragon: Because we keep getting such great feedback from you all. It helps us doing our very very best

  • Speedyshel: I was gonna ask the same. You beat me to it :P

  • Juhnie: Because

  • Matthew: Cause I'm in it ;)

[/hide]

[hide=Q: is there really a pool in the Tip.it Crew lounge?]

  • Vulxai: Yes, and every other awesome thing you can imagine...plus a cow.

  • Shelby_Polo: No… there's a hot-tub :shades:

  • All_Bogs: There used to be, but it was taken over by an alien and a predator.
    alien-predator-pool-20090426-124652.jpg

  • zaaps1: All_Bogs got this one.

  • Howlin0001: No (plus we don't even get a lounge :( )

  • Cowman_133: Due to the lack of hired pool boys, the water over time has become a deep yellow and I don't know anything about it.

  • Xena_Dragon: I dunno, they won't let me out of the shed...

  • wyvren2000: Well, technically speaking yes, however we dont use it often due to the fact that its been filled with industrial waste ever since the garbage can got filled.

  • Speedyshel: Let me ask.....Cowman, is there a pool here? I don't speak cow, so I'm not sure what he said.

  • Juhnie: I haven't discovered it yet, but the rumor is that it's hidden behind Da Vinci Code-like protection.

  • Matthew: If there is, they're hiding it from me....

  • Tecmaster532: Maybe...

[/hide]

[hide=Q: If you could change one thing with the tip.it forums, what would it be?]

  • All_Bogs: They're fine, really. Although sometimes the thing that indicates what I've read and what not seems to act a bit wonky.

  • Shelby_Polo: I would make my forum name a red-orange color.

  • Xena_Dragon: I would make it have a 100% up-time.

  • Speedyshel: I've never thought about it, I think with the recent update there's a bunch of new features that make me uber happy. No complaints from me.

  • Juhnie: I pretty much like them as they are. :)

  • Matthew: To get rid of this cheesy emote

  • Tecmaster532: Not sure really, they're great already!

[/hide]

[hide=Q: If you could get one thing from jagex, what would it be?]

  • Jaffy1: Ownership of RuneScape of course!

  • All_Bogs: I heard they have pretty cool military vehicles.

  • Shelby_Polo: Website: a few formulas
    Runescape: money ;)

  • Xena_Dragon: A compliment for the entire tip.it staff.

  • wyvren2000: Data for Project C.A.M.P. which unfortunately got canceled due to a lack of response from site users.

  • Speedyshel: An explanation on why they updated every image in game.

  • Juhnie: Infinite Membership. It's so inconvenient to get.

  • Matthew: A "Thanks for wasting away your childhood years playing our game!" letter in the mail.

  • Tecmaster532: A job :P

[/hide]

[hide=Q: If you could change one thing ingame what would it be?]

  • Jaffy1: I would remove player mods. Although there are some great people among them, there's simply too many of them that abuse the trust given to them.

  • All_Bogs: I'd bomb Shantay's pass into oblivion. Probably not the one thing I'd change, but still.

  • Shelby_Polo: Higher-level content for Farming.

  • Xena_Dragon: I would add mounts and a riding skill (or whatever you'd call it).

  • wyvren2000: Let me think... My character into a dragon. and to answer why, I personally just really really like dragons.

  • Speedyshel: My Construction level :D

  • Juhnie: I would reverse some of the most controversial updates.

  • Matthew: Allow the GE to hold more than 6 items.

  • Tecmaster532: Probably the ability to morph your character into random monsters and NPC's. I would love to run around RS as Nomad scaring people. :P

[/hide]

[hide=Q: why do you choose to spend your time on tip.it, rather than irl?]

  • Jaffy1: They can be combined :shades:

  • All_Bogs: It's not really a concious choice of not doing something irl so I can do tip.it stuff. If I wasn't doing any site work I'd probably just be snoozing on the couch or something :P

  • Shelby_Polo: I'm outside a lot (well not so much in the winter), but if I'm inside, then I'm on my computer, and if I'm on my computer, I'm on tip.it/RS.

  • Xena_Dragon: I like to spend time on tip.it *and* irl. Why choose if you can have both?

  • wyvren2000: What is this real life you speak of? well anyways, its a way to actually accomplish something constructive when I'm not at classes, playing Dungeons and Dragons, Dungeon mastering Dungeons & Dragons, or going to a variety of free activities.

  • Speedyshel: I have always had an interest in both gaming and coding. I don't let Tip.it neglect my RL needs when they arise, though.

  • Juhnie: The awesome people on the Forums and in the Crew must be the reason.

  • Matthew: Web development, and the coding processes that come with it have always been a passion of mine. I spend a lot of time with my fiancé, but I also set aside time to do my job as Crew.

  • Tecmaster532: I guess because it's something that I enjoy doing, not that I don't spend time irl.

[/hide]

[hide=Q: what is your biggest mistake / best decision on tip.it?]

  • All_Bogs: Dunno. Having a great time as crew member, so I suppose responding to a crew draft years back.

  • Xena_Dragon: My biggest mistake was breaking tip.it's development server in my first week on crew. My best decision was actually sending in my application to become a crew member.

  • wyvren2000: Project C.A.M.P. would fit both as it was a great concept to try, but it was a bad decision due to the prior guesses at its fate.

  • Speedyshel: My best decision on Tip.it was joining crew because it's an absolute blast working with a team that shares my same interests. Biggest mistake....thankfully I hadn't come across that one.

  • Juhnie: Best decision: sending in my Crew Application in the last recruitment drive.
Biggest mistake: trying to steal from the Admins' cookie jar.

  • Matthew: Biggest mistake was taking on such a big job the moment I joined. Best decision? Joining the team!

  • Tecmaster532: Best decision would have to be joining the website crew, biggest mistake was probably breaking the dungeoneering guide by mistake and having to spend about 2 hours fixing it again.

[/hide]

[hide=Q: what is the ultimate topic on tif?]

  • Shelby_Polo: The ultimate topic is somewhere in here.

  • Xena_Dragon: The staff quotes thread. Nothing beats quoting fellow staff members out of context. And no, it's not for public view. :shame:

  • wyvren2000: If I revealed its contents to you I would have to kill you, but it was my personal notes for the operation of Project C.A.M.P.

  • Speedyshel: For me, it's Website Updates & Corrections haha

  • Juhnie: Countdown from 15k!@!

  • Matthew: Our Daily Polka topic =D

  • Tecmaster532: Probably something in website updates and corrections.

[/hide]

[hide=Q: what is the feature you'd like the most on tip.it, if there were no constraints?]

  • Shelby_Polo: A user suggested a 'My page' idea in website discussion; I think that would be really awesome, but also unrealistic for Tip.it :o

  • Xena_Dragon: If there were no constraints at all, I'd like to integrate the site and the game completely. Click on a quest guide and teleport to Falador, or run the equipment builder using items found in your bank box. Stuff like that would be awesome to have.

  • wyvren2000: The feature I would most like to create would have been the series of calculators I had planned based on the Project C.A.M.P. concept.

  • Speedyshel: I've gotta admit, I don't think too much about what I don't have on TIF. Always just made do with what's already there lol.

  • Matthew: To keep it as a light weight site. Keeping it from being bloated with un-needed styling like some other fan sites have become.

  • Tecmaster532: For me it would have to be constantly updated strategy information for all types of monster hunting. At the moment though that would be impossible to keep updated by our crew alone.

[/hide]

[hide=Q: why don't you write a couple of pieces for the tip.it times?!]

  • Jaffy1: Is lack of time a good enough excuse?

  • All_Bogs: I'm not really good at writing entertaining things in English. Plus, I'm a bit behind on RuneScape content still.

  • Shelby_Polo: I'm not much of an essay type writing person :-?

  • wyvren2000: I have entertained the idea of writing a series of articles about runescape, and MMORPG's in general, however the start of the samples I wrote seemed far too much like technical documentation to serve for any sort of public article so they never got far (I only have a few paragraphs of one saved on my computer at home) and I really didn't want to appear to know too much about the game (I had issues a few years ago with people ingame thinking that I was a Jmod's personal account due to the fact that I would actually look up answers to questions on tip.it or the game manual)

  • Speedyshel: Writing long narratives or articles is not really my strong point. If you want me to write you a mathematical equation, let me know :)

  • Juhnie: I sent one in a while ago, but with my pro(awful) writing skills it didn't get in. Yet, at least. :P

  • Matthew: I spent my entire highschool career writing for my newspaper. I didn't need to continue it afterwards :)

  • Tecmaster532: There's a big difference between the kind of writing we do as crew and the kind of writing the tip.it times writers do. I'm not really all that good at the tip.it times kind. :-?

[/hide]

[hide=Q: Do you guys actually enjoy moderating the forums, etc?]

  • Jaffy1: Of course! Why else do it?

  • All_Bogs: The only thing crew moderates are user submissions. User submission improve the site. Improving the site makes me happy. So in a way I do, I guess.

  • Shelby_Polo: It's alright

  • Xena_Dragon: It's the main reason I am on the team. The moment I stop enjoying it, I will quit.

  • Speedyshel: It's a lot of fun - I truly do enjoy it!

  • Juhnie: Of course! :D

  • Matthew: Don't have to! =D

  • Tecmaster532: Would I be here if I didn't?

[/hide]

[hide=Q: How involved are you in other fansites? Do you guys ever get involved with Zybez, Sal's, RuneScape Community, Etc?]

  • All_Bogs: I'm not involved with other fansites, though I used to read RuneScape Community back when all the big clans did their thing over there. I do contribute to RS Wikia occasionally.

  • Shelby_Polo: I'm not very involved with other sites; unless tet declared war on one

  • Xena_Dragon: I sometimes lend a (technical) hand at UO Stratics. It's a fan site about an on-line game I used to play in the past.

  • wyvren2000: I cant remeber any time that I've been directly responsible for any corrections with another fansite, though I believe I am indirectly responsible for atleast parts of the RuneWiki article on the Stone of Jas.

  • Speedyshel: I've never been involved with another fansite other than Tip.it.

  • Juhnie: Tip.It is my one and only love fansite.

  • Matthew: I don't personally, and as far as I know you can't be on another sites staff. I could be wrong though.

  • Tecmaster532: I mainly stay on tip.it and the RSOF, between those and real life my time is in demand enough as it is.

[/hide]

[hide=Q: If runescape ever died Where would you all run off to?]

  • Jaffy1: I would run to the wonderful world of denial.

  • All_Bogs: There's a lot of games out there, y'know.

  • Shelby_Polo: Starcraft 2

  • Xena_Dragon: I'd probably find another mmorpg. I hear there are plenty available.

  • Speedyshel: I'd probably have to join this thing I've heard about called real life. It's apparently pretty awesome! On a more serious note, I'd probably just have even more time to spend on other hobbies like racing R/C cars or playing Ultimate Frisbee.

  • Juhnie: Hills.
    RUN TO THE HIIILLS

  • Matthew: Continue playing WoW like I currently do.

  • Tecmaster532: Probably back to that old game RealLifeScape.

[/hide]

[hide=Q: Why do you stay active on these boards. In other words, what allures you here?]

  • Shelby_Polo: Hmm, probably just the fact that I've been using Tip.it, the fansite, since I started playing RS.

  • wyvren2000: Hmm... well I started with Tip.it when I first began playing runescape 5 or so years ago and haven't left since then, as its an excellent community and I've rarely had any problems and those were only indirectly related to tip.it.

  • Speedyshel: I remain active on Tip.it because it's one of my interests - coding / gaming.

  • Juhnie: All the great people <3

  • Matthew: I suppose because Cowman makes me :(

[/hide]

[hide=Q: What's your favorite sport, or are we all stereotypical geeks/nerds with no athletic prowess?]

  • Jaffy1: Volleyball and squash.

  • All_Bogs: I like cycling, though only when the weather's good. I also enjoy watching football.

  • Shelby_Polo: I'm into a lot of sports: Ultimate frisbee, bike polo, cycling, hockey, badminton, croquet and racquetball (all of which I really do play). I also like watching pro hockey, baseball and football.

  • Xena_Dragon: No sports for me. I'm a geek, and proud of it. :shades:

  • wyvren2000: Does Dungeons and Dragons count?

  • Speedyshel: I play Ultimate Frisbee A LOT thank you very much. :P

  • Juhnie: World hopping.
No, seriously talking, table tennis, basketball, swimming.

  • Matthew: was in hockey and (American) football during highschool. Still the only two sports I watch :P Vikings and Red Wings ftw!

  • Tecmaster532: Probably soccer (or football for those of you outside the US)

[/hide]

[hide=Q: How fast do you type? Years of working on Tipit must make you amazing typists, correct?]

  • All_Bogs: I don't really pay attention to it. I googled up a typing test, which had fairly annoying [cabbage] like quotes and names in the text, and came out at 84 wpm.

  • Shelby_Polo: Honestly, I type fast, but probably not as fast as a lot of other users.

  • Xena_Dragon: Fast enough to not lose my train of thoughts as I type

  • wyvren2000: My personal record is 2,500,000 WPM (in microsoft office only), other than that I dont actually know how fast I type exactly

  • Speedyshel: No idea what my speed is. I think my typing ability came more from having to type tons of research papers and essays in school. Only took me 47 seconds to answer this question, new record!

  • Juhnie: I've always been quite a fast typer, so I don't really know has Crew work had an effect on mine. :P

  • Matthew: I've been quite a quick typer for years, but I've never actually tested out my actual WPM.

  • Tecmaster532: I haven't measured in a while but I think I'm somewhere around 80 wpm.

This image shows the core part of every update: an update topic! Above is a completed update topic from September 07, 2010. An update topic is created by the Crew Leader and delegates all the work for that update to all the Crewbies that are needed for that particular update. This one is a medium sized update. Some updates, like Dungeoneering, often take several topics and tons of massive posts to accomplish.

Did You Know

  • DaDieselDude05 - I went to the same high school as two prominent Tip.it members.
  • Opeth - Cowman is a bot.
  • Wyvren2000 - There used to be a position within crew for performing in-depth in-game research, which had tested subjects ranging from running to shop prices. This separate position was eventually phased out and research returned to being only duties under other positions.
  • Xena_Dragon - It sometimes takes more time to properly test a change in our code than it took to apply the change?
  • Georgelemmons - I'm the fastest crewbie. (if you dispute this, race me).
  • lalala7324 - I have an X Box 360, but I never play it when I'm at home because my dad plays it all the time, and when I try to play, he says "Come back when you're providing for the family." Jerk. So I started playing lots of scape while watching him play Oblivion on the 360.
  • All_Bogs - You can't install older versions of Internet Explorer on a machine that is already running Internet Explorer 8. To properly test if things work on older versions of IE, you need to run a virtual machine and download a vm image that is several gigabytes in size from the microsoft website.
  • Speedyshel - I had finished the long-requested Stealing Creation calculator, but testing revealed some of the tools grant different XP based on a player's skill level - back to the drawing board I suppose. :P
  • Cowman_133 - All Crew communicate together in one big chat day and night, weekend and weekday to ensure everything is done orderly?
  • Juhnie - Updates made to guides are added the site with a delay, because they must be checked by a Senior Crew member before they go live?
  • Tim - I am actually a entity of darkness? Each night I prey upon unsuspecting forum browsers, wait until their guard is down and then BAM! I smash through a window, grab their head, ram it to the computer monitor and say "Fool! Why aren't you browsing Tip.It?!?" How did you think we got so many members? :-w
  • Codguy - I'm a Zoology major at my University, and work at a Zoo. Wonder where I get my interest in the Bestiary, huh?
  • Jaffy1 - I passed my math exams by fishing on RuneScape? I hate math, and that's what gave me an excuse to study.
  • Howlin0001 - Out of the group of people who came onto the Crew the same time as I did. I am the last one still on the Crew :(
  • Vhellcat - Most people forget to put their name in the Credits box when submitting a correction. We have a lot of helpful anonymous players!

You all smell. <3:

It's not as bad now since you left. <3:

That's actually just the smell of your rotting Eevee.

You know that April Fools only lasts for one day... in April... right?[/size]

I nearly died laughing when I read this. I think Howlin's just early for 2011, not late.

We miss you too Serpy  How about coming back eh?
