A thread about something nice

Featured Replies

I'm not making this to be nice. I'm making this to beat Adam's challenge. Basically, the premise of this thread is to combat all the negative nelly threads floating around holiday season, by talking about things which are nice. What are some random acts of kindness you do, and why do you do them? I'll start:

A random act of kindness I did was sit next to an old man on a bus, because he looked lonely, and had a [bleep]ing awesome beard. We had a chat, which ended up him telling me about his life. I was told not to join the navy.

Who cares if that was incessantly positive and overwhelmingly nice? Share your stories anyway!

(but because of the depressive nature of OT I expect this topic to die after two pages...)

I found $21+ on the ground and was nice enough to not pick it up and leave it for someone of greater need to take it.

Okay that's a lie. I'm actually really stupid because my first instinct upon seeing $21 on the ground was to look at it, go "Omg cool!" and walk away without picking it up. Then I stopped 5 steps later, asked myself "Why didn't I pick that up?" and turn around just in time to see someone else grabbing it.

How about something nice that someone else did for me? I live in the dorms at university. Someone I don't know who lives on my hall made me a little Christmas stocking, pinned it to my door and filled it with candy and a note wishing me a merry Christmas ^_^

I was in the waiting room at a hospital with a badly damaged arm and it was like 9PM and this little boy and his very tired mum sat next to me and the boy wouldn't stop moving around and his mum was getting pretty fed up with it so I sat there and spoke with him until I went in to get an x-ray.

That's probably not the right kind of candy. :ohnoes:

Well, people think I'm crazy for doing this, and it has been a little unnerving in the past, but every so often when I'm driving and see a homeless person, I'll drive to the nearest store/grocery store, buy a few goodies (trail mix, bottled water, Gatorade, etc.) and drive back and give it to the homeless person.

One time, I did this near our Target store, but by the time I got back to the corner he was at, he had left... I then spent the next 30 minutes driving around town looking for him, WHICH, I'm happy to say... I eventually did find him again!! I think I freaked him out because I pulled my car over and shouted "I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR YOU!!" out of my window at him...

I've also (this has been the scary part, haha) let a few homeless people into the back seat of my car before... I drove through Taco Bell one night for this homeless lady trying to order food at the drive-thru, and I drove these homeless brother and sister through McDonald's, bought them each a burger, fries and shake, and then drove them to their next "pit stop."

I don't know... like I said, it is maybe a little insane of me, but it makes me feel really, really good, knowing that I genuinely helped someone in need.

To be honest, I don't really recall anything I did that was "nice" in recent times... that is if you're talking about the helping others in need kind of thing.

With that out of the question, whenever people want to play a game in the gym at lunchtime break, I always try to join. It doesn't hurt to join in whatever they are doing, right?

If you get murdered, at least you'll know you were trying to do something nice.

I think the most recent act of kindness I did was yesterday when a girl I don't really know forgot a piece of equipment, the teacher was going bloody nuts because loads of people were in the same situation. Giving punishment work and whatnot so I took out a 2nd folder and slipped it to her so she didn't get in trouble. :P

John has the hots for her.

Same, I do stuff like open doors, pick up anything dropped, lend anything etc but nothing too great. Never really had the chance too though...

By fix her shower, he also means work on her plumbing ;)

...in other, more positive news, I've been volunteering to work with underprivileged preschool children for about 6 hours a week.

...and back to negative news, those children make me sick <_<

(literally. I've been sick for the past few days because they haven't learned to cover their mouths when they cough yet)

Something nice that I recently did? I cooked up a decent sized meal for a homeless person yesterday just because I can, and he was genuinely hungry. Bangers and mash, with gravy.

I held a door open for many people to pass through. It's nice just hearing 'thankyou' since these small acts of common courtesy don't seem very common nowadays.

Does it have to be something recent?

Last summer (2009) I went to New York City with three other friends. On the way to a museum a homeless couple came up to us asking for food; I assume they came to us because we looked like obvious tourists :P . The man said his wife was pregnant and they hadn't eaten in days. So we told them we could buy them some groceries, but we didn't know where any markets were. The five of us walked trying to find something and we ended up going to a subway. We all ate some footlongs, talked a bit and went on our way; we also gave them like $15 in food money. It felt nice to help them out and eat/talk with strangers.

Eh. I want to do this, but I don't find it safe. I'd love to give them money, but I never do. Why? Because every time I have, I've seen them a later with a jug of alcohol in their hands, and a sign saying "need food." I'm not going to support a habit :\

I don't do it to get thanked. It's just being polite for the sake of it.

Neither do I, I wasn't arguing that part of the sentence, merely the fact they tend to not say thank you.

Today;

I made lunch for my parents.

I stepped in this really big snowbank (which I had jumped over to get across) to help and old lady get off the city bus.

I didn't drive my friend's face through the drywall when he started talking about his ex girlfriend (again).
