Tim
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/yasi/8205337/its-too-late-to-flee-from-yasi-authoritiesIt's too late to get out of the path of the life-threatening Cyclone Yasi, which is powering towards the north Queensland coast with wind gusts as high as 290km/h. Authorities are now telling residents in the impact zone the time for evacuating is over and they must "seek shelter wherever they are". WATCH: Time lapse of Yasi's path MAP: Areas under threat The category five tropical cyclone is expected to hit the coast between Innisfail and Cardwell at 10pm tonight. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said people in the path of the storm should now have positioned themselves in a place of safety. PHOTOS: Bracing for Yasi NEWSWATCH: Are you in the cyclone zone? Tell us what it's like, or share images and video with us here."No one should be leaving home now," Ms Bligh told reporters at 2pm. "The time for movement and evacuation has now passed. "People should be sheltering wherever they are." Residents are being told they may be on their own for up to 24 hours, with category three storm conditions to remain 12 hours after Yasi crosses the coast. State disaster management coordinator Ian Stewart said people needed to realise they may have to fend for themselves during the cyclone and should take their own safety very seriously. "Even in a life threatening situation when someone's ringing up triple-0 and they're suffering a life-threatening emergency, a judgement call has to be made at that time as to whether emergency services personnel can actually attend," he said. "Because their lives will be just as in danger as the people making the call and that is the practical reality of what our emergency services personnel face." He said people might be unable to go outside until as late as midday on Thursday because of the wild winds. Ms Bligh has urged people to add their names to the official record of evacuees to ensure police do not waste time looking for missing people who were in fact safe. Only 4000 people have registered so far despite 10,680 people bunkering down in 20 evacuation centres across Cairns. Ms Bligh said people should prepare for power outages with 3000 people already losing power at Airlie Beach due to high winds. "We expect that the number of customers coming off electricity will escalate dramatically over the next couple of hours as those wind gusts really start to accelerate," she said. Ms Bligh said Yasi had moved into the Bureau of Meteorology's (BOM) Cairns radar after knocking out a weather monitoring station at Willis Island. "The bureau continues to hold grave concerns about the strength of this system for some time after it crosses the coast," she said. "It's anticipated that towns like Mt Surprise, Georgetown, Einasleigh, and Croydon could all see serious cyclonic conditions from quite early tomorrow morning," she said. "This system could still be at a category three system and hit Georgetown at about 7am tomorrow morning." BOM will provide hourly updates on the cyclone's progress, which can be viewed on the bureau's website. Ms Bligh warned that the incredible intensity of the storm meant category three conditions could continue to be felt for about 12 hours after it crosses the coast. The premier said Australians worried about family and friends in north Queensland should know the state was doing everything possible to prepare. "We intend to be there from the very minute that it is possible to be there to make sure that we can keep people as safe as possible in these very difficult circumstances," she said. "To all of those in their homes ... you are now in the thoughts of every Australian and I hope that you feel that as a great strength in the many hours that are ahead of you." Vex
Townsville is where I lived and grew up for 7 years. (Back in the UK now for a while) http://www.ustream.tv/channel/test222223435432e Stream of storm chasers car Live Video Stream from apartment in Townsville CBD Trying to keep regular contact with my friends there, but power will probably go soon, about an hour until the eye hits, It's also hitting at high tide, so the swells are HUGE. 10m + low areas will be instantly flooded from storm surges and this is the biggest danger. The 1st link will be pretty intense EDIT: Apparantly it's moving slower now, so it won't reach land at high tide, which is a lot better for the storm surges, but means the winds will be over the towns for longer. http://www.[Caution! [cabbage] just got real. Luckily enough for me I barely dodged the storm. Oh no, not a little snow. How will they ever get around now? Who'da thunk that winter = snow? You don't have a clue how bad the roads get here if snow comes in. The area I live in has roads already treacherous enough as it is, and ice basically means you aren't going anywhere, even with a vehicle equipped specifically for it, unless it's a salt truck or something. And being a smartass isn't helping. I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal. OPEN WIDE HERE COMES THE HELICOPTER. [cabbage] just got real. Luckily enough for me I barely dodged the storm. The winter storm in the US wasn't too bad-- at least where I live. It just rained a lot and -4C temperatures froze the water. Luckily it was also very windy, so the majority of the water dried off the roads. There were some snow flurries, but none of it really stuck to the ground. I was on the periphery of the storm by the way. Not too far away from where I live, the storm was severe. SWAG Mayn U wanna be like me but U can't be me cuz U ain't got ma swagga on.
