Slayer making money?

LitterBug

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty new to members - and I've been reading up a few guides/forums to get myself acquainted.

I find this really strange - people keep saying that slayer is a good money maker as well as a good way to train combat.

This doesn't make much sense to me - if you really wanted money/exp, wouldn't it make more sense to just camp one monster instead of running around killing x amount of monsters, go to a slayer master to get a new assignment and then move onto your next job.

Even with lunar spells (npc contanct) and all your teleports/etc, I don't see how doing slayer tasks would beat an unmitigated camping of a slayer monster.

TL/DR-

Why not just stay at a slayer monster as opposed to getting new tasks?

New task = travel time =? less money/exp?

The slayer xp makes it better total xp/hour then just camping, but you are correct that if you're just looking for specific combat xp, then camping a monster is better.

The same goes for money.

The only thing to consider is this...if you ever start training slayer in the future, you would have been better off training it sooner then later.

^That makes a lot more sense.

After all - slayer is a pretty hard skill to get to lvl 99 (Congrats on that btw :P)

I was just a little confused was all - at first, I figured it might have to do with the increased damage % that the slayer helm provides but I figure that

a.) It wasn't that much if you have to waste a lot of time running around/changing inventories

b.) While slayer monsters do generally have great charm rates & amazing as well as limited to slayer monster only drops, I figure there must be a few tasks that are just horrendously difficult in that they either yield [cabbage]ty exp or very few drops or drops that don't sell

That's what the abilities to block and cancel tasks are for :D

On the best tasks you can almost match the max off task xp. You beat the charm+money drop rate however. Over time it is slower xp/charms/money then camping.

DK drops (solo/LS): 66 hatchets, 14 archer rings, 13 berserker rings, 17 warrior rings, 12 seerculls, 13 mud staves, 7 seers rings

QBD drops: 1 kite, 2 visages, 4 dragonbone kits, 3 effigies, lots of crossbow parts

CR vs. CLS threads always turn into discussions about penis size.
...
It's not called a Compensation Longsword for nothing.

I've sent a 12k combat mission to have Aiel assassinated (poor bastard isn't even Pincers-tier difficulty).

The black mask is a huge boon, but yeah, overall for straight money you're better off camping off task.

However, a lot of people (myself included) find slayer more fun because you do a LOT more damage, and get to mix up the scenery every ~hour. You might find yourself hooked if you try it out. It's also a really awesome skill cape.

Personally I enjoy slayer because of the variety. As far as money making with monster killing, it isn't the best. You're right about being able to camp 'x' monster for better money. (For high levels: Frost dragons, Tormented demons, and God wars dungeon come to mind.) Besides the variety slayer also allows you to kill monsters that not just everyone with high combat has access to... Lower level slayers will find that cave crawlers ,with a good set-up and access to fairy rings, allow them to camp for herb drops (similar to the very crowded chaos druids). At medium levels (65) you unlock one of the better crimson charm droppers for those with lower combats (talking about dust devils).

All that aside, I have lots of friends who dislike slayer for some reason or another, and have maxed out using other methods. It all boils down to the player, I think. I personally enjoy skills>combat so I enjoy being able to level something in addition to combat skills. Anyways, good luck on members, and I hope that I could provide you with some incite on why some people choose to slay and others do not.

Thanks everybody for the help!

I'm definitely going to train slayer. In fact after I get that bonecrusher - I'm going to camp hill giants for some good prayer/combat ratio and more importantly charms. After I get a decent amount to up my summoning level, I'll be training combat via slayer from then on. I was just confused as why everybody said train slayer as a means to make money/level up stats.

Green, can you give me an estimate of how long you spent getting that slayer cape?

Maybe a "X hours for Y months" or something along that line?

Thanks for your time again guys! :P

Might want to skip slayer directly.Hill giants mostly drop golds which are poor summoning xp.It's crimsons/blues you're looking for.

As for the time spent it really depends how you train slayer.Max efficiency(cannon/rapier/turmoil/overloads/steel titan) or just normal slaying with extremes/super pots.

Let's just say it'll keep you busy for quite a while.

It took me a few years, but I started when I was ~95 combat (pre summoning) and took many breaks and trained many other skills during that time. It's impossible for me to give an estimate for how long just the cape would have taken without any other stuff going on. Slayer's not really a skill that many people grind from 1-99 like that, it's more like a long ongoing project for most people I know. Get bored, do slayer task, then maybe go do something else.

dont get bonecrusher, its COMPLETELY worthless for prayer training. just make money with slayer and buy dragon/frost bones and use them at a lit gilded altar.

Well theres a few extra things that slayer gives over camping that make it more worthwhile in my opinion. You mentioned the Slayer Helm, which is going to help you get faster xp. The point system also makes you money, every two tasks with Kuradel and you can buy 250 deaths and 1000 minds. Slayer makes things alot less boring when it comes down to combat training, more variety=less boredom.

You do know that if you do smoking kills you can start collecting slayer points to trade for death runes. 99 slayer will get you enough points for about 40m worth of death runes. This is aside from any drops you get along the way.

Bottom line, don't waste points on canceling tasks.

Personally, I profit from just about every task I take and I always use super sets/piety 100% of the time.

If you're new to members, it'll give you a good sense of the world around you as well as some neat drops and more fun so you're not grinding away at cows for days on end.

I find enjoyment tackling task after task all over Runescape. If I get bored of Slayer, which I usually never do, I go do a quest or two, skill, etc. Variety is the spice of life so I would suggest slayer but this is my personal opinion.

slayer is so boring, and i've never gotten a good drop from it either. By good drop i mean over 100k

Count in the little drops. Like herbs from Sceptres, Alch items, THAT's where Slayer profit is.

I agree with ezee. Cancelling slow tasks for more enjoyable/profitable ones is worth a lot more than runes. I never purchased runes once between around 70-99 although had occasionally before that because I didn't have much to cancel.

Boring is relative, so that's your opinion. But as to the drops comment...you're only 66 slayer, the really good tasks don't come until you can get Kuradel as your master. I frequently get blue drag tasks which are 6k (dbones) per kill plus good amount of green charms and chances for all kinds of things (got 2.5M off a clue from them last task). So yeah, it's not like you can expect a set of d legs every task (got some last steel task btw) but those smaller drops at like 5-10k each really build up much quicker then the large drops ever do.

Everyone that's posted pretty much sums it up nicely. It's the little drops that add up to big profits (and if you get some rare drops, i.e whips, that just continues to add to your profit) and you can't forget effigies. In whoever's guide about effigies said that slayer is the best option to get them unless you already have 99 slayer.

EDIT: AND you train a minimum of 3 skills (Hp, atk/str/def and slayer, could be more if you train on controlled)

Finally on here to update that I have officially quit! It's been fun.

This, so much. If you're new to members, definitely slay. It brought me to so many new places around RS, really gets you into the member section of the world

On top of what everyone else is saying, higher slayer opens up more opportunities for money. Ex. 85 for whips, 83 for dragon boots etc. I'd imagine the time I'm putting in to getting 85 slayer to allow myself to camp Abby demons is much better spent than the time I'd spend camping some other monotonous creature for meager drops.
