Possibilty of RS voice chat?

Featured Replies

http://services.runescape.com/m=news/new-poll--voice-chat

We know that a lot of you use voice chat while playing RuneScape, and we’d like to find out more about how and why you use it. Our new poll focuses on what you love, as well as what you don’t. Your answers will help us with our research into different chat options for the game, so make sure you get involved.

Voice chat gives you the opportunity to communicate with others using a microphone or headset rather than having to type when you’re online. There are a variety of voice chat programs that host servers and channels dedicated to different purposes whether organising tactics in games or chatting to your friends all over the world.

Do you use voice chat? Let us know. If you don’t use voice chat, make sure you use this opportunity to tell us that you don’t. Every voice counts, after all.

To vote in the latest poll, click here. If you’d like to comment on this poll or leave us some feedback, head over to the New Poll - Voice Chat thread in our official forums.

Clan leaders got a message around a month ago asking about it.

Why use a RS Voicechat method when we've already got Teamspeak, Ventrilo, Skype etcetera?

Look at the Runescape Client and look at SwiftKit.

That's my prediction of their voicechat compared to a previously mentioned method.

EDIT: Also, there are still polls where you have to login to vote? Where'd those go?

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Probably wont be able to compete with things like Skype but it will be good for those who don't have Skype for whatever reason.

have you ever been in a chat with 5 or more people? its impossible to hear anything. people are always competing for attention or spouting jokes then u have people with family talking n background. Its a big mess lol.

Wow we got multiple voting options..! 0_0

Um.. it would need to basically be restricted to clan chats and then those in control of the clan chats would have ultimate control with same ability to assign others with certain powers. Plus also friends list but again we need to be able to allow someone else to use voice or not. Possibly with ability to invite others into the voice environment.

I doubt they are capable of making it work properly so probably best this isnt put into the game. I would probably use it sometimes though.. but always in more quiet clans that either empty or heavily restricted.

I would thought something like that would use up bandwidth.

I do dungeoneering with 4 other people in voice chat and it's usually not hard to have a decent conversation and still call doors. Maybe you are chatting with that wrong group of people, possibly younger kids?

Yeh. Also, I use Skype so this won't have as much impact on me.

Still, getting to hear random people's voice sounds a bit exciting.

Will be interesting. Like someone already said though, RS's own client still can't compete with SwiftKit. I doubt a voice chat provided by Jagex will be able to compete with established tools such ask Ventrillo, Teamspeak, and Skype.

Not to say this isn't a move in the right direction though. It is another area for Jagex to explore.

Edit: Wouldn't it be cheaper for Jagex to just enter into a form of partnership with an established voice communication software company (Such as Teamspeak)? It would save research and development costs leading to more content updates and pretty much make it simpler for both Jagex and its already established player base.

I think its a crappy idea, people can use skype/vent if they want theres no reason to put a worse version of it in rs. I think its just down to jagex's paranoia of players leading each other to external sites

If this happens I'm going to buy a mic, lol altho my laptop has a built in mic, kinda lame tho. I'm going to lol when there's going to be a corner of the RS screen reserved for webcam space in the near future. lolol

Hell, when I went to vote, Chrome said it was a phishing site.

I don't think I'd want it, anyway. If I need to, I can just hop over to Skype, and nine times out of ten, I don't need to.

There's a perfectly good reason why it's a good idea, you don't have to go through a complicated process of creating more than one account and using more than one program at a time, and it also establishes a common platform, so there's no incompatibility issues where one person says 'I only use skype' and another says 'I only use vent'.

Most multiplayer online games have built-in voice chat, so what makes Runescape so different?

Personally, I talk with friends on Skype daily while playing RS. It's a wonderful thing when you're Dungoneering with friends, I tell ya.

Not sure if it'll be very useful considering current voice software offer more superior features such as the ability to customize your ranks, mod channels, ban users, etc.

Just directly posting what I did in the RSOF thread

I use Skype and sometimes Windows Live Messenger.

I think Voice chat implementation would be nice, but totally unneeded. Why put time into developing voice chat, when there are already options available for free elsewhere? Especially considering when using any voice chat provided by [Jagex], not only would we be bound by [Jagex's] often times limiting rules (while with other voice chat programs, we are not), but I have a pretty rough feeling that things like link / file sharing would not be implemented with [Jagex's] system, which are vital things that [Jagex] would decide to omit.

Sounds like a waste of development time to me.

It would be pretty cool to talk to people without having to juggle multiple windows/programs.

Maybe RS could form a business partnership with skype?

Watev, in general this seems like it could work out great if Jagex could set it up properly.

Well if it bothers you that the game is more fun now, then you can go cry in a corner. :shame:

your article was the equivalent of a circumcized porcupine

The only thing wrong with it is the lack of a percentage for when you need to stroke it.

I got phishing site alert on Chrome, too.

OT: Oh sweet Jesus, it'll be like playing Halo with 12-year old MLGers. Do not want. If I wanted to voice chat, I'd use something where I know the people who I'm speaking too - that being Skype.

I can definitely see how it could be beneficial and why Jagex would consider doing it. And maybe for RuneScape, any version they come up with would suffice.. but in the end, programs like Ventrilo, etc. will almost definitely be better than what Jagex come up with. I play a few other games and although the games have voice chat built in, almost all guilds/etc. require that members download and install Ventrilo or TeamSpeak because the overall quality, customization and clarity is much, much better. But for PUGs, the in-game version is convenient.

BTW, @OP: censor should be fixed.

BTW, @OP: censor should be fixed.

thanks babe. this wont affect phising attempts tho will it? i dont mind a stricter censor if it means less hacking.

What I think might be cool is just voice chat within a fixed radius of walking, with volumes added in per distance. So for example, as I wander through lumbridge I hear people having a conversation about fishing, and then I go to the cowfields and there's people who are talking about levelling strength on pures. Just localized chat would be really cool :) .

I'm not an efficienado.

Personally i see no need for it. Skype, TS and vent are perfected, why bother adding a feature that is likely to have large issues for a while when you could simply use the available, free suited pieces of software? I only just started using Skype with IRL friends who play, and i don't see how adding an ingame chat feature would be any better, or could be.

There is also the advantage of having a seperate program for the talking, which is if you don't always use the same account, or if there are laggy servers which cause the chat to lag etc. Obviously these problems may not exist, it could even be released as a seperate downloadable client.

I understand why Jagex would do it, for people who may not trust other services, or to prevent DDoSing etc... But i don't honestly believe it is necessary. If you don't accept calls from people you don't know or trust on Skype then you will be fine. Also, it only takes 2 seconds to see that Skype, TS and Vent are widely trusted and reliable programs.

Eh, leave it to other companies imo. Perhaps provide links for users from the RS website, giving people official and trusted links?
