uber_dad
My nephew recently got ripped off by a real life friend of his. He's 9, and must have thought he could trust his friend with his password. I've tried to tell him about tip.it and to read up on all the things that are illegal, like account sharing, etc, but he's 9, and doesn't listen. Anyway, so he logs in one day and finds his rune armour gone. Oh, and suddenly his friend has rune armour. Easy realization that his friend (who is in his class at school) ripped him off. What's the best resolution? My initial reaction was anger that some doof ripped off my nephew and I wanted to tell him to ask for his armour back (while holding his head in the toilet) or have his older brother "convince" him to give it back. But, once the Italian influence passed, I wanted to honestly try and figure out how to help out. Anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking that maybe he could talk to him about it in-game, and if the kid (who also is 9 and should fall for it) admits taking it, he can file a report and the conversation will be transmitted to Jagex. It won't get his armour back, but should get the kid banned for stealing/scamming. It was also a good lesson for him to not share his password. I was wondering, has anyone been scammed by a real life friend? How did you handle it? Any input is appreciated.
Honest1
Well here's what I would do in the situation. Your nephew being 9 years old needs to take this as a lesson learned, and the reason I say this is that the other kid being 9 would not admit to having stole the armor, but if you do bail your nephew out on this then at his age it'll make him believe that if he has any problems there will always be there to bail him out. You said he didn't listen you tried to help him, well this may help him learn about account safety, and rules a bit better. I am very sorry that your nephew had a rl friend so low as to do this, but I think it really does have a moral behind this. Try and talk to your nephew about runescape safety again, and help him learn all this so that it doesn't happen again. Remember the old proverb, You can give a man a fish, and feed him for a day, or you can teach a man to fish, and feed him for a life time. Do what you feel is best, but this is the way I would have handled the situation. 99 Fishing 11/12/2006 790th fisher to 99Former Tip.it Events team leader
uber_dad
Well thought out answer. Thank you for your input. I know that's the right thing to do. I hope he does learn his lesson. I've warned him in the past, but it doesn't seem to be working. Maybe this will do it.

roller930
this happened to my brother, 8 years old also, his rl friend hacked him , i told him whats the point but he didnt listen, he said they were friends. next day my little brothers ddp, full rune, around 10k runes were gone, somehow his mate got lots of mage levels, 40 def, and he now had full rune and said he pked a ddp ... i jus argued and argued still aint got it back
Bubsa
I'm going to take a bit more of a sinister approach. You shouldn't do anything to help him get it back. He should deal with the consequences. That's harsh, I know, but I guarantee he won't fall for it again. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
dwarfie76
Yep, I'd say he pretty much has to chin up, change his password and get on with things. Worrying about it won't bring it back. Just one of life's little lessons that we all learn at some point or another.
Kaaslip
I doubt Jagex will take action when you tell them you (or your nephew in this case) lost your full rune because you told a friend your password. As been said, he will learn from his mistake. Eventually.
weezcake
I say do nothing, because he needs to learn his lesson NEVER TO GIVE HIS PASSWORD TO ANYONE. Once he learns that lesson, he'll never do it again (or at least I hope not). Besides, if a real life friend can't be trusted with a simple password, he isn't a true friend. My closest friends know my passwords (and yes, I can trust them, since I they've NEVER gone into my account without my permission in the last 6 years). That's a true friend for ya. =] ==================================Retired tip.it moderator.Teaching and inspiring.
binns
anyone i consider a friend is someone i can trust. many many people know my pass. not because ive gave it to them to use my account at any point in time but the fool i am i use the same pass for many things and these people are aware of this. on untrusted sites i use one password and for everything else ive used the same incredibly difficult to crack password. ive never had a problem and i never will. people need to choose their friends wisely and realize that just because youve known someone for a few months in a game or even real life they shouldnt be trusted that easily. you may consider them your friend but it takes a long time to earn trust and only one act to destroy it. so personally i dont keep "friends" i cannot trust
Slimfar
I have never and will never ever tell anyone my Password no matter how much I might know them or Trust them - But then that is me - My Account/Character is mine and see no reason why anyone else should know my Password. I also agree that you should not really take any action and hope your Nephew has learn't from this mistake he made. Ts_Stormrage
if a real life "friend" for some reason got hold of my account (who the hell is stupid enough to give out his pass anyways), and if he abused it... i'd go over and kick the crap out of him until his own parents wouldnt recognize him anymore... or till he gives me HIS password, so i can get everything back :) Former Leader of The Tal Shiar Alliance - An Original Tip.it ClanMember of the Wilderness Guardians and Founder of the Silent GuardiansFounder of The Conclave - A Tip.it Clan institutionTip.it Times author (click for all my articles) - When I use the wrong reasons to make the right statement, argue the reason, not the statement.MSSW4 General - Did we kick your ass too?Check us out!==> No seriously, if you like FREE GP, XP and Dung tokens, as well as Community, Opportunity and above all FUN... <==CLICK IT! bodder
Is anything, no matter how small, in life worth losing for runescape? Yes, my best friend does know my password, but he has never and I imagine, will never even think about taking my stuff. I would never take any of his stuff, it is not worth my 2 hours saved to lose a friend of 6 years? is it? THanks, Ian
7up407
Theres now an age limit to playing runescape, you have to be older than twelve i think it is. I know a lot of people will lie but its just something to think about with your brother. Let him learn his leston and hopefully he'll never do it again. I trust a friend a lot and i tell him most everything, but my pass is not something i will ever tell him no matter what.

I am right with you, heck i don't even let my own brother who i know i can trust 110% know my password. I use similar reasoning as you did when he asks for it. Pier pressure? I can just see you being threatened by a wharf or jetty because you're a teleporter. Yes, I can see a large wooden wharf uprooting itself from the shore, walking over to you and slapping you in the back of the head for teleporting.

Well i just lost a friend and 2 mil...o and got ISS for a week Id make that father get so ashamed of himself he wouldnt be able to say a word back to me, even if id be a teen. If your friend really did that, and then his dad comes and does [cabbage] then just go to his dad and tell him, is this the kind of father you are, are you teaching your kid to steal from someone who hes been friends with for over 10 years, you pathetic piece of [cabbage], how hard is it to realize, someone doesnt just go "hey you owe me 2mil", id spit in his fvcking face, how horrible of a father. I had a bully ask me "can I borrow your weapons" in a similiar game, I told him "lol you arent a trustable person, just look at you in school, i wouldnt even borrow you a pencil" - got beat up for this, but never lost a single weapon in the game :D tbh I havent given out my password to my own brother. why? cause he might go crazy, go in the wild and get himself killed. noone knows my password, and noone can understand when im typing it (over 15 characters some upper some lower case mixed with numbers)
skeroh
me and my two friends both know one of my two friends account's passwrod, but they don't know my pass cuz its too complicated. my friends account has been hacked before by --username removed-- too and he always denies that he didn't hack us althou he always shows off the stuff he hacked. i have gotten hacked on my personal account before by a rl friend, but i didn't do a ban appeal cuz he has a mod friend and all he took were items and jagex cant replace items (can they?)....i had full sara and around 1.2 mil and two sets of rune armor and he took all of that at that time and it was worth more than now. heh. i forgot to renew my membership and that was the day he hacked me and so he couldn't take any of my member stuff. i hate --username removed-- Retired from runescape. I will be on every now and then though. :)

The problem with this is that if he talks to this 'friend' online about this, then it will most likely come out in the open that he told someone his password. I don't know if Jagex would actually think of this as account sharing, but it's just something to think about. :? me and my two friends both know one of my two friends account's passwrod, but they don't know my pass cuz its too complicated. my friends account has been hacked before by --username removed-- too and he always denies that he didn't hack us althou he always shows off the stuff he hacked. i have gotten hacked on my personal account before by a rl friend, but i didn't do a ban appeal cuz he has a mod friend and all he took were items and jagex cant replace items (can they?)....i had full sara and around 1.2 mil and two sets of rune armor and he took all of that at that time and it was worth more than now. heh. i forgot to renew my membership and that was the day he hacked me and so he couldn't take any of my member stuff. i hate --username removed--. trapical
I don't recommend any physical action, its a great lesson for your brother and in the long run the "friend" will realize 100k isnt the price of a friend, maybe tell your brother to never talk to the kid again, he'll get the picture). VOV
Why do so many people insist on doing nothing. All that will do is encourage the kid to let people walk all over him in the future. I know the price. I pay it gladly.
snow_boots
I logged on xero last night and all was gone but an addy pick and one set of iron... I'm not gonna beg tho, just mine up some ess or something. See my time in FFXI tought me how to wait out the hard times.. I camped rare monsters with 2+ hour spawn times and nearly always got them, so a lil mining cant really frustrate me.
