Economy after the Bot nuke

Recommended Posts

No surprises here. With the removal of complicated gathering routines (bots) the prices of all items are on the rise. The excess raw materials are being bought up more and more, but not being replaced at the previous rate. Prices for materials go up, so the need for actual gp to pay for these items go up. Rare prices go down because that's the obvious choice to get gp quickly. That's all the short term stuff.

Now for the long term. The part that makes the discussion fun. How will the average mid and high level player change their play style? Will they debase themselves gathering their own materials? Look into more mini-games which offer a better gp to xp ratio? Turn to GE flipping to get the extra cash to finance leveling? Reduce their goals from 99 to perhaps a level that's needed just for the existing content?

On top of how players react to the economic changes, how will Jagex react? Currently, Jagex offers a wide variety of things that replicate what bots did. You have methods of resources gathered (MTK, Bert, Varrock Battlestaffs, Essence, Flax). You're given methods to level any skill almost free of charge (Penguins, Troll Invasion, Jack of all Trade, Tears). You're given methods for quick xp in a variety of skills (D&D events such as Circus or daily/weekly events such as Bork or Hanky points). With bots no longer providing players with relatively cheap and easy leveling, will Jagex fill the void even more than usual? It seems so with the coming update of Player Owned Ports which, like MTK, seem to be a legal version of bots gathering a variety resources.

Makes no difference to me, I couldn't afford shit after I got hacked 3 months ago, but I think it will get to a tipping point where everything becomes too costly to afford, including the BASICS.

I'm get most of my money from MTK and herb farming. Meaning as other stuff goes up, so does my income. I can't really see this affecting me very much.

The bot nuke heavily affected players like myself who's income consisted entirely of things like dicing. Once our dicing money is gone, we don't know what to do with ourselves. All the popular money making methods seem boring, slow. Suddenly, we're poor again and there's not much we can do.

It's still in flux because there's still a large number of players with the get 99 mindset. Soon, once prices make that a pipe dream for more players, then the demand will go down along with the prices. In addition, as consumables go up, so too will the desire to gather these consumables for a better profit which will also help find a happy medium for a stable price.

Amazing how these 10 months of power bots really messed with the economy.

Personally I doubt gathering will become much more lucrative to the high-end player. It's now a decent way for a mid to low level player to get their foot in the door, like it used to be, but I'm guessing that dicing will be replaced by bossing again (Though staking will probably remain higher than it once was). For me the most interesting move on JaGeX's part recently was the drop table of the ganodermic beasts: high end trees, fruit trees, and the best herb seeds are pretty common there for the first time from a campable monster.

Eh, thing is, we now have an economy that's virtually bot free. RS has never really had that before - even in FT removal days, there were still quite a few botters. So even if we went from FT removal to this, we'd still be seeing an impact.

I can tell you one thing, RS is interesting me a lot less because other then pengs/JOT, everything seems to be boring, requiring money, or both. (Well, pengs/JOT aren't exhilarating either, but they don't take long.)

Squab unleashes Megiddo! Completed all quests and hard diaries. 75+ Skiller. (At one point.) 2000+ total. 99 Magic.

Buying spins make you a bad person...don't do it. It's like buying nukes for North Korea.

Well if it bothers you that the game is more fun now, then you can go cry in a corner. :shame:

your article was the equivalent of a circumcized porcupine

The only thing wrong with it is the lack of a percentage for when you need to stroke it.

Pardon my poor knowledge of gambling, but where is this money coming from? I assume it's from others that are staking also trying to get enough to max out?

90 Attack, 87 Str, 99 Def, piss all cash to both stake and buy gear...

Yeah, doesn't really work for everyone.

"No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded." - same type of statement.

In a free market system like the Grand Exchange, this will not happen. It might for a particular individual, but not for the players as a whole. The only reason prices for items are high is because there are players willing to pay those prices.

When i box staked i got scammed couple times. Wonder if that's what you mean it's not "total random".

Nah, bots have not completely gone. Went to kill some green dragons for d'hides and d'bones

And in a server with only 200 guy I found 10 guy, of varying levels, 3 iteming and killing green dragons, and based on their silly actions (say, chase a dragon at far side rather than killing the one near it; or the response when a pker attacks them), I deduce that they are bots

Back to topic: While supply of raw resources have declined, so are the consumption of them. Items like lobsters (commonly botted on f2p) is still dirt cheap, and is still not a viable way to make good money (Shark did shoot up a bit, not know if it is due to bot banished or what). Not expecting any major change of economy.

The markets are already seeing signs of declining in the items that had shot up. Nature rune rose to 278 gp each and are now declining. I sold some snape grass via ge 500 each yesterday and they've a ge price of 912 each, Ranarr are also falling. Many high-end farm seeds are lowering. But there are many herbs still rising, so it is very difficult to predict what to buy still. Are we also experiencing arteficial demand? I know I was using that when I bought my nats and P ess. Made about 40M from those without any intention of using. Made about 10M off of seed payments, but lost some money on the actual seeds. Which all in all probably puts me about no better than I was before. Ahah, well maybe slightly better considering I got 2 farm levels.

The actual dice rolls involved in combat are random. However, things like PID, kiting, attack styles, etc. can be abused to shift the odds in your favor.

Nope its not random  theres just more to it then you realize. Theres a reason some players win boxes 60-70% of the time and others lose more often, and its not luck of the draw.

On computers making something completely random is nearly impossible for big systems, there is always some sort of algorithm which has small loopholes in it, if you know those loopholes and know how to use them to your advantage you could do that indeed, but I doubt it would be as much as 60-70%.

As far as I know, there aren't any significant holes in the rs algorithm. I'd love to be proved wrong though.
