Why do people hate rares so much?

Giordano

Recommended Posts

Like alot of newer players, I too was jealous of people wearing santas and phats.

A few months ago I bought a blue mask. And ever since then, I've been able to appreciate how much hard work it takes to afford rares.

I don't approve of greedy merchants who cause the price of rares to go up every week. But I know there really is no solution to that, other than to make them untradeble.

i think that rares give poor people an aspiration...a goal. they have something to work for then and when can afford it they feel a sense of gratification and they can truely apreciate themsleves for earning a rare :D

It's not jealousy, not on my part at least. It's more of a lack of understanding as to why they're so overpriced. It's not like they're worth anything to the game; they give no stat bonuses, they have no special features, they just sit on your head (or in your bank) and look ridiculous.

I mean, heck, the latest batch of holiday/random event items look a thousand times better, are free and sometimes even have unique features like the chicken whacking. My current favorite costume is a Prince Suit with the blue hat from Christmas, the matching scarf and a pair of purple gloves. And, other than the gloves, it was all free; I didn't have to pay out my nose to get any of it - heck, the gloves themselves only put me back like 10gp or so.

I like this sentiment. I'll give my perspective on a real-life comparison real quick, and then get back to this.

I've never quite understood the collect for investment mentality.

For example:

Comics? I'd rather just read 'em.

Coins? Well now, a full collection of the state quarters plated in gold would look really cool for a while, but they wouldn't have much practical use. It's probably a bad example, but I can't see collecting much of anything because they look cool and might net some cash later.

The stock market I understand a little better. It's ultimately a gamble on the fortunes of particular companies that are on the exchange; but it is an investment in capital.

Back to rares: The most sought-after rares are items that can actually be worn, to show off your wealth.

I like wearing fancy clothes. I once collected as many non-stat boosting clothes that I could and took so many screenies of the combinations thereof that at least one of my friends that saw them thought I had tons of clothes in my bank.

I plan on entering the H1P best-dressed contest.

But I generally don't have any interest in collecting some clothing items for investment or to specifically show them off. That said, I like treasure trail items, but I just wear 'em for fun.

It's not jealousy for me, I could have any rare I want. I'd rather train my skills and PLAY the game. Rares have turned into something they were NEVER intended for. Andrew himself has said this multiple times, why do you think there are nothing but non-tradable rares now. Arguing with merchants over it is like smashing yourself in the face with a hammer though.

It doesn't make any sense to "invest" in some worthless, ugly trinket when you can invest the same millions in skills; skills will always make money for you, there's no such guarantee with rares. At any moment, a number of things could happen to the "rare market" that would reduce your multi-million gp investment into a folly: Jagex could finally get tired of hearing about it and make them untradeable--Darg--

- 1st it is very smart to invest in a rare... how do u think people become rich?... people invest in rares. skills can make money but nothing compared to holding a rare a month or 2.

- If jagex got rid of rares there would be tons of people to quite the game... basically cuz they would lose millions and people wanting to get them or close to getting them cant so they quite as well

- That brings me to another point.. someone right above my post said now that he got a mask make them untradable.. i dont c how fair that is just because u got one. As i see it rares give people something to work hard for. I think people are just upset because some people got them free, and some people had to work not as hard as they do now to get one.

- I dont see y though everyone that doesnt have a rare should complain... if they dont like them go back to lvling ur skills or whatever... and leave the people alone that like them such as merchants. I myself am i mercahnt and find it very enjoyble trading rares back and forth... just as yall like seeing ur lvls go up i like seeing my $ go up. Before u say anything im lvl 85mining too so i play this game too... and also not all merchants scam but repectfully buy and sell items to gain prfoit (As they just made a article about this)

- So ya people hate rares cuz they cant get them, are jelous, or have to work harder than the people before them did to get the item.

I think jealously is an overused and misunderstood reasoning behind why people actually hate rare items. After all, isn't jealously the root cause and desire to obtain such an item that is an unweilding symbol of wealth, power and status within the game? Besides I doubt, no, I know that Jagex doesn't enjoy watching what was to be intended as a simple "customer appreation" turn into such a farce. Why do you think they stopped the holiday drops for a year and then to return them with untradable qualities? Is Jagex jealous? No. They're furious, and the soul reason why they havent made previous holiday drops untradeable or removed them all together is due to the soul fact that so many have invested their life earnings into these trophies and it would cause an unwarranting revolt within the runescape community that Jagex would rather leave them alone then put up with the thousands of complaints that would follow suit. So they sit back and continue to watch the inflation rate of these rares rise to unbelievable heights that have no end in sight. I believe that people hate the rares because they stand for so much that they shouldn't.

I don't like rares. Not because I can't afford them, but because I think they're overrated. Like ppl said before, they don't boost any stats, they're just there for "cosmetic" fun.

Their main use nowaydays is merching. And I don't think that's what RS is about. I think it's about leveling, and having fun. I think it is ridiculous that people get scammed or hacked because of an item WORTH (hi-alch) about 100 gp or less!!! Of course, If a phat would appear before my eyes, I would take it and sell it, but that's not the question here.

If JaGEx would have intended people to create "stock market-like" items (as are phats and the like now), they would have made a new skill, (and I don't mean carpentry :P ) called merchanting, completed it with a merching guild and everyone would go on his/her merry way...

anyway....rares...I don't really care

Lol i can't understand such people. If you hate rares dont buy them lol. I didn't get any rares for free, I'm not a merchanter also. I bought my phat, becouse I've played for a long time and earned the money. People who got them like a holiday drops deserved them too, its a reward for long playing and loyalty.

Phats shows your wealth, power and experience in game. Do you think that lvl 3 (combat) player with phat (or at least santa) on his head would be called noob? I dont think so...

What about jagex mods. Yes they are saying that rares is "evil" lol, but why the hell they wear phats themself?

Lol jagex mods should wear bronze med's (or smth), it gives stats bonuses  !!!

they can't afford it. okay, just think about it.

phatmaster: (walks around with blue phat on head)

n00bieking: haha, n00b. price manipulators ( continues scolding crap )

phatmaster: (ignores)

n00bieking: hehe. stop ignoring me, dude. just because you have a party hat doesnt mean you are better than me.

phatmaster: please shut up. if you can't afford, just say so.

n00bieking: even if you were to give me your phat, i wouldn't even want it.

phatmaster: as if

*poof* shade appears as phatmaster buries a dragon bone.

n00bieking loilters around.

phatmaster: what you still here for? get away. waiting for me to die isit?

n00bieking: as if

phatmaster: lol. if u wanna get my phat, juz say so. don't need to hide it. but i won't die so easily ...

*phatmaster got owned by shade*

n00bieking happily picks up the blue party hat and wears it on his head.

its funny. if you can't afford something, you say it sux. if you finally can afford it, you won't ever say it sux. i mean, when you are trying to buy a rare, you try hard to bring down the price. and when you finally buy the rare, you scold those who bring it down.

you just proved yourself wrong trying to prove yourself right...

runescape is for fun.

for many merchanting and makeing cash is the funnest thing in game for them.

so mercahtning phats= what runescape is about for them.

Why do people hate rares so much?

Because they don't afford it.

Another bad arguement. I'm sure most people (if they worked for it) can afford rares. They don't want to buy them simply because they have more common sense and wish to use the money elsewhere for skills etc.

I dislike them due to they are pointless and only used to show greed.

I owned a phat for all of 2 days, had people buggin me non stop.... beggin and it looked dumb, so I gave it to a friend let them have the hassle (only worth 25m then)

I could buy another phat today if I wanted but to what point? invest? I have no need for what I have now , to show off? Why it is just a game.

Rares are only useful for those two reasons and to seek them is a waste.

Nice scenario microtosh. People don't like rares because they can't afford in most cases. Some are different, but like I said...in MOST cases. If rares were to become untradeable the Runescape economy would collapse, many people would quit the game, and others would have nothing to work for. I myself in one way wouldn't mind if they weren untradable....but then I wouldn't have anything to work for, even though I already have a few rares that doesn't mean I don't want to make money to get more. I personally like the "trinkets" on my head. 8)

I dont have ONE rare :D But I dont care that much. I'm a little dissapointed tha tI dont have a syth or bunny ears, but there you go. Eventially, they will go for over 1 bill each, and only the people who allready have them will have one.

Honestly, its just a butch of red pixals organized into the shape of a party hat...right..boys..?

This has probably been said before, but I believe that people don't actually hate the rares, they hate people who own rares because they are jaelous of them and cannot afford their own.

I don't hate rares. They just make me work harder to make money. Like a year ago i finally got enough money to buy a santa for around 500k I think. Well then about 4 days later I got scammed.Don't ask how. Anyways then I made 500k more because i wanted it so bad. Then... it raised to 800k.. then higher and higher. But now I've kept making money and I have a blue mask now which i bought for 11m.

Rares today are manipulated.

I think some people don't like rares, I think they just don't like half the people who own a rare. Those people who fake trades to inflate price, the noobs yelling out "Sell your Santas for 10 mil each! Santas are now 10 mil each!"

I totally understand if you don't like rares because of that.

However, if you don't like them because people show-off with them, or they're price is to high, then that's your problem. Envying someone's achievement, or starting the game to late, again, that's just jealousy.
