U.S., World Domination in the Past in Sports? Over?

Featured Replies

America does pretty well in Track and field events aswell.

The only real sports that America has competition in (which they play regularly) is Japan for baseball and some other countries with basketball. I never even knew that Usa played Soccer. :?

And the United States after being so dominant in the sports world...

I must confess I'm not that big a sports fan on the whole. But I don't live in a vacuum and I read newspapers and watch the TV news so I tend to stumble into sports news anyway. But... I didn't get that. Which sports has the United States been dominant in for the past decade?

just me...

i eat somewhat healthy...

no candy/sugar/salty stuff for me...

i eat natural food.. :P

i dont exercise really.. unless im in school

i skate a little. bike... not much activity

im not overweight.. im like 5'11'' - 120lbs. :P

why am i typing this ?

Damn man. You're like anorexic. I'm 5'6 and weigh 127 lbs and I still have a good BMI.

Because soccer isn't that fun to play or watch, so not very popular.

Dude, no.

What irks me is how often adjectives such as "world" are misused in American sports. Like the winners of the NBA Finals are called "WORLD Champions" or something else like that. Pretty arrogant methinks.

What's funny is that they're not even dominant in international basketball. Case in point, the olympics. The 'dream team' didn't even reach the finals.

When was America good in soccer? :?

They never were, because nobody in America cares about soccer...

USA is good in sports, seeing you have all those afther school stuff. I mean, sports is a pretty important in USA no? (or TV said it was  )

Soccer is for America, what American football is to Europe: a boring dull sport with not alot of people who care about it.

people say the US is the dominent sporting nation? only becuase most of there sports are only played in there continent. IMO Australia is the greatest sporting nation, they actualy play sports the rest of the world plays. And there good at it.

as for you saying USA beating the Czech republic was an easy game.

i really, really hope you loose against Ghana. Now that would be embarasing for the apparent greatest nation on earth loosing to one of the poorest.

and if your going by the FIFA rankings, Iraq finished above Scotland, Austria and Belgium. Dont take these rankings to seroiusly.

Only thing that comes to mind when I think about USA dominating in sports is Basketball(other than track and field that is) and even then they've been so so at that for the last couple of yearts, propably because they don't really setn all their talents to the international comps.

Ghana is awesome in soccer, so it wouldn't be surprising if they beat the US team.

 eh?

this is the only time they have qualified for the world cup, and they won the african cup of nations 4 times, the last being in 1985 (over 20 years ago). Hardly a nation of much history in football is it?

Cameroon or Nigeria, yes they are great teams, but Ghana?

my bad then, always got the African teams mixed up.

USA dominates strongly in the athletics side of things, and obviously dominate with "their" sports, like american football, baseball etc. Everywhere else it's pretty fair game, i'd say Australia was just as strong a sporting nation as well all round. It's just there's a lot of people in America to draw on, and they have the money to recognise sporting potential and develop it from an early age.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

Wrong. IIRC, Athens 2004 Olympics - Argentina got gold for basketball and Cuba for baseball.

USA have never been a great team in football. I don't know where you got that idea from. Maybe your media has been falsely building them up? (maybe the FIFA ranking helped this - they are are a load of rubbish) Also your expectations might have been set too high because they reached the quarter finals 4 years ago. They got lucky then.

Now the Czech's are one of the best team in the world and no one expects a win when playing them(well maybe Brazil)

But yeah USA have never dominated in football.

Indeed, I don't know where you get the whole idea mate.

1/ US is ranked 5th in the world, while they actually should be 50th, because they never play against European teams that would get their ranking down, if I have to compare it with a game, it's kinda like taking out all the noobs and never facing the real pros ;)

2/ Czechs: defintale one of the best teams. It's not because it's a rather unkonwn and small (+-8 million inhabitants?) country that they can't hit a ball properly. People tend to think that because a ntaion is famous, they're better in everything. Look at Holland; also a rahter small nation (14mill inhabitants) but they are definately one of the nations that might win the world cup.

I'm not trying to tell Europeans are better in sports, at all. We're just better in football, because it's the leading port here. We won't stand a chance if it comes to baseball, american football or perhaps B-ball (although some eastern European teams often beat the US, so you see, they ain't that bad).

The U.S were never going to beat Czech Republic so don't beat yourself up about it!

Ghana are not a bad team. If they were they would not be in the finals. They are certainly not the best but the USA will have to watch them when they play them.

sig2ho7.jpg

Umm, I'm pretty sure that the Czech republic are favored to do really well in this World Cup, so I wouldn't say that was an auto-win, well, obviously.

Soccer isn't too popular in the United States except in the suburbs. Where I live, just about everybody plays or has played soccer in a league, although most people still aren't any good. I like the sport and plan on getting back into an indoor league after football season this year.

Football shows how insane us Americans are. It's SO freaking competitive. I play for a high school team. We conditioned (weights and running) for about 2 hours a day 4 days a week from january to september, plus camps in the summer, then 3 hour practices the entire fall, and our record was 2-7. It's borderline ridiculous how competitive the sport has gotten even at the high school level.

As for the olympics and world championships in baseball and basketball, the attitude that it seems the athletes have gotten is that it doesn't matter. They seem to be interested in money, which they'll get by doing really well in the MLB or NBA. The world championships just don't seem to have meaning for most of them.

They are only ranked 5th in the World because the only games they play are against absolutely rubbish teams.

Most of their players play for low-league teams in Europe anyway.

I think that the US is still dominant in what they have always been dominant in, We have never really done anything in footbal or rugby. But in Baseball, American Football, and basketball the US is still strong.

Part of the reason the US lost in Basketball is that the rules are slightly different and the best US players don't play. I mean come on Emeka Okafor on the Olympic team.

Your true character is what you are like when you believe there are no repercussions.

Slightly offtopic, but I found an article about soccer written from an American perspective.

Ofcourse this doesn't speak for the American population, but I find it quite funny.

I really laughed my nose off.

Isn't the US surprising bad at football as it's quite a recent sport for them compared to places like England and etc.

Also, does your thongue hurt, or your fingers fall when you say FOOTBALL, for God's sakes, the whole world calls it football, why do you americans call it soccer?

We happen to associate the word 'football' with our not-as-cool version of rugby.

It's time to quit apologizing and tell the truth. When it comes to soccer, we're right, and the rest of the world is wrong. If they want to dance in the streets of Cameroon or Belgium over this stuff, fine. But the sport does not suit American taste, and we should stop feeling guilty about it.

Look, Americans are an industrious people. We use our hands. We catch footballs. We throw baseballs. We hit golf balls and tennis balls by gripping a piece of equipment. It is unnatural for us to put our hands behind our backs and try to "pass" a soccer ball to a teammate by bouncing it off our heads. We aren't circus seals, and no one is going to toss us a fish if we do it right.

No matter which country wins, rest assured that thousands will die in worldwide rioting. I'm going to pick up the satellite feed of The Hooligan Network, direct from Europe. They show split screen: the soccer game on one half, fans clubbing each other on the other.

Yes, America may be the only country that doesn't go goofy for soccer. We also are the only remaining super power. Don't you see a connection there?

WTH? Cocky republicans. It's mindboggling that 'free press' like that is allowed in the US. The writer obviously feels superior to the rest of the entire world, he's mentioning Belgium, Cameroon, France, England, China, the Middle East and actually any nation that's involved in the World Cup.

To top all of his ignorance, he also claims that an inferno will occur because thousands of hooligans will kill eachother. Right. What was the country that had -by far- the most homocides in the world? I thought it wasn't a European one.

heinzny2.jpg

Ehh, free press means we have to allow people to print even when its insulting, riduculous, or otherwise idiotic. I wouldn't take it too personally.

Although the idea of soccer riots is kinda amusing... So, funny story. A friend of mine, who referees soccer and is fluent in spanish, was talking to one of our school janitors about soccer, i guess the janitor is from mexico or south america, about the world cup a while back, i think in the 1950 cup game between Uruguay and Brazil. Anyways, apparently the ref made a bad call, giving Uruguay (or whatever team it really was, I can't remember!) a penalty kick, which they scored to win the game, and the soccer fans LYNCHED the ref afterwards.

So, that friend of mine referees soccer. I was thinking that a big group of us should show up at one of his like, 12 year old girls games (The games are in a rec league in the suburbs, so they're really tame) and just going crazy. Like, yelling, rioting, cheering really loudly, penguin dives, etc, and then when the game ends, running onto the field and carrying the ref off and throwing him into a car. But we're afraid we'd get the cops called on us.

Anyways. I'm american, and a big fan of soccer. If I was better, I'd probably be playing it instead of american football...

Cheering really loudly? Penguin dives? You'd be more laughed off if you thought that'd be hooligan like...

Oh and america doesn't dominate anything apart from athletics and american football these days.

Canada/sweden take hockey

Japan takes baseball these days

And basketball american olympic team has got nothing recently.
