Why are people nicer over the internet?

Even smell each other?

That is exactly it. Smell contributes to almost 58% of domestic violence cases.

Your Guide to Posting! Behave or I will send my Moose mounted Beaver launchers at you!

Because when someone is speaking in only text, you can fill in the tones and in-betweens yourself, and thus you're less annoyed by people and less mean :D Plus, if someone tells an awful joke in real life, you might try to give a slight half smile, which is the equivalent of an "lol" really :P

I don't know. Online, it's just easier to be nice. :D

Yeah -- and for the same reason, I don't really like talking to people I know IRL on the internet. They seem different.

I'm only nicer to people who I don't have any reason to be mean to. In online games, where people are annoying me, I give em an earfull.

I give anyone that annoys me in my training spot in RS the verbal beating of their life.

Im back!

Just came home from school where I picked up my yearbook and said goodbye (probably for the last time) to friends and teachers.

And based on the replies here, I believe theres still hope for mankind!

I do think it's a lot easier to come across as being harsh on the net. You don't have the tone of someones voice to indicate how they mean what they say, so someone who's agreeing with you might sound like they're being sarcastic.... or vice versa i guess.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend.

The general feeling over the internet is that there is hardly ever emotions to conversations.

What I mean is, you have to guess their real life body movement, tone and expressions. And you only have your imagination to help you.

Personally, I've tried being sarcastic in here a couple of times, and sometimes the people on the receiving end of my reply, thought I was flaming them...

Then again, sometimes im really being mean, but people still dont get my point...

Now that really made me laugh!

stoopid.. :|

i hate when people do those things...

usually anime freaks * no offense* use them.

ver'eh' annoying...

wonder if they try to make those faces in real life.

Most people argue over the internet because they can't do it with someone face to face. I don't see how people are nicer, I think it's just the same. I'm a nice guy in real life and on the internet. Some people just don't have a good social life so they have all their friends on a computer instead of in person. This includes girls...

I actually have a friend who makes those faces in real life (I'm pretty sure she wishes she was an anime character). It's very entertaining...

I dunno about people being meaner or nicer, but I think people find it easier to open up on the internet and talk about personal things to complete strangers because they won't leave lasting impressions. TAlking about something personal, even to close friends, can be tough if you're afraid of them judging you. Talking to someone on a forum like this... You know there's some common ground, but there's a safe amount of distance.

I find that odd - most people i know are exactly the same over msn as they are in person, but a couple are totally different. One of my friends is really intelligent and well spoken, but for some reason she types like a 12 year old AOL'er.

I'll never know why that is, although i guess some people are just better at articulating their thoughts than writing/typing them.

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

I'm sure most of them are actually acting just like they do in person; I suppose it's just that it seems different when read. The more computer literate people I know all type properly -- I wonder if it's to do with how fast they type? Still, when I try and type badly it takes longer!

I think it's because on the computer you always have those extra seconds to think about what you're going to say. In real life, usually, replies come dryer, and you only think about what you said after you say it.

Oh, and Jak, maybe girls only talk to you via internet because you're deadly ugly. :P

I have a couple friends who are like that and it's really frustrating to be having a semi-intelligent conversation that's filled with "LOL" and "i kno wat u mean."

Is it because we all speak a common language?

We all speak HTML

Communication is easier over the internet. After all, that's its only point.

I don't think people are nice over the internet. I dunno what you are talking about. Half the people you meet are just trying to molest you.

Hmm, then if there are 2 people talking to you, me and Necromagus, one of us is trying to molest you?

Makes sence.

Well, it is necro you're talking about.

Now .... actually, the guys got a point.

In my experience there aren't so many nice people when I'm online. The only people I tend to get along with are people who have the same opinions as me or are actually trying to be nice. Some people like to be mean just because they can't do it in real life without getting beat up.
