killersushipunk
The dad probably hates gay people, and holds church group book-burinings. Can't people see that they won't always there to shelter their children, and if they do, then that's kind of weird? I should meet him, we'd have a right fun conversation. :D You should see in my church, "Ronald" who is extremely cathlic, and "James", who is gay. Ronald: Hello. How. Are. You. James: I. Am. Fine. They have to be civil, because it's church. Quite funny. I used to have a link to my school's project to provide fresh water to a Kenyan Village, but the sig police changed the link to say something, which, if followed, leads to an "ahem" adult website. deloriagod
people are so uptight these days.. they need to chill and stop caring My thoughts exactly.. If more people could do this maybe we'd have less morons like the guy in the article I didn't bother to read, because I don't really care about him.. Religion just seems to cause so many problems.. Kryptic
That book is an amazing story. It outlines the possibilities of what society could go through and the possible outcomes. More over its important because we all take books and readings for granted, imagine just one day all literature was controlled and regulated by the government. Would you pull a Guy Montag? Seriously, I found something in the bible saying it's OK to beat your children, and that it's OK to drink to forget, but how many churchy people are going to do that? They can't pick and choose when to be literalist, if they're going to take the whole thing literally. Not just the discriminatory parts. I'm sorry but this went going a bit off topic. I'm still going at it though. I can't hang out with my best friend because his grandmother hates me. She doesn't know me. She's never met me. But she's extremely religious and therefore hates me for being gay. She's a lovely little lady, she is. She follows a religion that says LOVE THY NEIGHBOR but I guess that doesn't apply to me just because I'm a Geighbor (play on words, take that!). I've ranted enough. I'm out of here. Adam007
Still, all of his concerns are just egh and his daughter is definitely going to have a hell of a time come college (if he allows her to go  ) > Bible college. ;) But yeah, that worry over censorship is just terrible. There's always going to be people like that. It's kind of funny that she's trying to get a book censored that's basic message is against censorship. insane
The girl is 15. Sure, I could understand there being a problem about a book with "language" and "bad themes" before the girl is old enough to see a PG13 movie, but this is ridiculous. That last sentence is a laugh. If your 15 and you haven't seen an R rated movie than I pity you. PG-13 is nothing. It's serious once it hits NC-17. That's a funny thing to "pity" someone for. I'm assuming you're not from Canada - the ratings here are generally accurate, or too liberal in my opinion (but no surprises there, right?). It's ridiculous some of the movies that slip through the "R" rating. Seriously, I found something in the bible saying it's OK to beat your children You clearly took that verse out of context. I'm assuming you're talking about the verse in Proverbs where it talks about disciplining your child with a rod. Think about it in context - up until about 20 years ago, it was completely legitimate to discipline your child physically - even today, very few people refrain from physical discipline, and the ones that do usually have the most ill-behaved children on the face of this planet. So yes, the Bible talks about physical discipline; but when quoting it, don't leave out the "discipline" part, lest you make yourself out to be a liar. ON-T: I've yet to see anyone dispute Alton Verm said he doesn't understand how the district can punish students for using bad language, yet require them to read a book with bad language as part of a class. This part makes perfect sense. It's a contradiction within the school system. One cannot logically exist with the other. I also find it ironic that people criticizing his views are the ones telling him to be more open minded.

This part makes perfect sense. It's a contradiction within the school system. One cannot logically exist with the other. Here you go then: Using bad language in the context of art is fine, as is using nudity. It is about context. An art class can study Michelangelo's David, the Venus di Milo, etc. and still punish people for being nude in school because it is not appropriate in that context. An actor may speak some of the most offensive words that exist in the context of the film he's acting in, but if he speaks that way to the director he might get sacked. dusqi
Apparently the daughter came to the father and said that she had reservations about reading it because of language. So it's not necessarily that he's protecting her from the real world in a fruitless attempt to keep her pious all of her life, she just didn't want to read it. For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns. The time when the living and the dead exist as one.

Evilperson
As people stated before: This is the exact definition of irony. Know what else is ironic? He is trying to protect her from "public schools" That is ironic because you cant stay hidden from the general public of the people forever. If they don't agree with the school board that much, then they can go to a private school. If the school board thinks that the child should read the book to get the themes, then the child should. I dont understand why you cant read bad words. How is that offensive, when used artistically? Honestly. OMG I READ A NAUGHTY WORD!! MY LIFE IS OVER!!!! Okay, ill stop being immature now. But seriously, why dont they go to a private school if that family doesnt like the public. BlueLancer
Just amusing. The father is simply put a moron; He didn't even read the book and now he's blaming it for 'bad language' and 'citing God...' Trying to shelter her 15 year old daughter from "bad words". Will he go to her school and tell all the other kids not to swear or he'll beat them up? About the PG thing: I watched Rambo and mortal kombat when I was about 5, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. How many of you really obeyed those "guidances" with religious respect as a child? And do you really believe the majority of children will be negatively affected by it? Though, some of the age restrictions DO exist for a reason. There are movies that shouldn't be seen by kids under age 14 or so, but after that it becomes impossible to tell a teen what movies he/she can watch and what he cant, if the kid has even the slightest bit of determination he/she will just go over to his/her friends house and watch it there. Duh.

He's trying to protect his daughter from what he can. At least that's honorable, doing what he believes in. About the PG thing: I watched Rambo and mortal kombat when I was about 5, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. How many of you really obeyed those "guidances" with religious respect as a child? And do you really believe the majority of children will be negatively affected by it? I'm sorry but I get upset when people say that the media (movies, music, etc.) don't affect them. There are tons of articles and polls disproving that idea! :wall: If you're around cussing, you'll start to cuss. If you listen to music that tells you to go kill cops and murder is honorable, etc. then your chances of committing crimes goes up A LOT! Duh. I'm sorry, but I disagree here too. A 15 year old kid is NOT that much more mature than a 14 year old kid. That's like saying once a girl has her menstrual cycle, she is psychologically ready for sex. It's not just once you hit an age or a certain time in your life that you're READY for such things. Besides, the parents allowing a certain movie or (more popularly) having sex, then the parent is doing everything within their right to protect their child. It may not work but you can't control the world. I'm currently transitioning from a Wizard to a Mage and a Priest to an Archpriest. Lol both are nonexistant in the top 25. Hopefully I can change that. :D

If there are tons of articles (polls just solicit opinions so they're irrelevant) proving this then you won't have a problem citing some, will you? Also remember that they have to establish cause & effect, not just correlation (I'll bet at least 50% of all criminals smoke or drink alcohol, but that doesn't prove smoking or drinking cause crime).
