Runescape featured in the Wall Street Journal

Featured Replies

Well, I was heading down to my early morning class today, and I picked up a copy of the WSJ to read before class. I skimmed through the front page for any important world news, and then I went to the B section (Marketplace), hoping to find something entertaining to read.

To my amazement, I was greeted with the title "The Knights of Networking", and underneath was one of the CGI Runescape wallpapers. (here)

The article went on to talk about Runescape, and how popular it's becoming among teenagers, for both play and socializing. According to the WSJ, Jagex demonstrated the gameplay for outside companies recently, possibly heading towards selling the business.

"A person familiar with the matter says JAgex executives have indicated they wouldn't sell the business for less than $500 million. But Constant Tedder, the co-founder and CEO of Jagex, says Jagex isn't interested in being acquired right now, and hasn't placed a price on the company for suitors."

The article then compares Runescape to other popular networking sites such as Myspace, noting the friend lists for easy conversations. An example is given of a woman in her twenties getting hooked on RS, and throwing a virtual birthday party for a friend, with cakes and everything.

Nearly the end of the article, it confirms what we may have heard in the past about Runescape expanding to other languages. It says Jagex will focus heavily over the next 18 months on translating the game into other languages, such as German.

However, my favorite part of the article was when it said how Jagex celebrates each time they hit a milestone. For their most recent "jolly", they'll soon charter a jet and send the entire company to the Canary Islands for a beach party.

It was a very good article, not only for advertising Runescape to parents who read the WSJ, but also for displaying how popular it already is.

I tried to find a link for this online, but you'd need to sign up on WSJ.com for a free trial to read the whole article.

Wow nice find. It's good to see runescape finally getting the attention it deserves; its player count is in the millions, Jagex makes huge revenue, and its a very competitive alternative to over-priced games like WoW. Hopefully this will make other MMO players take note of how serious runescape is, and others how wide the video game audience has grown.

That just shows you how much money that they are making. They are taking the company on a jet to go to a beach party. I would not compare Runescape to places such as Myspace. You can only talk to people when they are online, only see a few lines of text, and it is just not really the same.

Constant Tedder? Last I checked Paul and Andrew started it together with Andrew being the lead of the company. Check the corporate site. :-k

"300 programmers make their futile but glorious last stand against 1000000 angry players in The battle of Misthalin. They fight for honor, glory and new content sacrificing themselves so that their game may live on. This is Madness! This Is JAGEEEX!"

Contant Tedder has been with JaGex since the start almost, he's a Jagex bigshot :P

Intresting find thou, $500M

probably everyone from the content team. The CS dont really matter, because getting a job in CS isnt a big deal at all.

Nice read here.

A reflection is just a distorted reality held by glass and your mind.

After Jagex is sold, that's when RuneScape starts to fall apart. The new owners wouldn't know how to run the game... -.-

Feel free to HYT me ingame!

Same here. I don't want Runescape to be bought out buy some big commercial gaming company like EA, Runescape will lose it's close family feel. EA games are poo anyway. :P

Actually I would quit Runescape and probably many other veterans players would to.

No longer playing Runescape, I caught the WoW bug.
