It's a very interesting topic, in my opinion. No reason to rain on his parade. I think it may be setting a trap, waiting for an animal to step on it, then the trap catching the monster. Your player sets up a trap, a small animal comes along and you finish off the pain the animal is suffering after it steps into the trap.
