UNDERAGE USER ALERT!! (age requirement discussion)

ixfd64

Recommended Posts

As we know, Jagex has added a 13+ age requirement for RuneScape, and have updated its TOS and privacy policy.

This website is targeted at, and intended for an audience of 13 years and older. It may contain features that are not suitable for children under that age. If you are under the age of 13 you must not create an account or provide us with any personal information unless you have the consent of a parent/guardian, and it is permitted by applicable law. Furthermore if you are under the age of 18 please ask your parents/guardian to accept these terms+conditions on your behalf before you use this website.

We do not knowingly permit anyone under the age of thirteen to use any of our websites. Nor do we knowingly collect any personally identifiable information from preteens. Internet safety experts have advised that preteens do not fully appreciate the risk of providing too much personal information online or communicating with strangers they encounter online. While we appreciate that many preteens would want to use our websites, we urge parents to instruct their children not to lie about their age so as to be able to use our websites before they are old enough. Instead, we recommend that parents set up an account and play together with their preteens who are otherwise too young to play RuneScape or our other games. Many parents have reported that playing RuneScape as a family is fun and rewarding. Then when your children are 13 they will be ready for their own account.

If we are notified by a parent that their preteen has lied about their age when registering on our websites, we will cancel the account provided we have confirmation which satisfies us that the reporting person is indeed the parent.

Parents can reach us by emailing [email protected].

So far, the 13+ age requirement is only required by the United States (COPPA). Basically, on sites where personal information is collected, children under 13 must have parents' permission. Many sites opt to disallow all <13 users, as otherwise that would prove to be too much paperwork, especially when proof of parental consent is involved.

As a British company, Jagex is not bound by COPPA, but they have decided to enact the 13+ rule anyway.

So here are my questions for discussion:

1. Has anyone ever been banned for being proven to be underage?

2. Would bad-faith users try to get people banned by attempting to impersonate their victims' parents?

Discuss.

What are the chances of a RuneScaper's parents (unless they are a parent) finding out about the age limit and sending Jagex an e-mail?

I know the chances are maybe 1%, but still.

1. And I doubt anyone has been banned for being underage. If so, probably 4-15 players worldwide.

2. I don't think people are smart enough to think of that idea, but it is a good one to use if you really hate someone... (not saying I'm going to try it...)

And what made you decide to look this stuff up? Were you just really bored? Next time you're bored, try doing some calculus problems. Jk.

1. I don't think so.

2. Why in the world would you do that to anyone? That's just downright cruel :| I highly think that sort of action is totally preposterous.

Well, if that rule wasn't in place then it would've saved me 2 hours. I'm 12 and I had a 2 hour discussion with my parents before I was permitted to play the game. I felt as if I was a terrorist arriving in the US :ohnoes: .

I did a check, and Jagex indeed blocks account creatoin if you recently tried to sign up as under 13.

It's done by cookies, and not by IP, because I was still able to access the account creation options after changing browsers (IE -> FireFox).

I have not heard about this before, and I think it's pretty good. I mean RS is a pretty complicated game, and if you not live in britian or U.S.A you can't speak english so good that it takes to play this game.

It's an interesting rule to enforce really. I can't see any way for them to monitor the ages of all 5 million or so accounts. I think they are just going to rely on people to tell the truth to be honest.

Of course, if someone's parent were to find out that they were playing, and the kid was under 13, if that parent wrote to Jagex, Jaex would have little choice but to ban the account, but it would be an interesting case to prove. Imagine, someone claiming to be Zezima's Mom :P

I think it is there for little more than show really. They have no way of proving one way or another, without asking people for more personal information to check. Publicity Stunt

Isn't it against the rules to have more than one person playing your account? Parent - Child

English is also a native/second language in many other countries in Africa, Hong Kong, Canada, India, which is about 20% of the world population. The other 80% still manage to play the game so it's not an issue.

We all know that any kid out there can just say they are 13 years old when making their account. As Lagatag said, its mainly just for legal reasons.

This rule barely has any affect in runescape. Jagex most likely knows that children under 13 years of age still play, and they will allow it because they are still making quite a bit of money on it. They only reinforce this law to keep the game going.

I'm from venezuela and believe me, i have better grammar than some people in runescape -_-. It is just a shame when "the english speakers" cannot complete a quest because donnot know what means "x" word just because is antique.

I have seen many english speakers do that. But lets not rant on leet speak on this topic please.

If they did not enfore or create the rule. Than they would get in big trouble with us goverment because of the new internet children proction act.

Also it is best to do that so that the members section look more creadible and more fourteen year old will get their pays to pay for members.

What POSSIBLE reason would someone have to make a fake like that?Does he profit from faking a picture like that? Does it help him at all?Jesus Christ, stop being so suspicious. This is Tip.it for God's sake, not RuneHQ. -_-
