how hot does it go?

At least up to 450 degrees farenheit. That's the temperature at which paper bursts into flames. I need to find a thermometer that won't melt to find the exact heat I can get to.

|___| top angled area is to reflect hte sun into the bottom, all of it is covered in shiny foil. Which then cooks it from the sun.

It's not really a death ray though... It takes too long to set something on fire easily. More like a... Ray of extreme hotness? lol.

I miss you all (Well, mostly my friends n stuff)

If you want to talk to me, send me a message, I check the boards daily. :D

I don't know -- were I to make one myself I think instead of calculating what angle and position each mirror needed I would just align them one at a time out in the sun, adjusting each so that it pointed at some place I'd decided would be the focal point, maybe keeping the others covered up or something. I couldn't really be bothered with all the measuring and thinking "why isn't it working? Is this one out by a little? I wonder if it's this one".

Of course, I'd need to keep pointing it at the sun as it moved across the sky, but that wouldn't be too much effort compared to all the horrible measurements I'd have to do otherwise.

I submit that the next thing to be ravaged by the death ray should be...

...Your hand!

Pretty damn spiffy, I need me one of those.

On the topic of Mythbusters:

For those of you saying that Mythbusters' tried it and didn't work, you have to keep in mind that they were testing the veracity of the story of Archimedes [or whoever] and his apparent "Death Ray" and its possibility.

Thus, they used bronze, which was and is less powerful than glass in reflecting light. They did that because bronze was the most reflective material known to mankind at that time, so it wasn't possible for them to have glass mirrors.

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

that is cool, i want to build one of those

btw, what would happen if you built an large round mirrer (half a circle) and shine the suns rays in there, wouldn't it get extremely hot

if someone though of this for an extremely LONG time, maybe we can get energy out of it
