First of all, I would like to state that I'm Homeschooled and have been since grade 4. I still know very much what it is like to be in a school situation, so don't get me wrong. Anyway, I agree with your point that people need to reject the social niches, but most of what you said is coming straight from your side of the picture. You haven't balanced anything at all, and i've known goths and emos... etc... that are very nice people and only dress that way because they feel like it. I wear glasses. I play chess. The only thing that really stinks is Math. Basically, you recieve 50+ problems of the SAME THING. You learn after 15! I think it's just pointless. We had to do Matricies, which we had 8 problems, labeled as A-H. You had to first add A into B, then into c, and so on down the list. Never with its self. Then you had to do B, and add it into A, then C, and so on. once you added all together (56 problems), you had to Subtract them. (56 problems later), then you had to multiply them, which takes FOREVER! That homework took 4-5 hours. It was pointless.

If you honestly believe that MOST/ALL social relationships (refering to dating here) are for popularity or sex, your wrong. Honesly, why do you care about what other people think / do. It's yourself that you should be thinking about, not anyone else. If you give them anymore credit then they give themselves, they succeded, you failed. To be honest, I think you made this post out of the jealousy of your fellow students. Due to the fact you have low to no social life, (and for petes sake, your vice-president of the Chess Club, how the hell do you expect to pick up a girl with that..) What better way to learn about moles than to....make a stuffed animal mole! wow, and we can take up a whole class period presenting our moles, with stories we make up about the life of our mole. Ya, that project was worth 50 points. Our last test was worth 70 points.

I am one of those athletic people you were talking about, and believe it or not, we have to work HARD. 4+ training sessions a week, which generally end up in throwing up, and not being able to walk properly for an hour or two isn't fun. I also have to fit in my school work, (If I don't pass, my trainer will refuse to train me) and work 4-11 4 days a week. I don't generally beat up people smaller than me. My last fight was someone who was picking on younger kids (game of red rover, he was tackling them on rocks and I stuck up for them, and he started on me), and was 3 years older than me. I guess all my training paid off because I put him in hospital with concussion and a fractured eye socket. This was at least a year ago and I havn't been in a fight since. (I don't look for fights, but if one is braught to me then im just not afraid to act.) I also do well in school, im doing maths B and physics next year and want to become a pilot. Don't steriotype.

I love school, but i go to school in England and I'm guessing you go to school in America. My school doesn't really have the kind of social ladder thing, but there are definetly arrogant people who think that they are better than everyone else, usually the rugby team.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Girlfriends are definetly not for increasing your social rep. or just for having sex with. You go out with a girl because you like her. The girl that I am in a relationship with at the moment is not for either of those things (well maybe sex but not just for sex). Most of the things you guys talk about don't exist at my school, at all. The whole "cool" thing hardly exists because everyone respects one another's friends. Sure, there are a few weirdos, maybe 5, although there are good reasons for that. There are also groups with whom people tend to stick to, for instance the cross country kids, the football kids, the band kids, the lazy kids, the volleyball girls. But guess what? The reason is simply that they have things to talk about, and if someone decides to randomly sit down at another table and start chatting, no one would give a second look. It's actually rather nice.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I have to say that the teachers would never do something like making a stuffed mole...most of my classes are quite tough (almost all honors/AP), and the teachers are good. There are only a few teachers who are rather lazy, but the students usually only ever have one of those at a time out of seven periods, so they are able to either learn on their own, or take the time to relax a little bit.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The only thing that you'd find to be "typical" is that most of the football guys do enjoy getting drunk every weekend....almost all of them.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As far as the dating/social ladder goes...w/e? Sure people date, but there's hardly a social ladder that anyone cares about. People date if they are interested in someone else. As a matter of fact, the vast majority of couples in my school have been together over a year, and about 1/4th have been together 2+ years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We also hardly have goths/emos/punks because first, we have a uniform, and second, there simply aren't many of them. I could name two off the top of my head who would obviously fit somewhat into that category, but that's it.

I called myself "goth" and "emo" because that's what a typical stereotyper would call me. I hate this title, and I don't believe in labels, but most consider me that. What you have to do is ignore them. If you just mope around saying, "Oh, my life will never get better, and all I can do is complain how miserable I am because of them," then they've won. What you have to do is ignore them, and if they insult you about it, insult them back. "An eye for an eye" is a good thing to do in this situation.

If you even want a chance with a popular girl, being in the chess club will kill your chances. High school has a popularity ladder as you've mentioned, so there is a girl out there that's willing to date you. She will be harder to find than if you were on the basketball team. And those two reasons you mentioned for why people date in high school.. That may be true for some but not for most. You don't seem like the most social of people so before you decide why people do something, you should be around a lot of people that are dating. Sex and popularity aren't the main reasons for why my closest friends date.

Reading over this post it seems you're one of the nerdy kids who gets picked on and can't get a date. Guess what? THAT'S HIGH SCHOOL! You chose that path now live with it. You can try to change but it's hard (trust me on that). You only look at the negative side of school. What about the time you get to spend with your friends? Hanging out before/after class and during lunch. Passing notes in class and bugging the hell out of teachers.. Making new friends with new classes and surrounding yourself with people you enjoy being around.. Or are you one of the kids who keeps to himself and when presented with a group project asks to work alone? Who sits alone at lunch and actually spends study hall doing homework? Also.. Would you happen to be a freshman? For me school rocks. I'm a sophomore so upperclassmen can't pick on me for that anymore, and that was all they had on me. Maybe change your attitude about school (and make some more friends) and you'll have a better time. So quit b* about how high school works. It's been like it is for a long time and you're not going to change it. Enjoy it while you're there..

Making new friends with new classes and surrounding yourself with people you enjoy being around.. Or are you one of the kids who keeps to himself and when presented with a group project asks to work alone? Who sits alone at lunch and actually spends study hall doing homework? Also.. Would you happen to be a freshman? For me school rocks. I'm a sophomore so upperclassmen can't pick on me for that anymore, and that was all they had on me. Maybe change your attitude about school (and make some more friends) and you'll have a better time. So quit b* about how high school works. It's been like it is for a long time and you're not going to change it. Enjoy it while you're there..

Trust me though. Put yourself out there. Yes, stereotypes suck but they are a part of life. I've been kicked out of college, when I was 17 (remembering American college is English university). I wish I could go back. I've found it almost impossible to get a job due to stereotypes and I had to fight so hard to get my half a years worth of excess education.

I dident even read thrugh all these pages but i did read your main post. you seemed to have forgoten the bigest problem in american schools today- the students! they have terrible attitudes to start with and no respect for anyone. to make matters worse they try to jack other people up who are not in the position to defend themselves.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

the teachers seem more afraid of the students than the students of the teachers as is evident when the room goes to 80 decibles when its study time. would that school uniforms and the iron fist of the teacher would return and the youth could learn more than just the basics. things like honour and dissiplin seem lacking in todays youth to no end. whenever my eardrums are deccimated by the sound of a subwoofer in a car with some gangster wanabe punk, I long for change.... thats my 2 cents.

Sure school (especiall high school) is dumb when you bring in points that involve the students. Kids for the most part rarely realize how hard thigns really are and will over emphesize the little things, such as your tables.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I remember lunch tables at my school... I was in I guess the outcast group. Not exactly. We were accepted by every group there, but liked it by ourselves. Made it a competition to take the cool seats away at one point. Had 20 people at one round table, and it only seated about 7.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I didn't date in high school for exactly that reason. I didn't want anything from the girls, but they were insistant in trying because it's taught by them that they won't be loved otherwise... Meh. Shallow high school.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Never had the problems you have with the clubs though. I hated the place enough that I wouldn't stay there any longer than I had to.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

With your teachers, it's not entirely their fault. It seems like you are an above average student, and what is odd, is that above average is the to 5% of the school basicly. The teacher needs to teach things to the lower than average people, and they can't really do much else. Provide for the upper percent, do badly on benchmarks with the others, bore the upper percent and get better grades on the benchmarks....

 

 

 

I'm going to be a teacher, and I've been helping out one of the recent graduats at my work, and it's amazing how little the kids try. A simple project (reading a paper that has all the information and then answering the multiple choice on the back) Most of them don't finish, and very few of them get over 50%.... The teachers have to keep dumbing things down all the way through high school.
