19 December 2006 - Fake websites

Marco

Recommended Posts

We're seeing a growing number of people in our game and on our forums advertising scam websites which are designed to steal your RuneScape password.

These websites generally offer you something amazing, such as a sneak preview of a forthcoming RuneScape update, thus tempting you into giving away your password in your excitement. Even if the website itself doesn't ask you to enter your RuneScape password, it might install malicious software on your computer that would steal your password the next time you type it.

In particular, we'd like to make it very clear that websites promoting sequels or spinoffs relating to our games are fake. Similarly, websites offering RuneScape benefits or the chance to become a moderator are fake. None of these websites should be trusted.

Think about it for a moment: If we had made something new and fun, we wouldn't hide it on a different website. We'd tell you all about it right here on http://www.runescape.com or

Yeah it is comman sense. Whats funny aswell, they are mostly sites like freewebs. Just take a look. If you see a link on the forum like this, right click the link and see where it links to. If it is suspicious, dont visit it! Take your time and you wont endanger your account.

How do we know Tip.It isn't keylogging us all?

Because its been around since the start of runescape, and there was never any mass character hack :P

Mmm, tip.it's the oldest Runescape fansite (and best). Despite this, I know so many people who have been told that tip.it has spyware by Runescape Community (who refuse to allow you to even mention the name ...*whispers* tip.it...!)

Anyway, enough of this RSC bashing, Tip.it's completly safe. ::'

Please don't make this post overdramatic with the "oh noes Jagex killing fansites". The news itself doesn't have anything to do with fansites.

Jagex is simply stating that sometimes users post fake RS/Jagex websites in their official forums, and to not go to them. When they say fake RS websites, they mean websites that look exactly like the runescape.com website, but is not the real one, and will steal your password.

But the question still remains if somone asks you for some help, and you tell them to go to tip.it for the answer. will jagx ban you if you are reported.

Is this the death of runescape fansights?

No. Refering people to fan sites will not get you banned. Jagex consider them to be a "major part of the community" ::'

If you have read registration form correctly it says do NOT use your Runescape Password as your Tip.It Password.

Many accounts were Hacked when another Fansite got Hacked and gave out all it's passwords.

Be Warned, Don't use your Runescape Passwords for Fan-Sites.

My site, and the site I designed for my clan, says that too. Why's my website censored? There's no reason for it. I pay 100 dollars a year to run it and bought a domain name. And my dynamic signatures are the best (see my sig =p). Only thing is, they aren't really dynamic on here because they have to be uploaded to ImageShack. -.-

Yeah it is comman sense. Whats funny aswell, they are mostly sites like freewebs. Just take a look. If you see a link on the forum like this, right click the link and see where it links to. If it is suspicious, dont visit it! Take your time and you wont endanger your account.

For example... Pressing here will take you to RuneHQ. Go ahead... click it.

In actuality, it takes you to Google.com, but most people wouldn't know that unless they looked at the Status Bar of their browser, if it was even shown. That just shows how dangerous these links can be. I could've easily linked that to a malicious website if I had wanted, but of course I don't scam or take people's accounts...

It just shows the lengths people go to for a few pixels. There's also something else that should be noted about Keyloggers that someone mentioned a long while ago on the Official Runescape Forums.

Keyloggers track EVERYTHING you type. That means that if you were on a shared computer, and you got a keylogger on your computer, should a parent go on and pay bills on a Banking site that requires a log-in, then later finds out about the keylogger, that means the person who keylogged you has that person's bank information, and is now illegally in possession of stolen property. This opens up the way for criminal charges to be brought against the person, even if they were trying to get a Runescape Password, not bank information.

In short, people who install keyloggers without someone's knowledge ARE BREAKING THE LAW.

They posted this because there have been MANY (3+ a day), hacksite advertisers on the official forums.

Its been "Runescape 3" and "Become a pmod!". You wouldn't think that anyone would go to them, but unfortunately they do. You wouldn't believe that amount of threads on the forums "DONT GO TO *insert hacksite here* BECAUSE I DID AND I GOT HACKED".

Well i got send emails a long time ago which stated that i could have free stuff, pmodship (the usual stuff) and I clicked it because i was curious.

And i have to say that the site i was directed to looked as an exact copy from the Runescape site where you need to log on. It even had a pic floating OVER the url bar (top of your browser where you type in the sites and such) so that it hid the fake site ... not sure how that was done but it sure looked EXTREMELY real.

Obviously you can tell by the sourcecode it isn't jagex their site but then again no one bothers checking that so yea.

Was a very well made site which in my opinion 8/10 visitors would fall for.

Like I said, this was like 6 months or even longer ago, not sure why jagex makes a special notice for it now (probably because this form of attempting to get users their pass got common)

No. Refering people to fan sites will not get you banned. Jagex consider them to be a "major part of the community" ::'

It's because many players don't know the difference that you still aren't allowed to mention them though. Repeatedly mentioning URLs in RuneScape on on their forums, would be considered ignoring warnings; and ignoring warnings would result in a ban.

That's not the fault of Tip.it or Jagex. It's because some players don't educate themselves, so for the sake of their safety a simple rule was drafted.

It's also for the sake of consistency too, because many players seem to get easily confused that a simple rule had to be drafted.

Then to be fair the rule had to be applied to all fan sites.

The wider RuneScape community (not just the RuneScape Community fan-site forums) is one of the most diverse of any MMORPG out there which is something to be proud of and not scorned. However, with that diversity a lot of things that might work in more homogeneous communities (groups that don't have a lot of differences between their members) aren't allowed for that reason.

Regardless of players' opinions of different fan-sites, practising safe computing by not using your RuneScape password on any other site, and keeping your security software (anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware, etc.) up-to-date and turned-on at all times, is essential.

And not downloading & installing anything you cannot trust and being wary of links or images anyone sends you is also being a net-wise citizen. Like in real-life we need to be just careful of what we allow onto our computers, as much as we'd be wary of what we allow into our homes.

Each player needs to take control of their safety at their end.
