It's flippin freezing in southern AZ past day or two, and rainy. It was just last week we were like in the 70's and I could wear shorts :(

We got a little bit of snow here in Cedar Rapids (Iowa) yesterday. Only .25 inches by my estimate..

Just wondering.. Would this happen to be the storm we're talking about?

I live in California, and even though it hasn't snowed, it has been very cold, about 20-30 degrees F lows, and 45-55 degrees F highs.

I live in Massachusetts, no snow yet. Actually, there was 2 inches once, but I was away in main and it melted in three hours. Did I mention christmas was 78 Fahrenheit?

Meh, we haven't gotten snow yet. We never get snow this year. :P

It is supposed to be cold this week though. So maybe we'll get some. Only once, have I not gotten a single day off from school :P

I think I nearly froze after spending 4 hours at Harvard Yard yesterday. But then, my penguin-ness kept me fine.

(STILL NO SNOW! Well, it's raining...And it feels colder than 32...But...No...SNOW! Okay, I hate snow. But I want a day off from school on Tuesday...4 day weekend FTW!)

Friday night the temperature dropped from 70 degrees to 20 in less than an hour.

Now, it's 18 degrees with a wind chill of 11. My hall's dining room is closed, so I tried to walk to an off-site location. It got too cold, so I tried to drive. After spending 20 minutes trying to de-freeze my car, I gave up and ordered pizza.

Yes, I am thoroughly affected.

Me thinks we will get lots of snow tomorrow. Good thing we don't have school. :P

Argh.. It's snowing quite a bit here.. ~1/2 inch this evening by my estimate. I just finished shoveling but I plan on doing it again somewhere around midnight or 1 am. Just because I want people to look out their windows and wonder why the hell I'm shoveling in the middle of the night. ::'

We had our real snow fall yesterday (I basically count that as my birthday present, i really wanted snow). Now everything started to melt, but because of that, we now have soooooo much freezing rain, that as soon as i hits the ground, it becomes ice. What does it all mean Basil? I have a snow day today ^o^ hehehe suckers in school.

Heh, no snow days here. Although universities aren't really ever closed... just some profs don't make it in for class :P. The high schools are open too though.

Hehehe.. Sucks to be anyone in school. I have the day off and I'm not really sure why they gave us today off. It's a scheduled day off so I don't have to make it up :P

Ugh.. It's still snowing here. More snow = more shoveling <.<

Just to give an idea of how that arctic front affected the Inland Empire (area in Southern California that's east of LA), here are a few pictures I took with my cell phone camera.

Temperature the University of California - Riverside at 8AM Pacific Standard Time was 27̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF/-3̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðC on Sunday, 15 January 2007:

This is one of larger ice patches. The sprinklers tend to flood here around the base of the tree, so a pool of water normaly sits there. Now it's entirely frozen by ice half an inch thick.

Puddle of water from the sprinklers frozen onto one of the pathways leading to one of the dormitories.

Another patch of ice on the pathways. Looks like someone put plastic there until you step and touch on it.

Tonight we're expecting a low of 31̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF, with the RealFeel̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî temperature of 16 ̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF. For those that read in metric, that's low: -1̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðC, RealFeel̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî: -9̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðC.

;) Good thing I don't live in Lancaster, California. They hit a record low of 3̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF/-16̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðC yesterday. Entire yards were frozen.

Lol Magey, taking pictures of patches of ice :P

I should take a picture of the trees here - every single branch and twig is perfectly enclosed in ice.

I mean whats so horrible about that less ice covering the ground???

What about 6 centimeters high ice layers covering the powerlines?

That is what happened to Quebec (Canada's french province) in 1998. The powerlines literally went DOWN and even fell on the highways.

No power for a whole month in some northen regions. Tree 3 story high falling on the roads, many forests completely destroyed . . . etc

So excuse me but i dont see wheres the matter :-s

That's what we got here in Cedar Rapids. It stopped snowing about an hour ago. And I'm none too happy about having slick roads. I haven't been driving long so anyone who rides with me is definitly in for a ride of their life..

That's Quebec. Somewhere up there, in the north. This is LA, southern USA. Where it doesn't snow often.

I obviously wasn't alive in '78, but there was a huge blizzard in Boston that year. Ask anyone who lived in New England at the time, they should remember...So much snow...

And the snow is finally supposedly going to come! Or at least freezing rain...Which is nowhere as good...

It may seem rather pathetic, but the "horrible" bit would be people who just aren't careful and slipping and injuring themselves due to the ice. It may look visible there, but in other parts, it wasn't so visible and I've slipped quite a few times already these past few days due to it.

Think regionally. I agree heavy snow is worse than ice, but you need to look at the area you're comparing with. Some parts of California do snow (Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lake Tahoe, etc.), but where those pictures were taken, it doesn't, and normally doesn't get that cold. Average temperatures for this time of year do NOT fall below 40̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF normally. So while those pictures aren't something to go call disasterous, it is out of the norm.

http://wwwa.accuweather.com/forecast-no ... 3&metric=0

January

Normal High: 68̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF

Normal Low: 41̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF

Normal Average: 55̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF

The disaster really for California right now due to the cold front that's in relation to the pictures I've posted is that the crops are damaged, including the ones down here in Southern California due to the cold, as well as several water mains breaking, causing floods and sink holes on the streets. As of now, the forcast predicts temperatures to feel like 28̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF even though in reality it'd be 37̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâðF. That may not be freezing to you, but in some parts California, that is too cold for comfort.
