The war in iraq, What do you think we should do?

Nowadays, even if someone's only suspected of being a terrorist (not even charged), their address, name and private love life stories are printed all over the tabloids the following day, as if they still have no right to privacy or silence.

Or they are just thrown into one of the "jails" which are totally against all human rights :P

Ahh... long live American freedom!!! [/sarcasm]

Long live saving US citizens. I'm sure the government takes everything they say into account, and I'm sure they have evidence of terrorism or terroristic threats.

Oh I love it when someone who doesn't live in America and doesn't know about our freedoms critisizes the government.

We can vote. Sounds fun, doesn't it?

Sure does, we can vote too. The thing is that our political scene isn't just divided to liberals and democrats, we got a multiparty system, the biggest amount of mep's in whole western world when compared to the amount of people living in our country, the first country where women had same laws on voting as men and so on.

Btw when did you last time vote?

That's like saying you hate someone without knowing them. Apparently, you've never been here. There are local governments, and they're all different. Maybe some cities/towns have more rights than others.

Oh and the last time I voted? It doesn't matter if I do or not, everyone who comes here and becomes a citizen, or born here has the right to vote. I don't see anyone in England given the right to vote who runs the nation, state, or local governments.

You live in Finland, (s)he lives in England. They don't vote, buddy.

I've seen with my own eyes what happens in this world, not just inside the their boarders. I don't need to go to New york to see how USA is doing their imperialistic doings in Iraq. I don't need to go to Los Angeles to be able to compare it how media reacts when "we" do something and when "they" do something. Second, I never said I hate USA. I'm against their international politics and I don't agree with some of their domestic things (which don't belong to me, btw) but I got even half-american (both USA and Finnish passports) real life friends.

That's amazing. We can too. In fact, we were voting before your nation was even born!

As for your comments about the War on Terror. There is no need to detain people for accusations of terrorism than any other accusation. If you have so much confidence in your intelligence services, you'd allow them the right to a trial before locking them up. On a side note, how can you have a War on Terror? Terrorism is an ideology, not a factual substance. It reminds me somewhat of the Truman Doctrine (aka, the war on Soviet-style communism). Yet, you failed at suppressing that too.

The reason is quite obvious. You can't eliminate an ideology. It's in people's minds and the more you attack it, the more sympathetic people get to the very thing you're trying to quash. So as far as you're concerned, you've actually made things worse, and not better. I have no doubt there are more so-called 'terrorists' now than there were pre-9/11, thanks to this 'war'.

Oh, wow. You get freedom once every four years in a two party system where the lines are so blurred you may as well not turn up. Go representative democracy <3:

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

as for the united states arresting everyone suspected of terrorism, think about what if they ARE really terrorists. the way i see it you would blame the the government for negligence after another 9/11 happens that we could have prevented.

dammed if you do, dammed if you dont. :XD:

Say what you mean and mean what you say because those that matter don't mind, and those that mind don't matter.

We have adverts on TV telling us to report suspicious people as they may be terrorists and we can remain anonymous.

My first thought watching the commercial was how many people rang the hotline and said Hi I'm a terrorist, these are my plans but I'd like to remain anonymous thank you.

:P

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

With that logic everyone should be at least jailed as we OCULD be terrorists, rapists, pedos, massmurderers, communist espionages or Saddam Hussein clones. At least our laws say that you're innocent until proven guilty and I assume the same logic is in every other democratic western country too.

No one LOVES war NO ONE wants to be there but that is why the draft is there. We need people to defend this country, and we need more people who control what is going like this guy here. I am also sick of George Bush being beaten and tromped on like he is the only one responsible for his actions. PRESIDENT BUSH IS NOT A ****** DICTATOR! Congress, his cabinet, and all other parts of the government of America is pushing him this way and that way and he decides whats best for the country. I'm sick of people like Bill Clinton who are scumbags getting treated like they are wonderful people. What would be happening now if John Kerry had been elected? We would be having homosexual marriages right now and be going even farther down the path of imoralness(heh.. new word). Every single day I hear someone ranting about George Bush, well you know what? If everyone hates him how the **** did he get into office TWICE???

Kinda off topic, but I had to post about this... Bill Clinton was a great president. You're probably just calling him a 'scumbag' of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He expanded the EITC, raised taxes on the rich, and lowered them on the poor and small businesses, and tons of other programs which can be found here. Every day you hear someone ranting about Bush? Well they're probably average people, people's whose votes don't actually count. The votes that count are the electoral college, and they can vote however they want. So, it doesn't matter if a president elect wins 100% of the popular vote, if he loses the electoral vote, he isn't the president. This is democracy? And I don't know what would be happening if John Kerry would've been elected but I do know 100% that he wouldn't get a law passed that allows homosexual marriages. You know why? Because that power is given to the states. In the constitution, article 1 section 8 clauses 1-18, spell out the powers of the federal government and any powers not in there are given to states. NO WHERE in there does it allow marriage laws, so each state can choose what it wants. There is one thing I agree with you, though. President Bush isn't completely responsible for the war. Every 60 days, he has to get congressional approval and, apparently, they keep giving it to him. So it's not just Bush's fault, it's also congress' for letting it continue.

as for the united states arresting everyone suspected of terrorism, think about what if they ARE really terrorists. the way i see it you would blame the the government for negligence after another 9/11 happens that we could have prevented.

Yes, but out of all the arrests made, many of the suspected terrorists are sitting in jail. Without a trial. Without evidence. Seems like the country has a bad case of McCarthyism... But I'm sure the government knows what they're doing, it's not like they've rounded up people for no reason and jailed them before. Oh wait... they have to the Japanese. But they gave them an apology and $20,000 about 46 years later, so it's all good. Right? They only lost their homes, their jobs, their businesses, EVERYTHING they owned. I'm sure that made up for it.

Long live saving US citizens. I'm sure the government takes everything they say into account, and I'm sure they have evidence of terrorism or terroristic threats.

Actually, that's not true. Traditional rights (i.e. habeus corpus) have been ruled not to apply in these cases. While torture is technically illegal, there is strong evidence that it is still happening in places like Guantanamo.

I recommend the film "Guantanamo" for an accessible account of what it's like. It may seem overdone and dramatic, but the night after I watched the film, I attended a lecture by the guy who was the Muslim chaplain (he was an American citizen with many army servers in the family) at Guantanamo and then later suspected of being a terrorist himself and imprisoned (and eventually released - he was never officially charged with anything). Anyway, he had firsthand knowledge of what it was like there, and he said that the film Guantanamo actually underplayed what it was really like.

Oh I love it when someone who doesn't live in America and doesn't know about our freedoms critisizes the government.

Umm. I don't live in Iraq, but I criticized Saddam Hussein's government, and I'd guess you probably did, too. No offense, but that's a pretty silly argument.

P.S. I am American, though, and I know about our "freedoms" (some of which are pretty sweet, and some of which are total constructed perceived freedoms that don't actually exist, or only exist for the privileged), and I'm still criticizing our government.

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

Oh my, I haven't been by here in awhile, this thread still stumbling along huh? I truly love all the passionate haters who have never been to USA, never been to the streets of Iraq, never been in armed conflict, never been anywhere outside their own little world, and spend copious amounts of time snorting up all the over-dramatized lies the pro-terroristic liberal media loves to pander to those weak minded enough to believe it. Never ceases to amaze me how the least informed have the loudest opinions.

Active Military now for 21 years, been in every armed conflict the USA has been involved in during these 21 years (9 years to go until I retire). I have been around the world (literally) and tromped the streets of most every civilized and uncivilized country. Served alongside; Australians, British, Saudi's, Iraq Security Forces, Germans, Spanish, Turkish, Romanian military forces as well as others.

Been to Australia twice, Romania, Spain over 20 times, England, Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, Turkey, Italy, Sicily, Germany, Scotland, Oman, Portugal, Cyprus, South America, Mexico, Egypt, Norway, and to many others to list.

Irregardless of how we got in Iraq, we can not just up and leave, or the militants will take over again, and murder thousands. As well as permanently destabilize the region, and leave our friends and allies without highly needed financial and military support. Maybe you are okay with that, but I am not. You haven̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t hugged the little children who run up and thank you for rebuilding their school, fed the hungry, provided medical care for the needy, cleared IEDs and mines from a schoolyard play area so the kids can play without worrying about losing a few limbs......meh, you idiots get my blood boiling.

So sit back comfortably behind your computer, and play indignant world citizen, while we walk the streets and play world police....a role we do not want, but SOMEONE has to give a $#@#. Every time I return home to my loving family, it reminds me how good we have it. My kids can play without the worry of the car parked next to the daycare exploding. To bad the world finds great joy as USUAL in dissecting each and every thing we as Americans do, while sympathizing with religious zealots who will blow up their own children to "fight the oppressors"

If we were oppressors, we would have just leveled the city, and set up gas pumps, not continue to spend 800+ billion in rebuilding their infrastructure, and fighting for their right to live peacefully. Not to have acid thrown in the faces of their daughters by religious police because they had their face exposed....or beaten because they "allowed" themselves to be assaulted by a non family male.....you don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t know how good you have it, or how bad they do, until you break the vacuum off your wagon and get out of your computer chair, and go see it for yourself. So shut it.

I got back from Iraq last month, when I left my little baby son could barely sit up, now he is running around the house and talking....missed all those moments voluntarily, because I joined and proudly serve my country. We don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t have a draft currently; we serve because we want to. Also if you retreat, or give in to the pressure of media hype, the terrorists win, and all you have done is show them that the world doesn't have the resolve to stand up to them. Look the other way if it makes you sleep better at night, we can't. But feel free to continue to bad mouth what we try to do to make the world safer....you have that right. Well, in America you do at least.

So you'd be perfectly willing to allow yourself or a family member to be subjected to the same treatment if the government randomly decided that you/they could potentially be a terrorist eventhough there is no evidence to suggest it? I doubt it.
