Obama launches presidential bid

Democratic Senator Barack Obama has launched his presidential campaign with a speech in which he pledged to "build a more hopeful America".

He began his official campaign with a call for the Iraq war to end, saying US troops must withdraw by spring 2008.

Mr Obama is considered by many to be the first African-American candidate with a realistic chance of winning.

He, along with Senator Hillary Clinton, is leading the race for the Democratic Party's nomination for the 2008 vote.

A large crowd of supporters had braved the sub-zero temperatures in Springfield, Illinois to watch Mr Obama make his announcement.

He spoke to the crowd of his working life in the state over the last 20 years, first as a community worker, then as a civil rights lawyer and finally as a US senator.

He said it was the lessons learnt watching the daily struggles many faced that had ignited in him a desire for change:

"That is why, in the shadow of the Old State Capitol, where Lincoln once called on a divided house to stand together, where common hopes and common dreams still live, I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for president of the United States," Mr Obama said.

Well, rather him than Hillary I suppose...

I'd vote him. :)

Me doing staff.

Yea, I'd vote for him too. But I don't think they let Iraqis vote :P

I read his book Dreams from my Father, and I must say he has lived one hell of a life. Don't know if I would vote for him though.

You should read The Audacity of Hope. I'm personally not a big Obama fan but I do think a lot of the book is really fantastic.

I'd take Obama over Hillary any day...

So America has the choice of the first Black President or first Woman... The southerners must be going crazy lol

You forgot the other side. The Republican ticket is a choice between a pro-chioce candidate, a divorced anti-gun owning pro-illegal immigration candidate, and a Mormon.

2008 really isn't the year for Southern evangelicals.

Wow, that properly thought out and structured wordplay is certainly not a flame at all...

Let's keep this one on topic, m'kay?

I watched that speech, and as usual, loved what he had to say. Whether or not he's capable of doing everything he says, who knows. But he's the only one in the runnings whose political philosophy I agree with. I absolutely hate Hilary. I'd love to have a woman president, but she always polarizes with whatever helps her own case look best at whatever time instead of doing what's best. She seems to encompass low blow politics and all of that aggressiveness that I hate so much. Obama's going the opposite direction and is above all of that. I think he'd take us in the right direction we so desperately need. Unfortunately though, I just don't see him getting close to winning.

Obama's fantastic. But before I'd vote for him I'd have to see what the Republicans and maybe the third parties have to offer.

My thoughts exactly.

Who are Hillary's and Obama's running mates? Have they decided yet? It would be pretty cool to see Bill Clinton be the VP to Hillary. What would that be called? First Man?

Ok, I don't know.

I really don't think America is ready for an women president. Excluding the fact that it is Hillary..I would remove myself from this country, so I am praying  ...really I am that we won't have her; it would be a MESS. (I would rather move to sudan -.- ..you get it if you know what I belive in)

I would 100% vote for Barack. But I think, that I will vote republican :-$

I'm worried that in the terrible pattern of Howard Dean, his campaign would continue to gain steam for a while on the "progressive" bill, but then people would realize they don't actually know what he stands for, and look toward someone else (perhaps a dark horse candidate, like Chris Dodd).

This would be a shame, because I quite like Obama. His platforms on education and prison reform really appeal to me, and are pleasantly surprisingly progressive for a presidential candidate. Also, he is as charismatic and (hopefully - remains to be seen) as intelligent as Bill Clinton - traits that have been sorely missed, IMO, in the years of George W. Bush (though Bush does have other redeeming qualities.)

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

I'll get to vote this next election. :D

I'm either voting for him or good ole Nader.

I would vote for him to tick off racists.

I snooped around a racist forum for threads on Obama, and look what I found:

White Pride groups are nut cases. Imagine the likelyhood of an assasination fueled solely on the colour of Obama's skin. :uhh: I'll lose a lot of faith in humanity if that day ever comes, which I certainly hope it does not.
