February 23, 200719 yr Well, as you may or may not be aware, The Monty Python film, Life of Brian is being shown in a Church in Newcastle (or at least in Tyneside/Teeside, I forget) as part of a project by the local film committee to get films into more diverse places. The Bishop of the church it was being shown in says he is completely fine with the film, and loves it. He says he understands where some other religious people get offended by it, but largely theyre just making a big fuss over nothing. I completely agree with him, there is little to no offensive material in the film, it is good natured, and very very well made and scripted. Just wanted your thoughts on the issue? Think the Church are right to hold the film in disdain? Or do you think its great a priest loves the film?

February 23, 200719 yr Yep, as a christian I can find nothing wrong with the film, in fact i find it hilarious, partly because its not actually got Jesus in it - just a guy who got confused with him. Had they actually had Jesus on the cross singing "always look on the bright side of life" then yes we have an issue, but it isnt, hundreds were crucified other than Jesus so no problem for me.

February 23, 200719 yr Why does he refuse to let you see it? Also, it's a very funny film. I'm glad we can get back to people who are not offended by comedy. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

There are Muslims that can take jokes about their religion, and there are Christians who can do the same, as well as those on both sides that absolutly won't stand for it, if they had the power, I'm sure there would be Christians that would take it that far or even farther than that. Not flaming or trying to start a fight, just pointing out the obvious truth. Glad to see people can have a laugh at themselfs, its getting a lot rarer now a days O:)

February 24, 200719 yr I love it. Shows that there are clergymen who can take a bite. However, it also shows how far away the members of Monty Python have gotten from their original goal. Their humour used to be shocking, gritty and controversial - and they loved it. Nowadays, they're part of popular culture, canonised. Some of them must shudder at this kind of news and feel very very old :)

What is supposed to be the real Jesus is in the movie, and made fun of a bit, right in the beginning, preaching to the masses. I personally haven't seen it, and my dad refuses to let me see it (I respect my parents, even though I can easily go rent it). I have however seen Quest for the Holy Grail at a church. We were all laughing. See, that's what I just can't stand, paternalism like that. He think it's something which might change your views negatively, so he says you can't go see it. How can you ever respect such a wish? He says you're completely unable to make your own decisions about what is good and bad. A horrible opinion to have IMO. My parents never told me what to think or feel, and I'm happy about that, it let me grow in my own way, into something I can understand and respect, not something they understand and respect.
