seriously its the rants forum
Eh, it may be a forum to vent, but you've got to realize the difference between venting and just spewing propaganda and/or nonsense. Besides, if everyone agreed with everyone else, Rants wouldn't exist.

All Info On Summer's End Not Released !
Oh wow. Here I thought that the KB was a giant spoiler; good to see Jagex letting our long-dormant exploration habits finally get some sunlight. :D

iPods and Linux
It's far better to get their clear stance on the matter than run the risk of having your entire service disconnected. ISPs can get really cheesed off if they find out you're doing something not agreed upon in the service contract. To begin frankly, I've only touched MS Access briefly, and while there are similarities, they're not really the same. Not knowing any of the programming languages I rattled off of doesn't mean much unless you wish to learn them (even then, you're learning them -- no one expects you to be a guru overnight). When you set up a LAMP server in Linux, it's pretty straight-forward -- there's even an option for it on the install (server only). If you can't find that, or you use a desktop version, there are some tutorials out there that can aid you a bit more. If you want to borrow the books, that's fine, but I'd wait for a little while until you're well-versed in the semantics of the languages before you go out to buy a programming book. There's nothing worse than buying a book with oodles of information, and you have nowhere near the capacity to understand it. (This happened to me when I was younger; I acquired a PHP booklet, and because I didn't understand any of the syntax/semantics, I shelved it, not knowing I had it until I moved five years later.) By the by, I wouldn't have recommended that you set up your server up to be 100% visible to the world, anyway. If you go through with your plan to use it as a NAS, then someone has the potential to access it and delete your critical data.

Lock this
IMHO, anyone that camps at a place like Bandits is pathetic. If you're going to level, go level and get some Slayer while you're at it (hell, that's the entire point of the skill right there -- to get you to move around to different monsters and training spots). My advice to you is to find a new spot to camp, or learn to deal with it. You're not supposed to be able to AFK anything anyway.

G.E. manipulation by Jagex?
IMO, merchants > jagex At least with Jagex, you figure they'll have some restraint. Jagex only intervenes when necessary and restricts themselves to not wounding the economy; a merchant will bleed the economy dry if he has the means because he was dumped a week prior.

Large amount of multiple internet browser windows opening.
There's a lot we could infer from not knowing too much more. What site was she looking at when this happened? What kind of software (read: anything that rhymes with "psunorrent") is on her computer? Does she use AOL, MSN Messenger, does she browse Myspace/Facebook?
-
Microsoft Word
Nope. Just remember to save to each individual folder at some point in time. (Or, if you're okay with VBScript, you could code a batch file to move the saved file to the flash drive automatically...)

G.E. manipulation by Jagex?
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Price manipulation: right or wrong?
"Rights"? What rights? Oh, and about it not being against any rules, it's been said time and again that Jagex doesn't condone any sort of price manipulation. This being from the Grand Exchange entry on the KB: One could infer that price manipulation is frowned upon very much so. Keep in mind that not everyone really has the patience to wait for prices to fall back to a reasonable level. I don't play this game day-in and day-out, and if I want monkfish, I want to pay a reasonable price for 'em. That's all it is.

Loosing connection alot in RS
The hell do you mean "it's not your Internet"? If you're suffering from discontinuity of your internet, that's one of the prime suspects. At any rate, I left my crystal ball two towns over, so you'll just have to tell me what you're using to connect. This includes system specs.

Corpereal beast solo with cannon + spirit shield? + message
Soloing it is simply out of the question. You can't hit it often enough to keep it from healing itself. Like someone said earlier, if you eat or pot up, your cannon will STOP.

Is prayer worth it?
In a word: yes. If only for the extended boost at boss monsters or during Slayer tasks.

15 September 2008 - Summer's End
Regardless of the strength bonuses of the shields, they definitely look worth it. Reducing damage by 25% is a major plus in my book. If the spirit beast can hit ~66, then 66-(.25(66)) = 50 (rounding up). The harder the boss monster, the better the shield becomes: TzTokJad has been noted to hit between 95 and 99. 95-(.25(95)) = 71; 99-(.25(99)) = 75. It'll be a good shield for tanking. Probably KQ, too. Or any other non-dragon boss monster you can think of. Takes the high sting right out of 'em.

The G/E babies people
What an oxymoron. Sorry, had to get that out of my system, but that's the way I feel about it. The rubdown with the GE is simple. I like it because I don't have to spend so much time looking for ingredients scattered all about the place. Now, don't get me wrong, I was much like you about 3 years ago; back when I had oodles of free time. Nowadays, if I want to play, I'd like to get things lined up as quickly as possible before I go in and use an hour and a half of time to play. There are some things I enjoy about this game. Burning 30 minutes to find something when it only takes five isn't one of them. Not anymore. I'm almost certain that when you've got a limited schedule, but want to enjoy games, you'll grow to appreciate the GE more and more.

why do people do it?
I hate doing it like this, but your question is too open-ended. Your answer is in the following question: Why not pilejump someone else?

A gaming computer that laughs at Crysis!
You made me laugh out loud. In a crowded study hall. -.- Anyway, I kinda agree -- this rig is far from the best. I'm not nearly awake enough to begin replacing parts, but when I saw it earlier, I figured I could build a better rig for a little less.

iPods and Linux
What you mean is "Boot from USB". I'm not too sure if the iPod can do that (never owned one before). But, there are ways that you can get a distro on a USB, you just have to look for the instructions. Alas, I have a 1GB flash disc set away for that purpose, guess I haven't had the time to put it all together... If your iPod can be booted from the USB drive, then you've got to do a few more extra steps to get it to boot like a disc. I'd just advise burning the CD; you can find that tutorial for Windows right here. Hosting a web page out to the world really depends on your ISP. Many of them get really mad at you for setting up a web server on just a home user package, and depending on who's running what, that may be grounds for termination of your contract. Best bet is to call them and ask a LOT of questions before going any further. Barring any tensions between you and them, however, I see no problem in you using it as a server -- you just have to set the server up as a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl) server. [Note] I don't mind showing you the code that I've written, under the sole condition that you don't use it anywhere else. These applications are at the 2000 level in my college (Sophomore level); I've seen actual games come out of the 4000 level (and I even played one). Won't be there for a few years, though. :( More visual things with Java? Not really sure what you mean. "More visual" can mean anything from JOptionPane user interaction to JOGL 3D polygons. But, for your solution, there's a simple way to do this. Assume that ALL variables are initialized and all necessary classes are imported. JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Number of games bowled " + gamesBowled + "\n" + "Average " + average + "\nNeeded for a better series " + betterSeriesAlgorithm); You'd have to fill in the blanks, but the way to get visual output on screen is through JOptionPane. Import it through javax.swing.JOptionPane. There are some tutorials for Java out there, but I haven't had the time to go through them to see if they're worth the electricity to look at 'em. Perhaps when I'm finished with my next great project (Fibonacci & Ackerman), I'll be able to take a glance at it and send it your way.

Trojan Help
Speaking practically, you've done everything you can do. All you have to do now is to remember to scan BEFORE executing. ;)

iPods and Linux
Programs on the iPod? Sure, why not? You just have to know where to look. Java? Ooh, I don't think so. It has to be ported to that specific architecture first (and no, it hasn't been done yet -- probably won't be until Java 7 has had some time to mature). I'm sure you can install Linux on there, in fact, that link I provided earlier provides further information about installing *nix on the iPod. As for the Linux installation/tinkering, let's get down to work. To begin with, to pull files off of your old machine, you'll need an intermediate storage device (or a CD burner). If you absolutely need it, then store it on the disc or CD. Next, download a Linux distribution that you think suits you best. Most people seem to prefer Ubuntu, as do I, but there are other types out there. I'd say that Ubuntu Linux is as good a place as any to begin learning about Linux. I'm certain that you can use a Linux machine as a NAS, you just have to have the permissions set on it right. It'd also involve a copy of Ubuntu Server; server because of performance. I'm certain you can flip through the forums or Google and find tutorials about that, as well as partitioning. :P Feel free to PM me, if I find a free moment between now and finishing up my Java projects for college.

A silly noob asks silly computer questions.
There's a lot of answers already on this thread, but I think I can contribute a little more to this discussion, too. 1) Games are fickle in the sense that they will demand 98% of the resources. The best way to go back to Desktop would be with the CTRL+ALT+DEL command. 2) It's two cores, but not two processors. It's like Clare said, your machine can just do more things at once. It's easier to think about it like a 2.0GHz x 2 processor; it's not 4GHz, but it's not the same as exactly 2GHz, either. 3) The difference was already explained -- the 256MB dedicated memory is simply faster for your graphics card to access than system memory. It can take up to 1151MB of extra memory if the application demands it, but this means typically slower performance. 4) For you, I don't think it's going to happen. The 8200M is a mobile graphics card, meaning that it suffers limitations right off the bat. [i'm surprised no one noticed this.] It's never a good idea to play games on a laptop, notwithstanding the limits of upgrading, but because of the sheer heat alone that can be generated from the laptop. Trust me, I know this -- I'm telling this to you on a machine with an nVidia 7000M, and it peaks at 71C (w/o cooling pad) when playing RSHD. Crysis is a demanding game, and if you can't keep your rig cool while playing it, it's going to suffer some major performance degradation. 5) Short answer - No with an unless, long answer - yes, with a warning. You can't play a game on a thumb drive if it requires either a LOT of space, but you CAN run programs that are less demanding on the drive. The reason being that thumb drives have only a limited number of rewrite sequences before they're permanently fried. So in other words, I wouldn't go installing some game like C&C3 on a thumb drive. Your hard disk is far more capable of handling it than some flimsy thumb drive. 6) I can't field this one - I haven't used AV since '05. Someone else should've answered this one. 7) No, probably not. 8) The most useful thing that a computer can have is space. This means that you don't truly need things like registry cleaners or third-party defragmenters (although those have far better results than Windows does). In short, keep your machine free from programs that serve no purpose beyond a trial, and programs that don't serve a true purpose. However, I'd definitely look into an Incinerator program for Windows, especially if you have files you don't necessarily want to come back.

Granite isn't meant for easy money
Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!! I'd figure somebody your level would know better! So what would it matter if I was level 99 in whatever as opposed to whatever levels I'm at now? If there's only X trees, rocks, or fishing spots, there's only X trees, rocks, or fishing spots. Besides, why are you trying to make a response based on my levels anyway? It's not hard to see that when it comes to availability of resources, levels don't really play a role. It isn't like a level 99 miner or woodcutter gets access to some secret cache of rocks or trees. If there's only X resources, there's only X resources. Skills mean what in that, now? You missed the point -- through a junk trade, he was able to get the resources needed to buy a Saradomin Sword. To be honest, there's a lot of things that will never sell on their own. That's how junk trades got started.

15 September 2008 - Summer's End
Hm. Forgot about that. Perhaps the point of this beast was that it couldn't be soloed. Perhaps these items are meant to be awarded to groups instead of the greedy few. Ever think of that, Mr. Condescending Player?

15 September 2008 - Summer's End
Before anyone gets bold and brazen over this thing: [Taken from Zybez.net] The 51 is a lie. The best bet is to go in teams as small as 25, with plenty of 99 Summoners and the like.

Impressiveness of the Kill
Me? O_o No lol, the author of the thread. I mean getting rewarded for killing someone while wearing bad armor? Doesnt make sense. 'Fraid I'm going to agree on that. More or less, impressiveness will mean use of potions, prayers, special attacks, armor, weapons, spells, familiars, etc. Oh, and how many more times you hit your opponent might be a factor too. [Of course, you're going to hear the sound of "DDS is overpowered!" again from the community...]
