  1. To answer your questions: 1) 97% of the applications that are installable on Linux can be found in repositories. Since you're using Ubuntu, you can go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager, then perform a search to find what you're looking for. The other 3% - including Wine - have to be placed into your repository, but luckily, they have instructions on how to do that. 2) Ubuntu Studio is geared towards the audio/video person, as it not only includes software to edit both music and movies, but it also comes with a real-time kernel, which, for whatever reason, really helps music and movie editing out. 3) OpenSUSE is probably nicer visually. A note on Ubuntu x64: What are you going to be doing that requires the 64-bit version of the OS? Personally I'm waiting until Java's plugin hits the x64 scene before I hop, but other than that, I dunno why you'd want to use it...
  2. I'll be frank - there is no such thing as the "best" Linux distribution. Ubuntu Linux happens to be the most popular, and who knows - it might fit your needs. My advice is to tinker with Ubuntu and download the live CD -- this way you don't have to install it to see how it runs on your machine. Linux doesn't support everything in a computer right off the bat, so you've got to be prepared to do a little hunting for the answer (and with the Ubuntu community, you don't have to hunt for very long).
  3. 1) ...What update? What the heck are you talking about here? 2) Take a look in about:plugins on Firefox, if you're using that. It should tell you that you have Shockwave/Flash plugin.
  4. what is the trade limit for a lvl 3 5k?? and items i want on him is 1.1m and theres no way for that?? Probably 5k with no quests accomplished. No, there is *no* way to get 1.1M on that account. Besides, isn't it against the rules anyway?
  5. Copied KDE? The hell you say. Since Vista came before KDE4, it looks like they copied from Vista, from my perspective. (Note that I first started to use KDE when I was into Linux; abandoned it because it looked too much like Windows.) Also, there are a lot of things that are protected by the GPL in Linux, so you'll probably never see them in a Windows box (namely something a-la Compiz Fusion). Why reinvent a wheel? Hypocrisy. Trust me, if they copied anything, they'd really be seen as hypocrites to the computer field; the one company that litigates so damn hard for their own patents can't be seen copying stuff from competitors.
  6. Honest answer? If you're not careful, then yes, you can possibly kill your PC... I recommend (only if you're too uneasy about handling it yourself) that you take the PC and RAM to a computer technician's shop, and they can probably have you all handled within about 15 minutes flat. That is, if they don't give you the runaround, which is why I'd get up some serious guts and stability of mind instead, if I were you... :| ~D. V. "Be careful, but don't get had..." Devnull I'm going to agree here -- while installing RAM isn't so hard, it can mean the end of a machine if you do it incorrectly. Take it to a smaller computer store, where they're less likely to give you a higher charge on parts and handling.
  7. Last resort? You mean to tell me holding the power button, then rebooting, and performing a disk check is a last resort? ...Just walk away urbest...just walk away... #-o Isn't hard restart another way of saying to wipe out the Hard Drive and start all over again? It sounds like it is. Well, if not, i have tried it alot of times, this problem is like a year old, but my mom just recently told me. No no no no no no no no no. What urbestfriend is trying to tell you is that you should consider actually shutting off the computer instead of hibernation. To hibernate your machine is to save your current session on disk -- meaning saving [the state of] all running programs, applications, and the entire OS, regardless of what it's doing. Okay for laptop users that are going to move their laptop from their office or classroom to the presentation room or library; REALLY REALLY NOT A GOOD IDEA FOR DESKTOPS OF ANY KIND. The reason being desktop users forget that they're "hibernating" their machine, and not "shutting it off", so they run into huge issues with memory, slower disks, slower machine, so forth and so on... Not to mention, Windows uses a "paging" file to do all of this. There are limits to how big that file can be, and since there's a lot of cruft on that file, that would explain the sluggishness. What you can do to remedy this is to shut the doggone thing off for an hour. Then go back into the OS and run the disk defragmenter program. Then, run it again. Then, after you're done with that, tell your mother to never, ever hibernate her machine again. Period.
  8. I don't know what type of graphics card it is just by looking at that information, but a lot can be solved if you shut the machine down all the way, as opposed to hibernating it.
  9. Personally, I really love AMD's lineup, but it really depends on what you plan on doing. The new AMD Phenoms really aren't all that great, and Intel's processors bruteforce a lot of raw processing power. At the moment, I'd recommend an Intel processor, but AMD is sure to come out with something truly wonderful sometime next year.
  10. The original owner of the car still owns the car. that has nothing to do with the thieves or the gas. The thieves are responsible for the theft of the car. The person who pumped the gas is responsible for the gas bill. It's not the stations problem where the gas went. If you pump it you pay. end Anyway, this analogy doesn't work as your talking about tangible goods. The person who borrowed the car could still be held responsible for the theft, but this is a bad example. I can give you a better one. Bob loans Mary the use of his textbook, with Mary promising to keep it in the same condition. Mary, either through accident or intention, damages or destroys the book. Ultimately, Bob must replace the book, but may take Mary to court to cover the cost of the book. [Please don't think of it as silly - some of my college texts run over $120, and I'd want money if someone destroyed my book!] Oh, by the by, gas is tangible, too. Just like electricity, in your case. Except you get a lot less violent jolt through every cell of your body, and more gas fumes. -.-
  11. Wealth in this game gets you much, much farther than just having fun in this game, so I can see why players believe that money = happiness. However, I disagree with the principle -- as long as I'm enjoying playing the game, who cares if I don't have a Godsword at level 127? It boils down to the kind of person you ask. Those that are in it to get a lot of enjoyment in a little time believe that money is happiness; those that prefer to enjoy playing the game rather than grinding through it would believe otherwise.
  12. I'm going to (for the moment) rule a virus infection out, if you were able to access these sites fine a few days before, and you haven't downloaded anything within that time frame, or went to dodgy sites. This means that it goes outside of the scope of your computer, and there may be little we could do to help. My guess is that it's somehow related to the college's firewall. It could have limited your access to certain sites, or you could have a bandwidth cap that prohibits you from going to any further websites. It could even be a random bad time to connect. Check with your IT department's Internet Policy. They might have a few clauses and things in there you need to know about accessing the network.
  13. What is the difference, if you don't mind me asking? From WikiAnswers (seems credible enough):
  14. Frankly, I hated the system where we updated practically once a week. I could never get anything accomplished with it. Now, with two or three a month, it sounds a lot more manageable. I guess I feel like they're taking their time with better updates.
  15. I'm not much on building a machine, but let's see how well I do with this project. Been meaning to actually look into getting a machine, but I didn't want to spend too much on it. AMD Athlon X2 AMD Athlon X2 4850e 2.5GHz -- 45W BIOSTAR NF520-A2 AMD Motherboard OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) RAM Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400GB HDD PNY VCG86512GXWB-OC GeForce 8600 GT GPU Lite-On Black DVD/CD burner w/Lightscribe ATOP Red ATX Mid-Tower Case Logisys 480W ATX 12V PSU Totals: Processor: $65 Motherboard: $50 RAM: $65 - $25 Rebate = $45 HDD: $50 GPU: $80 - $40 Rebate = $40 Optical: $26 Tower Case: $26 - $10 Rebate = $ $16 PSU: $17 Subtotal: $379 w/o S&H After Rebates: $304 w/o S&H Holy crap, I think I did alright. I might be able to throw in a decent monitor with this rig and still fall under $400!
  16. I have three F2P pures, X Makoto X being only one of them. And recently, I was able to kill someone in full Rune in Lumbridge Swamp. TL;DR: If you're going to really PK, and I mean really PK, get the hell away from banks.
  17. The only thing you can update is your RAM, and even then, you face limitations based on your manufacturer. (For instance, the laptop I'm using right now can only support 3GB of RAM, regardless of the OS.) If you want a machine to run RSHD in its full glory and other things, then you're looking strictly at a desktop. I would never advise a laptop for this due to its smaller form factor, the immense amount of heat it would radiate, and the higher probability of something screwing up over the heat issue. A machine that can blaze through RSHD wouldn't run you much higher than $900, if you do your homework and do it well enough.
  18. What? Shameful? I don't think so -- if they're on a PvP world, they're fair game, no matter what they're doing. Being attacked by someone if you're skilling there isn't really cowardice, since the person NOT doing PvP is well aware of the dangers. Anyway, it's their fault that they so happened to be on a PvP server. All excuses go to the incinerator after that.
  19. "Fair"? I don't call fighting someone with an AGS fair, since I sure don't have one. I don't consider it fair for them to not use their strongest weapon, either.
  20. Honor? What honor? If you want rules, go duel someone. If you want good drops, prepare to fight without rules. Anything goes, so you'd better come ready for any and every situation.
  21. Correction: If the majority of feedback, based on conjecture, rumor, and theory, and NOT on the actual first-hand experience of the player ranting is negative, then no, Jagex did nothing wrong. The update isn't going to be "understood" in a matter of an hour; you have to go out there to see what really happens with some wild stuff. Oh, and I doubt that the economy will be hurt by a little flux in supply/demand; more or less, it'd make it stronger. I mean, have you LOOKED at shark prices lately?
  22. Let's see some specs. You'll get some advice shortly thereafter. [What, does no one read that sticky?]
  23. in the 3-4 years ive been playing, ive barrowed, GWD, dragon (normal and metal) hunted, i even tried pking way back, castle wars was fun for awhile, duel arena is just bleh, same with bounty hunter and clan wars, ive quested and tried my hand at every skill..... what more is there to do? I'm quite certain that you can use your imagination to pull some tricks up out of your sleeve, if you really want to keep yourself entertained in RuneScape. That's what the Role-playing servers exist for, I guess -- man, I miss the days when my imagination could really take the gameplay to a whole new level... Anyway, as for the "quit" statement, don't you realize that this is a game and not a job/career? Quitting this game means you'll only pick up another in a matter of seconds, so that advice is actually useless. Like you even said, wild_goat, you can get addicted to other games...
  24. Yes, if and only if you cannot find enjoyment anymore in this *massive* game. Seriously, there's tons of content out there; try your hand at Mort'ton or even the new PvP worlds. [i never used to be a big fan of PvP, but this update made it a lot more fun to participate in it.]
  25. Items leaving the game through PvP is a good thing. This means that Smithing and Mining will re-gain some appreciation, and make it worthwhile to actually train.
